Cancer is a cataclysmic disease that affects not only the target organ, but also the whole body. Metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) have recently emerged as a better option for the treatment of this deadly disease. Accordingly, the present work describes a means to control the growth of cancer cells by using colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) processed via homemade solutions and the characterization of these materials. The AgNPs may become an instantaneous solution for the treatment of these deadly diseases and to minimize or remove these problems. The AgNPs exhibit excellent control of the growth rate of human liver (HepG2) and breast (MCF-7) cancer cells, even at a very low concentrations. The cytotoxic effects of AgNPs on HepG2 and MCF-7 cancer cells were dose dependent (2–200 μg/mL), as evaluated using MTT and NRU assays. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was increased by 136% and 142% in HepG2 and MCF-7 cells treated with AgNPs, respectively. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) data for both cell types (HepG2 and MCF-7) after exposure to AgNPs showed up- and downregulation of the expression of apoptotic (p53, Bax, caspase-3) and anti-apoptotic (BCl2) genes; moreover, their roles were described. This work shows that NPs were successfully prepared and controlled the growth of both types of cancer cells.

In order to reduce the impact of load and system parameter changes on the dynamic performance of collaborative robot joint module, a novel robust control algorithm is proposed in this paper to solve the problem of dynamic control of collaborative robot joint module trajectory tracking. The controller is composed of two parts: one is a nominal control term designed based on the dynamical model, aiming to stabilize the nominal robot system; the other is a robust control term based on the Lyapunov method, aiming to eliminate the influence of uncertainty on tracking performance, where the uncertainties include nonlinear friction, parameter uncertainty, and external disturbances. The Lyapunov minimax method is adopted to prove that the system is uniformly bounded and uniformly ultimately bounded. We performed numerical simulation and experimental validation based on an actual collaborative robot joint module experimental platform and the rapid controller prototype cSPACE. The numerical simulation and experimental results show that the controller has excellent control performance for the collaborative robot joint module and provides more accurate trajectory tracking under the influence of uncertainties.

Abstract The ability to create metallic patterned nanostructures with excellent control of size, shape and spatial orientation is of utmost importance in the construction of next-generation electronic and optical devices as well as in other applications such as (bio)sensors, reactive surfaces for catalysis, etc. Moreover, development of simple, rapid and low-cost fabrication processes of metallic patterned nanostructures is a challenging issue for the incorporation of such devices in real market applications. In this contribution, a direct-write method that results in highly conducting palladium-based nanopatterned structures without the need of applying subsequent curing processes is presented. Spin-coated films of palladium acetate were irradiated with an electron beam to produce palladium nanodeposits (PdNDs) with controlled size, shape and height. The use of different electron doses was investigated and its influence on the PdNDs features determined, namely: (1) thickness of the deposits, (2) atomic percentage of palladium content, (3) oxidation state of palladium in the deposit, (4) morphology of the sample and grain size of the Pd nanocrystals and (5) resistivity. It has been probed that the use of high electron doses, 30000 μC·cm-2 results in the lowest resistivity reported to date for PdNDs, namely 145.1 μΩ·cm, which is only one order of magnitude higher than metallic palladium. This result paves the way for development of simplified lithography processes of nanostructured deposits avoiding subsequent post-treatment steps.

This chapter describes the development of applying machine learning (ML) to numerous aspects of the additive manufacturing whole chain, counting model design, and quality evaluation. Present challenges in applying machine learning (ML) to additive manufacturing and possible solutions for these problems are then defined. Upcoming trends are planned in order to deliver a general discussion of this additive manufacturing area.

This study investigates the trajectory planning problem for double-pendulum quadrotor transportation systems. The goal is to restrain the hook swing and payload swing while achieving precise positioning. An online trajectory planning method with two capabilities—precise positioning and swing suppression—is proposed. The stability and convergence of the system are proved using the Lyapunov principle and the LaSalle’s invariance theory. Simulation results show that the proposed method has excellent control performance.

