The aims of this research were to describe experiential meaning variation of English BBC news texts (T1) and Bahasa Indonesia BBC news texts (T2) which were functional grammatically represented in transitivity clause units, to identify the factors that cause the experiential meaning breadth variation of T1-T2, and to map the context of highest variation of T1-T2. This qualitative research applied semantic content analysis of experiential meaning with the researcher as research instrument. The results of this study show that experiential meaning variation of T1-T2 is dominated by highest scale of variation. Transfer-based perspective includes T2 as bad translation, while hermeneutic-based includes T2 as a good translation. Experiential meaning breadth variation of T1-T2 are mainly caused by the ideology of translation of BBC and translators involved in translation process that allows adjustment to the new readership and to the naturalness of the use of Indonesian language to occur. The constrictions of experiential meaning breadth variation mostly are caused by the addition of clause-rank meaning units which are not part of T1 and the existence of summary and/or synthesis of some T1 clause-rank meaning units.

Nowadays, people can easily access everything with one-click away. For example, when you want to read an article in foreign language which you are not familiar with, then you just need to open Google Translate and within seconds, you will get the translation of it. To deal with that reality, a translator has to differentiate himself from machine translation which is increasingly used by the public. Therefore, the translator is required to produce an equivalent and natural translation in the Target Language. This research aims to provide understanding of translation equivalence on video transcripts conducted by students in Movie Translation (Subtitling) course. This study uses qualitative approach, content analysis method, and purposive sampling to collect data. In short, there are two types of translation equivalence used by students, formal and dynamic. Formal equivalence focuses on the similarity of the form and meaning of the message from Source Language to Target Language, while dynamic one focuses on the naturalness of expression in the Target Language.

If the primary purpose of the translation is to promote the culture, it is considered adequate to choose the foreignization over the domestication as the ideology of the translation when it comes to the translation of culture-specific items. However, deciding what ideology should be used in the translation process is complicated. There are many factors that can affect the ideology of a translation. Both ideologies can lead to totally different results of the accuracy of the meaning of the translations. This research was content analysis of Historical Book Discover Bengkulu The Land of Rafflesia. Any translation practice is intended to produce a text which is equivalent in meaning with its source text. However, to arrive at such equivalence is not an easy task due to a number of differences between the source language and the target language. Therefore, finding the right equivalence is a problem often encountered by translators, especially student translators. Suggested by such problem, a study on equivalence problems and possible strategies to solve the problems is obviously necessary. This article aims at finding out the problems of equivalence encountered and the strategies to solve such problems applied by student translators in translating a historical recount text. This is a descriptive study taking 10 student translators as the participants who were asked to translate a historical recount text from English into bahasa Indonesia. The data were collected using Translog that recorded all the translation process done by the student translators. The results of the study were: (i) the student translators encountered five equivalence problems while translating a historical recount text from English into bahasa Indonesia; and (ii) to solve such problems, they applied six strategies (naturalization, borrowing, description, deletion, addition and generalization). The findings imply that the problems were motivated by the student translators’ lack of cultural understanding of the source language.

This study addresses the translation of passive voice in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban into Bahasa Indonesia. The study was based on descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected by applying documentary techniques. There were three chapters taken as the source of the data. They were chapters 1, 8 and 15. The findings indicated that there were two types of passive voices as a product of passive voices’ translation in Bahasa Indonesia. It caused the use of prefix di+verb base, prefix di+verb base suffix i, and prefix di +verb base+ suffix+ kan are able to represent the meaning of the SL literally and culturally. The changing of English passive voice into Bahasa Indonesia active voice when they were translated indicated that the translator has attempted to find the closest natural equivalent of the source language in aspect of grammar, style, and cultural value. In essence naturalization rate of an expression is a matter of looking for matches in level lexical categories, grammatical categories, semantic, and cultural context.   Key words: translation, passive voice, English, Bahasa Indonesia.

The article deals with the peculiarities of transformations in the process of translation of English prose into Ukrainian. Despite the large number of works covering this issue, the problem of translating prose texts is not dismissed. There is a need to systematize and study the types of lexical and grammatical transformations, used in translating literary texts, in practice. To observe the process of formation of inter-language transformations, the novel by an Irish writer Colm Toibin ‘House of Names’ has been chosen. The various scientists’ approaches to establishing the transformation types are analyzed. It is revealed that due to differences in the syntactic, grammatical and morphological structures of the English and Ukrainian languages, lexical and grammatical transformations are widely used in translation. Lexical transformations are the deviations from direct vocabulary matches. The lexical transformations are mainly caused by the fact that the volume of the lexical units of the original language and the language of translation do not coincide. Among lexical transformations, the most common are generalization, concretization, compensation, lexical additions. Grammatical transformations are to transform the structure of a sentence in the translation process according to the rules of the source language. The transformation can be complete or partial depending on whether the structure of the sentence changes completely or partially. The article presents the examples of the grammatical transformations of inversion, replacement, addition and omission comparing the original text and its translation.
