The purpose of this study is to use a roundtable technique to improve the writing capacity of S1 English education studies students at FKIP UNIB. This study's architecture is based on classroom action studies. It was completed in three cycles. The instruments are a checklist, an observation, and a measure. The results of the checklist revealed that there was an improvement in student activity from cycles 1, 2, and 3. Meanwhile, the observation outcome represented an increase in students' awareness of the roundtable strategy's application from the first to third period. Finally, the test result indicated an improvement in score from cycle 1 to cycle 3 name from 75, 79, and 83.5. The results of the three instruments indicate that the roundtable approach will increase the writing capacity of English education research programme students. This strategy can be used in teaching writing for students.Keywords : boosting English, writing ability, roundtable strategy

This paper aims to investigate the use of Facebook in enhancing English writing skill of Indonesian students in the secondary high school context. The result of this research is hopefully beneficial to overcome English writing difficulties of secondary high school students in Indonesia. The discussion informs that Facebook utilisation in teaching writing improves learners motivation to write in English, increases grammar mastery of the students, and provides abundant learning materials for the learners to develop their English writing ability. The result of this study will be useful as a reference for English teachers to adjust Facebook use into their teaching practice in order to help students in improving their English writing skill.

Instagram is one of the social media platforms that used as a media for educational purposes. This study aimed at investigating university students' perceptions of using Instagram as an online platform to explore their creativity in English writing skill. The study used a quantitative research design. The participants of this study were students of the English Education Department of Universitas Islam Negeri Surabaya, who took a Writing English course and used Instagram in their learning activity. The questionnaire was used to collect data of this present research in the form of five-point Likert scale statements that expressed in strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree. The descriptive quantitative were conducted on the data of analyzing the students' perceptions of using Instagram to know their responses. The findings indicated that the students demonstrated positive perceptions in using Instagram to interact with their lecture and classmates on Instagram to improve their English writing ability. The result of this research can inform that the use of Instagram in teaching writing can also shape them to become more creative and enjoyable in English writing learning.

The background of the study was based on the phenomenon at the seventh graders of the SMP BOPRI Godean. Learning English especially writing skill were still low in mastering vocabulary, sentence structure, and paragraph organizing. The research aimed (1) to analyze the students’ writing by using scaffolding technique; (2) to describe the improvement of the students’ writing skill by using scaffolding technique; and (3) to find out the students’ interests in writing skill by using scaffolding technique. To solve the problem, the researcher conducted Classroom Action Research and applied scaffolding technique in teaching English to improve student’s ability in writing skill. The participants of this research were the 14 students of the seventh graders of SMP BOPKRI Godean. In this study, the researcher conducted a scaffolding technique of teaching writing descriptive text in three cycles by using scaffolding model adapted from Silvia Read. The five steps in scaffolding technique by Silvia Read were inquiry, modeling, shared, collaborative, and independent. The researcherexpected that the students could improve their writing skill by using the scaffolding technique and interested in English writing skill. The result of this study was showed by pre-test and post-test. In pre-test, the students’ average score was 49, whereas in the students’ post-test cycle one, the students’ average score was 64. In the second cycle, the students’ average score was 75.9. Finally, the researcher could conclude that the result of this research showed an improvement of the students’ writing skills by using scaffolding technique.

The study was aimed to examine the effectiveness of three writing techniques, namely Cluster Mapping, Flow Charting, and Double/ Triple Entry in improving the students’ writing skill. The research technique used was descriptive comparative technique using a quantitative approach. It compared the equations and differences as phenomena to find what factors/ situations that can cause the occurrence of a particular event. The data collection techniques were Documentation study by taking the students’ writing product and interview by giving the question and answer while face to face between the interviewer with the respondent using a tool called interview guide. The try out was conducted to measure validity and reliability. The two ways ANOVA was conducted to test the hypotheses, two –way analysis of variance with F-test at the 5% (0.05) level of significance. The subject of this study was the fourth semester English students with a total of 22 people. The English students’ writing skill using three techniques was tobe the object under the study. The findings of the study were the average writing score of students using Cluster Mapping was 56.5, the average score of students’ writing using Flow Charting was 49.6, and the average score of students’ writing using Double/ Triple Entry was 63.0. Essay is the most essential part in writing critical essay. It is one of the subjects that learned by English students. CIRC is a method to improve students’ writing ability. Cooperative integrated reading composition (CIRC) was implemented on students’ writing skill through quasi experimental research; post-test only group design. Sample of the research was thirty nine students. Writing test was used to collect the data and analyzed by using independent t-test. The finding was students who were taught by cooperative integrated reading composition (CIRC) had better scores of writing critical essay than those who were taught by small group discussion. It meant that CIRC give an effect toward students to improve their writing skill.

This study is aimed to know teaching learning process in writing by using padlet application for Primary Education Department’s students whether there is improvement of students writing English skill by using that application. Subject of this research was third semester students of Primary Education Department. This is a Classroom Action Research. In collecting the data, the writer  used some techniques: observation, interview, and writing test. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Result of this research were: those application can be implemented as online writing practices every time that made students ability improve, the situation of wall in padlet can stimulate students to explore idea because they could upload video, recording, or picture suitable with topic that can support their writing. Students improvement in writing can be seen from postest score in every cycles. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that implementing padlet application can improve students Non English Department’ writing skill.

