The paper considers legal media discourse as a discursive format that arose as a result of the interaction of legal discourse and media discourse. The research is aimed at defining the boundaries, structure and categories of legal media discourse. The material of the research are texts of legal media discourse including analytical articles on legal issues, regulatory legal acts, news materials and other genres implemented within the boundaries of the discursive format under study. The research applies methods of scientific description (systematization and interpretation), discursive analysis, as well as the simulation method. The paper provides an overview of research in the field of legal discourse and media discourse, which helps to get closer to defining the boundaries of the format under study, which represents a promising direction for further research. As a result of the systematization of the theoretical and practical material, the boundaries and structure of legal media discourse are determined. It is established that the boundaries of legal media discourse, which is a hybrid discursive formation, lie within the intersection of legal discourse with media discourse. The resulting discursive space has a field structure (core, periphery) and represents a discourse format that concretizes two types of discourse (legal discourse and media discourse) and is represented in turn by different genres. The article gives the description of the categories of legal media discourse, which is based on the model proposed by V. I. Karasik. The paper reveals typical participants of communication, their possible presuppositions, sphere of functioning, chronotope, goals and strategies, genre organization. The author also discusses the issue of implementing the expressive function in legal media discourse through the use of colloquial and obscene lexemes.

A foreign jurist, on looking into the German literature on constitutional law, will soon and suddenly be struck by a peculiarity of this scholarship: the unusually strong emphasis on a marginal area of constitutional law, namely, the state of emergency. The inquiry is, of course, well-known in other countries, but the passion for, and the theoretical effort expended on, this marginal area is unique to Germany. However, this disinterest on the part of other constitutional lawyers, and the recent decline in interest on Germany's part, could yet change, turning the marginal area into a highly current issue. Combating terrorism raises questions for which the German patterns of argumentation, fine-tuned in the academic debate on the law of state of emergency, may provide a useful framework for discussion. The questions arising in the context of the struggle against terrorism test the limits of positive regulations in extreme situations, leading ultimately to the same underlying dilemma as the law on state of emergency, though with different terminology. In this sense, the constellation of legal issues involved in combating terrorism could be considered as the law on state of emergency “incognito.” However, the various argumentative patterns for law on state of emergency have not yet been directly transferred into the very timely legal discourse on counterterrorism (and no such attempt is made here), but such a transfer of argumentation suggests itself. As such, the topic has a “potential currency,” even if traditional issues of state of emergency themselves no longer count among the most current issues.

The article deals with the analysis of graphic-stylistic means of the language, such as punctuation, functioning in modern English based on the language material of literary and media texts (on-line site of The Guardian). The aim of the paper is to reveal some actual functional characteristics of punctuation marks compared with their traditional syntactic and stylistic usage. The linguistic analysis is conducted within the methodology of semantic and syntactic interpretation and description. The following new functional usage of punctuation marks is described: the playing (ludic) function (creating an ironic, comic or parody effect in communication) and the expressive function emphasizing the semantics of an element in a communicative context. The importance of the undertaken analysis is to show the necessity of studying the English punctuation functions from the point of view of modern theory of communication and media linguistics as well as with an empirical educational purpose of teaching the English grammar.

The article discusses the media discourse, analyzes its role in shaping the picture of the world of modern person: the typological features of the media text, the means and techniques of speech impact on the audience are highlighted. In the study of media texts, the author used the method of discursive analysis. As a result of an experimental study, linguistic techniques and means were revealed by which mass media influence the formation of public opinion, control communication in society. After analyzing publications in Russian media, the author comes to the conclusion that many of the linguistic techniques used in socio-political discourse today are mostly manipulative in nature, and are a powerful tool in the information confrontation. The identification of these tools and techniques, their systematization allows us to understand the specifics of the formation of the picture of the world of modern person, especially communication in society.

Modern linguistics is focused on the theory of lingual personology which sheds light on the ability of a lingual personality to generate and interpret texts, participate in various types of the discursive practice, model his/her communicative space within the plane of a respective lingual culture. Ego-texts as a type of the discursive practice manifest themselves in the system of speech genres. If an ego-text represents poetry it additionally belongs to a linguo-literary genre. The article sets out to characterize lingual creativity of S. I. Doroshenko in modelling his speech and linguo-literary ego-textual genre of a syncretic type – well-wishing-greeting-dedication whose samples are found in his book “Moya dusha i serce z Vamy” (“My soul and heart are with you”). This collection is viewed as a research ‘territory’, i.e. a discursive space to analyze relationship of S. I. Doroshenko with his closest communicants – his family, friends, students, adherents and supporters. Apart from traditional analysis the research of ego-texts involves new linguistic methods, in particular content analysis, intertextual analysis and narrative one. Methods of discursive analysis in this case aim to: а) explain the sense of social phenomena and b) determine the way of structuring these phenomena. The dominant genre in the ego-textual space of S. I. Doroshenko is greeting and sending regards, i.e. wishing all the best which can satisfy the addressee’s demands and drawing attention to an important event in his / her life, focusing on his / hr individuality and significance. Doroshenko’s ego-text is characterized by the high level of attraction as a manifestation of emotionally positive attitude to people, affection and spirituality. Еgo-textual idiostyle of S. I. Doroshenko includes the following features: epigraphs, jocular tone, puns, linguistic terms, precedency and intertextuality.

