Geriatric population (> 60 years) is rapidly increasing in India, It has been increased upto 8.6% in 2011. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder and a major health problem, a?ecting a large section of the Indian population, especially as its incidence increases with advancing age. Host of complications are associated with this disease, one of which is the e?ect on platelet count. This study compares platelet count between diabetic and non-diabetic elderly. It is observed that Hyperglycaemia in diabetic persons is responsible for increased Thrombopoietin production at the cellular level, which leads to raised platelet count -Reticulated Thrombocytosis – when compared to non diabetics. Platelets, especiallyreticulated thrombocytes are associated with uncontrolled blood sugar levels in the body and are well known for their role in artherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Keywords: platelet count, diabetic and non-diabetic & geriatric.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become a major health problem because of the associated high morbidity and mortality rates observed in affected patients. Gut microbiota has recently been implicated as a novel endocrine organ that plays critical roles in the regulation of cardiometabolic and renal functions of the host via the production of bioactive metabolites. This review investigated the evidence from several clinical and experimental studies that indicated an association between the gut microbiota-derived toxins and CVDs. We mainly focused on the pro-inflammatory gut microbiota-derived toxins, namely lipopolysaccharides, derived from Gram-negative bacteria, and trimethylamine N-oxide and described the present status of research in association with these toxins, including our previous research findings. Several clinical studies aimed at exploring the effectiveness of reducing the levels of these toxins to inhibit cardiovascular events are currently under investigation or in the planning stages. We believe that some of the methods discussed in this review to eliminate or reduce the levels of such toxins in the body could be clinically applied to prevent CVDs in the near future.

Osteoporosis is a major international health problem, accentuated by increasing longevity. Osteoporosis as “a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and bone architectural leading to increased risk”. Menopause is the normal process but now a day it becoming the major health problem in developing countries like India. In Ayurveda Menopause deals with jarapakvaavasta of the body Jara and Rajonivritti are manifested due to the progressive reduction in the functional ability of Agnis, which results in an inadequate tissue nutrition. This nutritional imbalance triggers the irreversible degenerative changes in „Sapta Dhatus‟. The disease Osteoporosis is somewhat similar to the description of Asthi Kshaya in which metabolism of Asthi Dhatu is disturbed. Rasayana therapy has proved efficacious in managing and preventing many chronic conditions till date. As Postmenopausal Osteoporosis is a disease related to aging, Rasayana can provide the better alternative to increasing quality of life. Here, the drug Lashuna also one of the Rasayana guna dravya.

Kata Kunci: daun kemangi, diabetes, eugenol, asam ursolat DECREASED BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS USING TULSI LEAVES ABSTRACT Diabetes in Indonesia is considered a major health problem and has been a concern since the early 1980s. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in Indonesia. Indonesia is rated as one of the top ten countries globally with a high number of individuals with diabetes in 2013. It is estimated that the same pattern will continue unless interventions to prevent and manage diabetes are implemented. The method used in this study is a literature review. Literature sources used in the preparation involved 18 libraries originating from books, national journals and international journals. The year of publication of library sources used in article writing is from 2010 to 2018. Various studies have shown significant results regarding the effect of tulsi leaves on reducing blood sugar levels. Eugenol on basil leaves has several antidiabetic mechanisms such as inhibitory activity of α-glucosidases, inhibition of AGE formation, prevent glucose attachment to serum albumin and increase concentration of antioxidant enzymes. Ursolic acid in tulsi leaves stimulates glucose uptake in various ways. Keyword: tulsi, diabetes, eugenol, ursolic acid

Shalya Tantra is a significant branch of Ayurveda. The name of the sage-physician Susruta is well known in the field of surgery. Many surgical and para-surgical techniques have been described for the management of various diseases. Vrana is one of them which have been managed by a human being from starting of civilization. Under the circumstances, the first thing which the man came across was the injury from different sources which was causing Vrana (wound). The wound is very common in both developed and developing countries. It is a breach in the normal tissue continuum, resulting in a variety of cellular & molecular sequel. A wound is a major health problem because the incidence of severe complications is high & financial resources are limited. Vrana is an important chapter of Shalya Tantra due to its involvement in many surgical conditions. This, phenomena of Vrana is not only limited to the cutaneous lesion but may also extend up to muscles blood vessels, ligaments, bones, joints, visceral organs and other vital parts of the body. The diagnostic criterion has been dealt in a very detailed manner by Acharya Susruth. In this article, efforts have been made to throw light on the pathology of Vrana, its classification, diagnosis, and it’s healing.

Abstract Background Obesity is a major health problem that affects different vascular systems, including cerebrovascular circulation. Carotid duplex is the best screening tool for early diagnosis of cerebrovascular changes in relation to different risk factors including obesity. The present study aims to evaluate the effect of body mass index on the parameters of extracranial vessels in healthy subjects using vascular duplex ultrasonography. Results The intimal medial thickness in the common carotid is found to increase as the body mass index and body weight increase (directly related), with this increase being significant (P-value < 0.05). Conclusion These findings indicate that increase in body mass index can adversely affect duplex parameters of the common carotid artery. Clinical trial registration NCT03252652. Registered August 16th 2017

Microfilaria infection is one of the major health problem in developing countries like India, especially in rural areas. In most of the cases microfilaria was an incidental finding in FNAC smears prepared from swellings from various locations in the body and also from fluid aspirate. Peripheral blood smear examination is usually done for the diagnosis. Here, we presented a series of eight cases with very unusual and rare locations. We found microfilaria in subcutaneous arm swelling, pleural effusion, axillary swelling, breast and salivary gland. All cases were rare and unique.

Background: Malaria is a major health problem in many parts of India. Several factors have beenattributed to increased morbidity and mortality in malaria with altered hematological andcoagulation parameters. This study was conducted to compare the coagulation parameters ofmalaria cases with those of the healthy carriers. Aims and objectives: To evaluate coagulationabnormalities in patients of malaria and to study the difference in coagulation parameters betweenmalaria patients and healthy controls and to determine the level of significance of the difference.Materials and methodology: This prospective comparative study of 300 patients with laboratorydiagnosed malaria patients (cases) and 300 healthy individuals (controls) was carried out in theDepartment of Pathology in a tertiary care, V. S. General Hospital, Ahmedabad. Result: Comparisonof platelet count, PT, and aPTT between case groups and control groups was statistically significant(p<0.001). Conclusion: There is a significant difference between the platelet count, PT, and aPTTvalues of the two groups. This indicates that in patients with malaria, there is an activation ofintrinsic and extrinsic pathways of coagulation.