Writing is one amongst the important skills learned in English. In writing, people express their ideas and opinions. In this era of advanced communication technology, the use of social media to teach and assist students to learn is common for educators. This research investigated the effectiveness of using Instragram in teaching writing of descriptive texts.� As pre-experimental research, this research used written tests of descriptive texts as the main instrument and interview as the supplementary data collection technique. The samples of this research were eleventh grade students of Social one of a public senior high school in Semarang. The result of this research showed that there was a significant difference on the students� ability of writing descriptive texts before and after the treatment. The interview responses also indicated that using Instagram post as visual media for learning descriptive was effective. In conclusion Instagram posts as visual media in teaching descriptive texts can improve student�s writing ability of descriptive text.

<p><strong>Abstract:</strong> Language transfer always becomes an interesting topic to discuss in SLA. From the two types of language transfer take place in the process of language learning, this research aims to investigate the positive transfer occurs in junior high school students’ writing skill. The two languages to be involved in this research, Indonesian as L1 and English as L2. The analysis of the positive transfer within writing skill in this research is carried out under the theory of ‘Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis’ proposed by Cummins. Correlational research design is employed to analyze the correlation between the students’ L1 (Indonesian) writing ability and L2 (English) writing ability. The analysis result shows that the positive transfer in students’ writing does not exist. This happens due to the lack of exposure that the students have in practicing L2 (English) writing.</p><strong>Abstrak:<em> </em></strong>Transfer bahasa selalu menjadi topik yang menarik untuk dibicarakan dalam pemerolehan bahasa kedua. Dari dua jenis transfer bahasa yang terjadi dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi transfer positif yang terjadi dalam keterampilan menulis siswa SMP. Ada dua bahasa yang dilibatkan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu bahasa bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Analisis transfer positif dalam keterampilan menulis pada penelitian ini mengacu pada teori ‘<em>Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis</em>’ yang digagas oleh Cummins. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode korelasional untuk menganalisis korelasi kemampuan menulis siswa dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada transfer positif yang terjadi dalam tulisan siswa. Hal ini terjadi karena kurangnya pajanan yang diterima siswa untuk mengasah keterampilan menulis dalam bahasa Inggris.

Abstract This article reports a study on English writing skill of Indonesian tertiary students. The purpose of the study is to examine students’ initial ability in writing English compositions.  The subjects of the study are 22 university students in their first year at English Language and Literature study program at one university in Bandung. The data are taken from students’ descriptive essays written in the classroom. The texts are then analyzed based on writing rubrics developed by Lane and Lange (1999) to see the recurrent global and local errors, supported by analytic writing rubrics proposed by Jacobs et al. (1981) to see the students’ writing ability in general. The results of the study show that the recurrent errors made in twenty-two English descriptive essays are singular/plural nouns for local errors and sentence structure for global errors. In terms of analytic view, errors in language use are the most frequent errors made by the students. The findings provide useful information for constructing teaching materials for English writing in this study program.Keywords: writing skill, descriptive text, composition scoring technique, analytic scoring technique, global and local errors. Abstrak Artikel ini melaporkan hasil kajian mengenai keterampilan menulis bahasa Inggris mahasiswa. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memotret kemampuan awal menulis mahasiswa dalam bahasa Inggris. Adapun subjek penelitian adalah 22 orang mahasiswa tingkat I di Program Studi Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, di sebuah universitas di Bandung  yang dipilih untuk mengetahui kemampuan awal mereka. Data diperoleh melalui karangan deskriptif yang ditulis di kelas.Teks dianalisis dengan menggunakan rubrik penilaian yang dikembangkan oleh Lane and Lange (1999) untuk tataran global dan lokal (global and local errors); dan rubrik penilaian analitik yang dikembangkan oleh Jacobs (1981) untuk melihat keterampilan menulis mahasiswa secara umum. Analisis data menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan yang paling banyak dilakukan mahasiswa pada tataran lokal terkait pemarka nomina tunggal dan jamak (singular/plural nouns), sedangkan pada tataran global, kesalahan pada struktur kalimat (sentence structure) merupakan kesalahan yang paling sering dilakukan oleh mahasiswa. Dari sisi analitik, kesalahan pada penggunaan bahasa merupakan kesalahan yang paling sering ditemukan dalam kebanyakan tulisan mahasiswa.Hasil temuan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan masukan bagi penyusunan bahan ajar matakuliah menulis di lingkungan program studi. Kata kunci: keterampilan menulis, teks deskriptif, teknik penilaian tulisan, teknik penilaian analitik, kesalahan global dan local.

Writing is one of productive skills, and teaching writing needs to concern many aspects. One of them is teaching aid. Appropriate teaching aid, like picture series, can help students optimize their learning process in writing. The research objective is to discover the effectiveness of picture series in improving students’ writing ability of narrative text. The writer used an experimental method. The population of this research was the students of SMKN 2 Tangerang Selatan. The samples were taken from two classes of the twelfth graders majoring in Accounting. The writer took 31 students for the samples in experiment class and 32 students in control class. The data that the writer got from the research were using the t-test formula. The findings show that using picture series is effective in improving students’ writing ability. The result is tobserved =  2.73   and ttable = 1.67. Because to > tt , it means there is a significant effectiveness to improve in students’ writing ability using picture series. The findings are expected to be useful for the students to help them improve their English writing ability of narrative text. Additionally, it gives information to the teachers to know appropriate teaching aids to teach writing ability for the students.
