Background: This article examines the differences in situational motivation toward fitness testing in physical education classes between non-overweight and overweight students, as well as the mediator effect of objective and perceived physical fitness on the relationship between weight status and motivation toward fitness testing. Methods: A total of 534 adolescents (298 boys, 55.80%) participated in the study. Perceived physical fitness and situational motivation toward fitness testing were measured through questionnaires, whereas weight status and physical fitness were objectively measured. Results: Overweight students had lower intrinsic motivation (p < 0.001), and higher external regulation (p < 0.01) and amotivation (p < 0.05) during fitness testing in a physical education class than their non-overweight peers. The influence of being overweight on motivation regulations toward fitness testing was mediated by objective physical fitness level for intrinsic motivation (B = −0.140), external regulation (B = 0.104) and amotivation (B = 0.146). Perceived physical fitness was also used as a second mediator between weight status and intrinsic motivation (B = −0.117). Conclusions: Strategies to improve objective and perceived physical fitness in overweight students are necessary to increase self-determined motivation during fitness testing in physical education lesson.

The analysis of the «Regulation on the organization of physical education and mass sports in higher educational institutions» indicates that in general, they do not take into account the level of physical fitness of students, the priority of the development of physical qualities and preferences of sports. To solve this scientific problem, we conducted a study in which we assessed the level of physical fitness of students, the priority of physical qualities and interest in sports. What will be possible in the future to more informed and reasonably approach to the choice of methods and forms of conducting classes, sports. It will also provide information on the development of one or another physical qualities. On the basis of analysis of the questionnaire, to determine and scientifically substantiate which physical qualities are more prioritized, according to students, assessment of their own level of physical fitness and preference to sports. To determine the level of physical fitness of students, prioritizing, in their opinion, physical qualities and sports, on the basis of the analysis of the results of the questionnaire. It is established that students' personal fitness level is estimated to be high – 13.1%; the importance of physical qualities: endurance – 41,8%; own level of physical fitness: coordination – 29.35%. Among sports, students prefer the following types: ping-pong – 18,15%; volleyball – 13,5%; football – 12,8%; aerobics – 11.55%; martial arts – 10,05%; swimming – 8,2%; basketball – 6,55%; athletic gymnastics – 5,55%; Athletics – 5,2%; badminton – 3,05%; recreational gymnastics – 3,45%; handball – 1,95%. The results can be used in the formation of sports and recreation groups for sports. After the conducted scientific research, we were able to determine and scientifically substantiate: what physical qualities are more prioritized, according to students; provided an assessment of their own level of physical fitness; and identified the likes of sports.

Basketball is a sport in continuous evolution, being one of these key aspects of the players’ physical fitness that has an impact on the game. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize and identify the physical fitness level and profiles of basketball players according to sex. Total of 26 semi-professional basketball players were assessed (13 male, 13 female) through inertial devices in different previously validated fitness tests. T-test for independent samples and principal component analysis were used to analyze sex-related differences and to identify physical fitness profiles. The results showed differences according to sex in all physical fitness indexes (p < 0.01; d > 1.04) with higher values in males, except in accelerometer load during small-sided games (p = 0.17; d < 0.20). Four principal components were identified in male and female basketball players, being two common ([PC1] aerobic capacity and in-game physical conditioning, [PC4 male, PC3 female] unipodal jump performance) and two different profiles (male: [PC2] bipodal jump capacity and acceleration, [PC3] curvilinear displacement; female: [PC2] bipodal jump capacity and curvilinear displacement, [PC4] deceleration). In conclusion, training design must be different and individualized according to different variables, including physical fitness profiles between them. For practical applications, these results will allow knowing the advantages and weaknesses of each athlete to adapt training tasks and game systems based on the skills and capabilities of the players in basketball.

The aim of this study was to develop and implement curriculum of non-formal physical education in school and assess its effectiveness for health related physical fitness of 11-13 year old children. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage 51 11-13 year old children participated in a quasi-experiment for two years. Pupils were organized into E (experimental) and C (control) groups. Both groups shared the duration (1 hour) and frequency (twice a week) but were different in their education curriculum. In the second stage 72 pupils (groups A and B) attended in the research from the same schools. The curriculum of the group A was modified and differed from group E, group B - the same as group C. In both stages the focus groups performed four physical fitness tests and BMI was calculated. Group E girls’ indices of three tests and boys’ indices of all four tests were significantly (p<0.05) higher than young adolescents’ from group C. Group A girls’ flexibility and aerobic endurance as well as boys aerobic endurance were higher (p < 0.05) than pupils from group B. Results suggest that the individualized, diverse, 11‒13 years old children hobbies, needs, abilities, physical and functional powers answering non-formal curriculum, which expands knowledge and develops new skills and when various child-activating teaching methods and forms are used, positively influence their health related physical fitness.
