Floods that occurred in the city of Banjarbaru especially those that occurred in residential areas caused problems for the community as well as challenges for the government to evaluate the drainage channel in the settlement. The existing rainwater drainage channels need to be reviewed and developed so that they can accommodate the water flowing in the area. One of the settlements that had occurred in the city of Banjarbaru was a residential area in Cempaka Subdistrict, Cempaka Village, precisely on Jalan Getah Tunggal. The data needed in this study are rainfall data, land use data, topographic data and existing data on channel conditions at the study site. Rainfall data were analyzed by Log Pearson III, Gumbel and Iwai Kadoya methods, then tested by Chi Square to choose the distribution of statistics received. The rainfall data was analyzed into the intensity of hourly rain using the mononobe method. Rain intensity is analyzed using a rational method to get a plan debit (Qchannel). Furthermore (the plan) is compared with (Qchannel), and (Qexisting). Based on the calculation results obtained (Qplanning) of 0.76 m3/sec, (Qchannel) of 0.78 m3/sec, (Qexisting) of 0.0645 m3/sec, the comparison results are obtained (Qchannel)>(Qplanning), (Qexisting) <(Qplanning). So that it can be concluded that the causes of flooding and inundation are sediments as high as 70 cm which reduce the storage capacity of the initial dimensions of the channel

AbstractThis article assessed community participation in the provision of environmental sanitation infrastructure in Akure, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling procedure was employed for the study. Four residential zones: the traditional core, the transition zone, the peripheral zone and the public housing district were identified, this was with a view to showcasing the variation in the level of contributions and efforts of different communities based on the delineated areas towards the provision of environmental sanitation infrastructure in the study area. Twenty residential areas were identified across the residential zones of the study area out of which ten areas which represented 50% of the total areas were selected. Ten percent of the total number of buildings in the selected areas were subsequently sampled, resulting in the selection of 180 residents for questionnaire administration. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics with frequency used for univariate analysis and cross tabulation for bivariate and multivariate analysis as well as the use of chi-square for inferential statistics. Findings revealed that community participation did not play a leading role in providing environmental sanitation facilities in Akure, but that the government did. This shows that most of the environmental facilities in the area are provided by the government, thus revealing the overdependence of the residents on the government for the provision of environmental sanitation infrastructure. Further findings revealed that most of the challenges faced in the study area in terms of providing environmental sanitation infrastructure had a significant influence on the provision of these facilities. Thus, the study showed that challenges significantly hindered the provision of environmental sanitation facilities in the area.

Peoples’ opinion has been an adjudged tool for proffering solution to various urban problems. By this, information is sourced to guide policy-makers and other environmentally concerned stakeholders in taking enlightened decisions about the future of cities. This study therefore examined urban legibility across different residential zones of Ibadan metropolis with a view to providing information that could enhance the livability of the city and others with similar background. A total of 327 residents were selected for the survey using systematic sampling technique. The study revealed that the most predominant urban legibility elements used in navigation in the core and transition zones were areas names while availability of nearby churches was the prominent urban legibility elements in giving/receiving directions in the suburban.             The study revealed that variation existed in the importance residents attached to the various urban legibility elements as well as the effectiveness of these elements across the various residential areas of the metropolis. Furthermore, the study established that locating places in Ibadan in terms of describing and taking description is a challenging task. It recommended that the government should work out modalities to locate all urban legibility elements, enlighten the public on the need to incorporate these elements in order to improve street coordinate system in the study area and also develop and implement existing development plan with the integration of urban legibility elements.

The increase in the growth of cities and the numbers of people moving to cities in the last two decades have led to sharp increase in transportation demand and development of slums and urban sprawl. Cities like Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, Port-Harcourt and Ilorin and other areas in Nigeria are experiencing many pressure on land use such as;, free-space, transportation facilities and a host of urban related problems which urgently deserve planners’ attention. Ilorin is one of the fastest growing cities in Nigeria. The problems of transportation and land use in Ilorin can be summarized into the following: long queue of people daily at ‘bus stops’, the problem of old narrow streets in most of the unplanned areas of the city and the emerging incursion of transport infrastructural facilities into the residential areas. To address these and other urban land-use problems world-wide, various governments have put in place different urban renewal programmes, but in the case of Nigeria little impacts on the city transportation and land-use systems had taken place. This research used exploratory method to justify the essence of planning in transportation system and on land-use in order to enhance and maintain sustainable development. The paper also suggests some measures like; expansion of existing narrow roads and provision of necessary infrastructural facilities, inter modality light rail/tram, creation of modern parks at specified locations as well as enlargement of public and private partnerships-involving the Government, transport associations, financial institutions, the available universities and some other professional bodies to serve as panacea to problems highlighted.

The need to settle is a basic need of people that must be fulfilled. The weakness of law enforcement and public awareness on the spatial planning implicate the emergence of settlement areas in various locations that are less suitable for its allocation. The settlements in Semarang are growing very fast and tending to be unfocused. The increase of built area especially in residential areas indicates reduced of green open space and the catchment area. This phenomenon begins to appear in the outskirts of Semarang. This study aims to examine the development of settlements that occurred during the period of 10 years in the outskirts of the city of Semarang. It includes 10 districts, further, this study used descriptive quantitative and spatial analysis. The results showed that the completeness of the factor is the most influential factor on the development of settlements. Settlements tend to develop regularly with a regular pattern. The residential development areas also occur in the catchment area and in locations that are not suitable for allotment, so that limitation efforts should be made on the development of settlements. There are still some locations that are possible for the construction of settlements in the outskirts of Semarang. The government needs to follow up this issue by providing information to the community, so that the development of settlement is in accordance with the direction of urban development

This study aims to determine the flood discharge plan, discharge the existing channel and analyze the condition of the existing channel and look for alternatives to handling flood inundation at the location of flood inundation. Retrieval of data by measuring the existing channel in the flood inundation location. Calculation of peak discharge uses rational methods for various times of plan return. Rainfall calculation results of the plan that meets the requirements are type 1 Gumbel Method. The results of the research and calculations areknown that the amount of existing channel discharge in seven locations of flood inundation ie left and right Mountain Bambat Road is 0.934 m3 / sec and 3.798 m3 / sec. 2,261 m3 / sec, the left and right Gunung Bungkuk Roads are 0.134 m3 / sec and 0.164 m3 / sec while the flood discharge is 1.897 m3 / sec, Gunung Bungkuk 1 Road is 0.30 m3 / sec while the flood discharge is 0.471 m3 / sec, Gunung Bungkuk Road 4 hunchback of 0.190 m3 / sec while the flooddischarge is 1,336 m3 / sec and Gunung Bungkuk Road is 4 0,173 m3 / sec while the flood discharge is 0,864 m3 / sec and for the drainage of Jalan Gunung Bungkuk is not calculated the channel discharge is due to the channel being closed so that the channel dimension not obtained but for the flood discharge of 2.230 m3 / sec and 0.447 m3 / sec. Thus, it shows that the existing discharge channel on the existing Gunung Bungkuk Hump Mountain Road is unable toaccommodate the planned flood discharge. The alternative to flood inundation is by re-planning drainage channels, channel normalization activities, and improving coordination between the government and the community in maintaining drainage channels.
