DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2016v18n5p520 The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of commuting physical activity and associate sociodemographic, behavioral and health characteristics in longlived older adults of Florianópolis/SC. This cross-sectional epidemiologic study included 343 individuals aged 80 and older; these individuals are members of community groups registered in the municipality of Florianópolis/SC. Sociodemographic information and health and behavior data were collected. To assess physical activity, the “commuting” domain of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used, adapted for older adults. Data were analyzed using Stata 11.0 with Logistic regression expressed in odds ratios and 95% confidence interval. The prevalence of commuting physical activity was 19.5%. The oldest members of the group (p= 0.011; OR= 0.90; 95%CI= 0.83/0.98), with worse health perception (p< 0.001; OR= 0.33, 95%CI= 0.18/0.60) and with hypertension diagnosis (p= 0.009; OR=0.47; 95%CI= 0.27/0.83) had lower odds ratio of commuting physical activity. Knowledge about sociodemographic, behavioral and health characteristics associated with commuting physical activity can serve as a basis for the development of programs and actions to encourage commuting physical activity among long-lived older adults.

Purpose: To explore combinations of worksite supports (WSS) for physical activity (PA) that may assist employees in meeting PA recommendations and to investigate how availability of WSS differs across industries and occupations. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Several Missouri metropolitan areas. Participants: Adults employed >20 h/wk outside the home. Measures: Survey utilized existing self-reported measures (eg, presence of WSS for PA) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Analysis: Logistic regression was conducted for 2 outcome variables: leisure and transportation PA. Independent variables included 16 WSS. Of particular interest were interaction effects between WSS variables. Analyses were stratified by 5 occupation and 7 industry types. Results: Overall, 2013 people completed the survey (46% response rate). Often, availability of 1 WSS did not increase the likelihood of meeting PA recommendations, but several pairs of WSS did. For example, in business occupations, the odds of meeting PA recommendations through transportation PA increased when employees had access to showers and incentives to bike/walk (odds ratio [OR] = 1.6; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.16-2.22); showers and maps (OR = 1.25; 1.02-1.55); maps and incentives to bike/walk (OR = 1.48; 1.04-2.12). Conclusion: Various combinations of WSS may increase the likelihood that employees will meet PA recommendations. Many are of low or no cost, including flexible time for exercise and maps of worksite-adjacent walk/bike routes. Findings may be instructive for employers seeking to improve employee health through worksite PA.

Background:Fatigue is prevalent after myocardial infarction (MI) and is a barrier to physical activity (PA). Because PA is an important health behavior in preventing or delaying recurrent MIs, examining the influence of biophysical markers and fatigue on PA is important as a prerequisite to developing effective interventions. Objective:This study compared PA in 34 men and 38 women, aged 65 and older, 6–8 months post MI, and examined the influence of biophysiological measures and fatigue on PA in this sample. Methods:Using a cross-sectional descriptive correlational design, adults completed a demographic form that included documentation of blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight; the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale (RPFS), and the Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Adults, and blood collection for measurement of hemoglobin (Hgb), interleukin-6, and B-natriuretic peptide. Results:There were no differences in frequency of PA between older men and older women; however, men reported a higher intensity of PA ( p = .011). When controlling for sex, age, and biophysiological measures, the RPFS significantly explained 16% of the variance in the frequency of PA ( p = .03), with no individual subscale serving as a significant predictor. The RPFS behavior/severity subscale explained 31% of the variance in energy expended on all PA ( p < .001) and 40% of the variance in energy expended on moderate-intensity PA ( p < .001).Conclusion:The older adults participating in this study did not participate in the recommended levels of PA, and fatigue significantly influenced PA post MI.

This study aimed to analyze the level of physical activity for people with high blood pressure cared for in a health center. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 310 individuals between 18 and 69 years of age through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The majority (80%) of participants presented low or moderate levels of physical activity. The analysis of association between sociodemographic variables and physical activity level revealed that older men from the interior of the state with higher educational levels have a greater chance of exhibiting lower levels of physical activity. The logistic regression model revealed that origin, schooling and diabetes are predictors of low physical activity level. The conclusion is that part of the sample does not match the desirable profile to practice regular physical activity.

The aim of this paper was to compare the physical activity (PA) levels in physical education (PE) teachers before and during school suspension brought by the COVID-19 quarantine. Thirty-seven PE teachers participated in the descriptive cross-sectional comparative methodological design study. In order to evaluate the PA levels, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was applied. As a statistical method, the equality of variance was calculated using the Student t test for independent samples. The results revealed less total PA MET-minutes/week in PE teachers (p=.005), with a percentage difference of 69.8 Δ%, during the COVID-19 quarantine compared to the state before the COVID-19 pandemic. PE teachers are considered professionals who help public health by reducing sedentary lifestyle in society. In that context, decrement in PA level, i.e., their inactivity determined during the COVID-19 pandemic is unacceptable.
