The short story 'Sam’ is part of an original collection of short stories written as part of my MA creative thesis, Circo, which seeks to give voice to the queer community of Santurce, Puerto Rico through the integration of characters and storylines based on real queer Puerto Rican individuals and the personal experience I acquired being actively involved in Santurce’s LQBTQ community. These individuals’ queerness has led them to suffer misrepresentation and exclusion, as well as a social oppression that often denies them the freedom and opportunity to live genuinely validating lives. They inhabit what Homi K. Bhabha calls the ‘betwixt and between', that ‘in between’ space that allows individuals to elaborate strategies of selfhood that initiate new signs of identity (Mangham,p.4). Though inhabiting these spaces can allow for certain types of self-development, the largely traditional, heterosexual and conservative nature of Puerto Rico’s majority culture constantly pressures them to abide by normative gender stereotypes. Trans people thus feel the pull of the desire for ‘normalcy’ and the desire to find their ‘true’ self, which can keep them trapped in a stagnant world of ‘in-betweenness.’ Rather than play the victim, though, they embrace their limbo existence and make it into a productive space of expression and personal development.

Development is a focal point of human existence from the moment of birth. A magnitude of options is offered in which to choose a path of growth and expansion as we progress. The following is a review of one such choice, the integral theory; included are both an explanation of theory and ideology of human development. This understanding is applied to my personal experience as I participated in P.L. Lattuada’s experiential process of organismic constellation. Through a gradual evolution of meditative processes Lattuada’s organismic constellation method offers a chance to explore one’s egoic translations. The second portion of this paper explores my personal process, revealing some of my personal egoic translations of traumas, fixations, complexes, and shadows. This chapter examines how LOHAS salvages its “New Age” focus on self-development or actualization. It examines the Mind Cure, New Thought, and New Age movements in terms of their relationship to capitalism to show how LOHAS extends and expands these movements through the LOHAS category of Personal Development (also referred to as the Mind/Body/Spirit market). In Personal Development goods and services, physical and spiritual self-healing reflects a moral pragmatism by linking self-healing work with that of healing the world. Threaded through the LOHAS discourse is a popular American theme—the power of positive thinking—and this healing modality is put to use in so-called the quantum spiritualities, the latest incarnation of the American therapeutic tradition. The end of the chapter shows how the LOHAS texts use examples of healed selves as testimonials to show that it is indeed possible for individuals to transform themselves to social warriors.

The necessity of using a variational approach when designing an individual trajectory of professional growth for college teachers is substantiated, which involves taking into account the level and characteristics of their professional and personal development. The article presents the results of an empirical study, the purpose of which was to identify the types of individual trajectories of professional growth of college teachers. The study involved 214 teachers with a teaching experience of 3 to 38 years. The study was carried out using two specially selected reliable and valid methods: a diagnostic technique for the level of partial readiness for professional and pedagogical self-development (Fetiskin N.P., Kozlov V.V., Manuylov G.M.) and a methodology for studying professional motivation developed by K. Zamfir and modified A. Rean. The main research methods are comparative (calculation of the χ2 test and Student t-test) and correlation (calculation of the Spearman correlation coefficient) analyzes. As a result of the study, it was proved that the professional and personal development of college teachers is characterized by its diversity and variability, associated primarily with the motives of their professional activity and with the level of formation of their readiness for self-development and self-education. A typology of individual trajectories of the professional growth of college teachers has been developed, which determines its main directions and content and includes adaptive, activating, stimulating and correcting types of individual trajectories. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that it is necessary, possible and advisable to use the variability principle when designing individual trajectories for college teachers' professional growth, which allows us to achieve our goals in practice and thereby contribute to the realization of the idea of continuing pedagogical education of pedagogical workers of modern educational organizations of secondary vocational education.

A new training program for managers at UK retailer Safeway encourages participants to decide their personal direction without reference to the company’s interests, on the basis that the individual is more interested than anyone else in his or her own development. The Aspire! program, described by Tyler, is positioned as a personal experience in a learning culture and a life program for aspiring individuals. It leaves participants free to decide everything from break times to what they learn once they have identified their personal directions. There are neither course objectives nor set criteria.
