ABSTRACT In the content contained in milkfish such as protein and fat is a suitable medium for the growth of spoilage bacteria or other microorganisms. One way to maintain its quality by providing preservatives to inhibit bacterial growth is to provide natural preservatives such as turmeric. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of turmeric as a preservative for milkfish (chanos chanos). This research is a quasi-experimental type of research, namely the treatment of the use of turmeric grater and solution as a preservative in milkfish (chanos chanos) to determine the physical durability of milkfish. The results of the physical condition examination were seen from the appearance of the eyes, surface mucus, meat, body texture in the preservation of milkfish using 65 grams of turmeric solution, showing contact time 1 hour, 8 hours, 16 hours, 21 hours organoleptic value did not exceed the minimum limit of 7, but contact time 22 hours shelf life has been damaged. The results of physical condition examination on milkfish preservation samples using 65 gr turmeric grated effectively preserved at the contact time of 23 hours while the contact time of 24 hours has been damaged. While the milkfish without treatment have suffered damage in the span of 8 hours. The conclusion obtained is that grated turmeric is better able to preserve milkfish in a long time compared to using turmeric solution. Suggestion We recommend using turmeric natural preservatives with grated turmeric to preserve milkfish because the durability of using turmeric grated is longer compared to the turmeric solution seen from physical conditions.

ABSTRACT The use of natural preservatives has attracted considerable attention owing to their generally safe and environmentally friendly properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of the preservative A1, composed of plantaricin 163, thymol, and surfactin, on bacterial communities and storage quality of refrigerated crucian carp. A total of 522 operational taxonomic units belonging to 20 phyla and 272 genera were identified by high-throughput sequencing, showing a comprehensive coverage of bacterial composition of crucian carp. In untreated samples after spoilage, Brochothrix was the predominant genus, followed by Aeromonas and Pseudomonas. After treatment with A1, the growth of these spoilage bacteria was significantly inhibited according to high-throughput sequencing and plate counts, and Lactococcus became the most abundant organism at the end of storage. Meanwhile, compared with control samples, the shelf life of A1-treated samples extended from 3 to 12 days on the basis of the sensory evaluation and the total viable counts. Furthermore, the total volatile basic nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid, and pH values for A1-treated samples were significantly lower than that of control samples. The results indicate that preservative A1 has potential commercial application in the preservation of refrigerated crucian carp.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the microbiological and physicochemical characteristics in different commercial brands of a Brazilian minimally ripened (coalho) cheese during 60 days of storage under refrigeration. Combinations of maximum and minimum values of water activity and pH determined in cheese samples at refrigeration temperature (7°C) were used in a bacterial growth prediction analysis. Maximum growth rate (Grmax) was estimated for different pathogenic and/or spoilage bacteria using the ComBase Predictor. Results of microbiological characterization analyses showed persistent high counts for all monitored microbial groups (Lactobacillus spp., Lactococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacteriaceae, proteolytic and lipolytic microorganisms, and fungi) in cheese samples; no dominant microbial group was observed over time. Values of pH (6.03 ± 0.16 to 7.28 ± 0.55), acidity (0.15% ± 0.09% to 0.66% ± 0.26%), sodium chloride (1.05% ± 0.19% to 1.97% ± 0.75%), and water activity (0.948 ± 0.020 to 0.974 ± 0.012) did not vary in cheese samples during storage. Estimated Grmax values for the tested bacteria were in the range of 0.004 to 0.044 log CFU/h. Highest Grmax values (0.005 to 0.044 log CFU/h) were predicted for the psychrotrophic Aeromonas hydrophila, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas spp., and Yersinia enterocolitica. Grmax values predicted for Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus were in the range of 0.004 to 0.016 log CFU/h. These results indicate unsatisfactory microbiological characteristics of commercially available coalho cheese. Physicochemical characteristics of commercial coalho cheese stored under refrigeration allow bacterial growth to occur, indicating higher risk for fast growth of contaminant bacteria in this product.

Buffaloes are the major production animals in most of the South Asian countries including Nepal. The buffalo, however, is a sluggish breeder and is beset with various constraints which adversely influence its fertility; such as, problems of silent heat coupled with poor expression of oestrus, irregular oestrus cycles, anoestrus, prolonged days open and low conception rates (Madan and Prakash, 2006). Among them, anoestrus is the most commonly encountered condition leading to reproductive failure and culling in buffaloes. However, the ovarian status of such buffaloes is poorly understood. The present study aims to investigate the ovarian status, uterine pathology and physical condition of anoestrus and culled buffaloes in Chitwan, Nepal. The buffaloes in Nepal are generally culled if they fail to conceive for long time or the production is seized.

Objective: The aim of this study was to report nationally representative data on the prevalence and patterns of 12 month comorbidity of chronic physical conditions (diabetes, asthma, coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, arthritis) and DSM-IV affective and anxiety disorders in Australian adults. Method: The 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (NSMHWB) was a nationally representative household survey of 8841 Australian adults (16–85 years) assessing symptoms of ICD-10 mental disorders and the presence of chronic physical conditions. Results: Prevalence of at least one National Health Priority Area chronic physical condition was 32.2% (95%CI = 30.9%–33.5%). Among those with chronic physical conditions 21.9% had an affective or anxiety disorder. Affective and anxiety disorders were more common among people with physical conditions than among people without chronic physical conditions (affective OR 1.5; anxiety OR 1.8). Of those with a 12 month affective or anxiety disorder, 45.6% had a chronic physical condition. Physical disorders were more common in those with an affective or anxiety disorder than among people without an affective or anxiety disorder (affective OR 1.6; anxiety OR 2.0). Disability was high in those with an anxiety disorder, an affective disorder and a physical condition and 43.4% were classified as high service users. Conclusions: Comorbidity between chronic physical conditions and affective and anxiety disorders is widespread and is associated with high levels of disability and service use.

Objective: The comorbidity of mental disorders with chronic physical conditions is known to have important clinical consequences, but it is not known whether mental-physical comorbidity influences mental health treatment seeking. This study investigates whether the presence of a chronic physical condition influences the likelihood of seeking treatment for a mental health problem, and whether that varies among ethnic subgroups in New Zealand. Methods: Analyses were based on a subsample ( n = 7,435) of The New Zealand Mental Health Survey, a nationally representative household survey of adults (response rate 73.3%). Ethnic subgroups (Maori and Pacific peoples) were oversampled. DSM-IV mental disorders were measured face-to-face with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 3.0). Ascertainment of chronic physical conditions was via self-report. Results: In the general population, having a chronic medical condition increased the likelihood of seeking mental health treatment from a general practitioner (OR: 1.58), as did having a chronic pain condition (OR: 2.03). Comorbid chronic medical conditions increased the likelihood of seeking mental health treatment most strongly among Pacific peoples (ORs: 2.86–4.23), despite their being less likely (relative to other ethnic groups) to seek mental health treatment in the absence of physical condition comorbidity. Conclusion: In this first investigation of this topic, this study finds that chronic physical condition comorbidity increases the likelihood of seeking treatment for mental health problems. This provides reassurance to clinicians and health service planners that the difficult clinical problem of mental-physical comorbidity is not further compounded by the comorbidity itself constituting a barrier to mental health treatment seeking.