The paper presents the analysis of linguistic means of realization of persuasive strategies in motivational Ted Talks speeches. Nowadays, the popularity of Ted Talks gradually increases due to the variety of meticulously organized speeches presented to the view of society since the moment of TED’s creation. Millions of people from all around the world visit the online TED platform daily in search of inspiration, motivation and knowledge from various spheres. The object of our scientific research is the persuasive strategies in motivational Ted Talks speeches. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to identify and study the mechanisms of verbal realization of persuasive strategies in rhetorical and media discourse, as persuasion in discourse is one of the current problems of modern linguistics. The subject of the research is verbal means of realization of persuasive strategies in the discursive space of Ted Talks speeches. In the research the following methods have been used: the methods of analysis and deduction; the method of pragmatic analysis, the method of contextual analysis, and the descriptive method. The data of the research has been withdrawn from the transcripts of motivational Ted Talks speeches. The scientific novelty of the results obtained is in singling out the peculiarities of persuasive strategies realization in Ted Talks media discourse and working out the typology of persuasive strategies. The study is based on the three persuasive strategies outlined by the principle of rhetoric: ethos, logos, and pathos. Together, they support efficient persuasion and present the tools to effectively connect with the audience; know their interests, prejudices and expectations. Ethos is a persuasive strategy that allows an orator to establish their authority to speak on the subject, logos is categorized as a tool for implementing a logical argument into the speech to prove its point and pathos is a speaker’s attempt to influence the audience emotionally. The results prove that all three of those rhetorical persuasive strategies are frequently used by Ted Talks presenters in their motivational speeches. The appeals to credibility, logic and emotions are the key features implemented in the discursive space of Ted Talks as the necessary elements of persuasion. Key words: persuasive strategies, ethos, pathos, logos, motivational speeches, Ted Talks.

This study analyzes discourse about journalists’ privilege and libel law from 1894 to 1897 to explain how the press articulated the public policy rationale for legal protection at a pivotal moment in journalism history. To illuminate the relationship between emerging professional values and ideas about law, it applies the analytical lens of institutionalism. The study argues that the public policy rationale that appeared in the legal discourse surrounding these key legal issues was both a function of principled professional identity–building and a means of “institutional maintenance” intended to protect the press’s social status.

The article is devoted to the problem of the correlation of the categories of discourse and functional style in modern specialists` interpretations. Attention to this problem is caused, on the one hand, by the growing popularity of the discursive analysis and the very term discourse, and, on the other hand, by the fact, that functional style remains one of the important categories in Eastern Europe linguistics. The key theories of discourse and functional style; the common features of discourse and functional style; the criteria for their separation have been singled out. The concepts of M. Foucault’s discourse, French and German-Austrian discourse analysis, schools of N. Arutyunova, T. van Dijk, as well as the understanding of the style of V. V. Vinogradov and M. N. Kozhina have been involved for the theoretical comparison of the above-mentioned categories. According to modern researchers, discourse and functional style relate to the neighbouring linguistic disciplines and have common features. One of them is extralinguistic factor, which directly determine the specificity of discourse and functional style. At the same time, researchers put borders for discourse and functional style, recognizing the complexity of the problem of their separation. The differentiation of the categories is carried out by means of the ontological criterion: the discourse is interpreted via the concept of “discursive formation”, while style is interpreted via “the form of public consciousness”. Accordingly, scholars come to the conclusion about the diversity of structure and nature of the discourse and functional style. The importance of each concept is stated and the neccessity of their joint application for a deeper linguistic analysis of the text is emphasized. The correlation of the discourse and functional style is also considered on the basis of the textocentric model of discourse. The thesis about a certain hierarchical subordination of the methods of stylistics and discourse-analysis is argued. It is said about the “embedding” of the stylistics into the subject of discourse analysis, which promotes interdisciplinary enrichment: in this case, the discourse analysis acquires the proper “linguostylistic” content, and stylistics is realized in the frames of functional parameters of the discourse.

The current state of the problem of studying and teaching foreign language legal discourse is presented. Various points of view on discourse as an interdisciplinary phenomenon are analyzed. Legal discourse is considered as a kind of institutional discourse. Communication of participants in legal discourse is carried out on the basis of a certain number of rules that govern their role and normative behavior. In their actions, there is coordination inherent in this form of communication and allowing the participants in legal discourse to be perceived as components of a single whole – a larger institutional system. A brief description of the functions of legal discourse is given – prescriptive, informative, argumental, declarative, regulatory, interpretive, cumulative, presentation, strategic and code. Such properties of legal discourse as performativity and intertex-tuality are discussed, and its components are described. The difference between legal texts, in which the discourse of law is implemented, from texts of other specialties is shown. They are created in the legal language as a type of language for special purposes and have intra- and exter-nal-text specificity. Legal texts, in spite of their genre variety, have a predominantly standard for-mat. Such types of legal text as court decisions and regulations, powers of attorney and contracts, wills, etc., have a specific construction plan, are divided into parts in a certain way and are drawn up graphically. Discursive analysis is considered as the most acceptable method of studying and teaching a foreign language of law.
