As part of an ongoing project to evaluate elite track and field throwers in the United States, the javelin competition was filmed during the 1983 Pepsi Invitational Track Meet. A high-speed video camera (Spin Physics SP2000) was positioned orthogonal to the javelin runway to record the release of all throws. During this competition, Tom Petranoff’s world record (99.72 m) was filmed at 200 fields per second. Subsequent frame-by-frame digitization yielded results consistent with reports in the literature. Release velocity was 32.3 m/s and represents one of the highest values ever reported. Angle of release was .57r, javelin attitude at release was .64r» and angle of attack was .07r. While optimum values for these release parameters, in light of published results, remain open to discussion, the results presented here represent unique information on a world record performance and can serve as a basis of comparison for future performances.

Intralimb kinetics of the paw-shake response (PSR) were studied in four spinal, adult cats. Using rigid body equations of motion to determine the dynamic interactions between limb segments, knee and ankle joint kinetics were calculated for the steady-state cycles as defined in the preceding paper. Hindlimb motion was filmed (200 frames/s) to obtain knee and ankle kinematics. Responses of flexors and extensors at both joints were recorded synchronously with cinefilm. Ankle and knee joint kinematics were determined from 51 steady-state cycles of 16 PSRs. Average maximum displacements, velocities, and accelerations were substantially greater for the ankle than for the knee joint. Knee and ankle motions were out of phase in the first part of the cycle; knee extension occurred simultaneously with ankle flexion. In the second part of the cycle, motions at the two joints were sequential; rapid knee flexion, accompanied by negligible ankle displacement, preceded rapid ankle extension with minimal knee displacement. At the ankle joint, peak net moments tending to cause flexion and extension were similar in magnitude and determined primarily by muscle moments. Moments due to leg angular acceleration contributed significantly to an extensor peak in the net moment near the end of the cycle. Other inertial and gravitational moments were small. At the knee joint, net moments tending to cause flexion and extension were also similar, but smaller than those at the ankle. The knee muscle moments, however, were large and counteracted large inertial moments due to paw angular acceleration. Also, moments due to leg angular acceleration and knee linear acceleration were substantial and opposite in effect. Other inertial and the gravitational moments were negligible. Muscle moments slowed and reversed joint motions, and active muscle force components of muscle moments were derived from lengthening of active musculotendinous units. Segmental interactions, in which proximal segment motion augmented distal segment velocity, increased the effectiveness of PSR steady-state cycles by facilitating the generation of extremely large paw linear accelerations. Limb oscillations during PSR steady-state result from interactions between muscle synergies and motion-dependent limb dynamics. At the ankle, muscle activity functioned to control paw acceleration, whereas at the knee, muscle activity functioned to control leg and paw inertial interactions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract Introduction:„Runner’s knee”, in other words Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is the second, after PFPS, in terms of incidence frequency overuse injury amongst runners - 8.5 %. It is the most common cause of lateral knee pain. It mainly occurs in middle aged athletes, in the second decade of life. Cyclists, skiers, weight lifters, soccer and tennis players are next groups, where this clinical entity occurs. ITBS is typical overuse injury which results from cyclic friction (or compression) of iliotibial band on lateral epicondyle of femur. Training errors are main risk factors. Biomechanical disorders leading to this entity are: weakness of gluteus medius, lack of functional hip mobility, weakness of knee flexors and extensors, shortness of hip adductors, limited hip internal rotation. Improper saddle height, frame size or incorrect pedal position can cause ITBS among cyclists. Case study:Professional cyclist was referred to Rehabilitation Centre, complaining about severe pain located at lateral side of the right knee, lasting from 4 months. The pain was described as burning, sharp, increasing during biking, finally disabling him to continue sports activity. After biomechanical analysis we introduced functional re-education training correcting disbalances, the causes of injury. The role of tri-planar, eccentric exercises rotating the pelvis is underlined. After 7 weeks of aggressive, functional rehabilitation resumed sports activity without pain and functional limitations. Conclusions:An early diagnosis of ITBS allows for shorter rehabilitation time. It’s necessary to precisely determine biomechanical disorders leading to ITBS. 7-week rehabilitation, with functional, three dimensional exercises is effective mean of ITBS treatment. We recommend to continue this kind of exercises for 6-12 months to prevent injury recurrence