Abstract Several chemotherapeutic agents and novel immunotherapies provide excellent control of systemic and central nervous system (CNS) leukemia but can be highly neurotoxic. The manifestations of subacute methotrexate neurotoxicity are diverse and require vigilant management; nonetheless, symptoms are transient in almost all patients. As methotrexate is a crucial drug to prevent CNS relapse, it is important to aim to resume it after full neurologic recovery. Most children tolerate methotrexate rechallenge without significant delays or prophylactic medications. Neurotoxicity is more frequent with newer immunotherapies such as CD19– chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR T) cells and blinatumomab. A uniform grading system for immune effector cell–associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) and algorithms for management based on severity have been developed. Low-grade ICANS usually resolves within a few days with supportive measures, but severe ICANS requires multispecialty care in the intensive care unit for life-threatening seizures and cerebral edema. Pharmacologic interventions include anticonvulsants for seizure control and glucocorticoids to reduce neuroinflammation. Anticytokine therapies targeted to the pathophysiology of ICANS are in development. By using illustrative patient cases, we discuss the management of neurotoxicity from methotrexate, CAR T cells, and blinatumomab in this review.

AbstractThis review examines the preparation of alginate hydrogel microparticles by using droplet-based microfluidics, a technique widely employed for its ease of use and excellent control of physicochemical properties, with narrow size distribution. The gelation of alginate is realized “on-chip” and/or “off-chip”, depending on where cross-linkers are introduced. Various strategies are described and compared. Microparticle properties such as size, shape, concentration, stability and mechanical properties are discussed. Finally, we consider future perspectives for the preparation of hydrogel microparticles and their potential applications.

Modeling and simulation of system design adjustment is respectable training for design and engineering decisions in real world jobs. In this paper, the exact perseverance connected with the strain of components is very important for structural designs, analyses, and for excellent control. The information linked to this type of test is usually related to the exact dimensions connected with the pressure within a flexible region. This paper proposed the design and simulation of a torque sensor with a piezoresistive V-shaped strain gauge. The piezoresistive measure of a precious metal for a stable base was made according to the results of an ANSYS simulation. A torque sensor with a piezoresistive V-shaped tension measure on a base was made. The result of the particular simulation shifted the fraction of tension on the base to enable the torque on the substrate to be measured. Theoretical studies on the piezoresistive measure of a metal for the stable base as well as the torque sensor were introduced. A maximum of 127.29 με and a maximum resistance change in gauge equal to 0.091Ω were achieved for an applied torque of 22.0725 Nm. Here, computer systems modeling and simulation are going to be used.

Abstract Background Patients with tethered cord syndrome often suffer severe spasticity. To the best of our knowledge, intrathecal baclofen (ITB) therapy in a patient with tethered cord syndrome has not been reported previously. We describe a case in which ITB therapy was useful for treating severe spasticity in an adult with tethered cord syndrome. Case presentation We present the case of a 50-year-old Japanese woman with tethered cord syndrome and related conditions suffering from severe spasticity and pain in the lower limbs. She was born with a lumbosacral myelomeningocele, which was closed in the neonatal period. For 4–5 years before this presentation, spasticity in the lower limbs had been exacerbated without any obvious cause. She received rehabilitation and pharmacotherapy from a local doctor, but symptoms were unimproved, and her previous doctor referred her to this department. A test with 50 μg of intrathecally delivered baclofen showed total relief of spasticity and pain, so a pump was implanted for continuous baclofen delivery. During 24 months of follow-up, spasticity has remained under excellent control with baclofen at 38.5–41.0 μg/day. Conclusions ITB therapy proved extremely effective in this adult with severe spasticity from tethered code syndrome.

Tigernut (Cyperus esculentus var. sativus) is a type of sedge that is quickly becoming popular as a superfood. As demand for tigernut continues to increase, more information is needed to develop weed management strategies for the crop to maximize tuber yield and quality. However, no herbicide is currently labeled for use with tigernut. Experimental trials were conducted in 2017 and 2018 to assess crop safety and control of economically important weeds with preemergence herbicides for transplanted ‘NG3’ and ‘OG’ tigernut. Oxyfluorfen applied alone or mixed with pendimethalin provided excellent control (>85%) of smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus), carpetweed (Mollugo verticillata), and large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), and it did not cause any tigernut injury, stunting, or yield reduction compared with the weed-free control. However, none of the treatments controlled hairy galinsoga (Galinsoga quadriradiata) satisfactorily 2 months after herbicide application. Bensulide alone or associated with oxyfluorfen caused 14% to 25% stunting of tigernut. Bensulide alone only provided short-term control of broadleaf weeds. Increased weed competition and tigernut phytotoxicity associated with bensulide resulted in a 39% reduction in tuber yield compared with oxyfluorfen alone. Finally, S-metolachlor caused up to 78% stunting and a 68% reduction in vegetative tigernut biomass (on average) compared with the weed-free control. Tuber yield was reduced 55% to 97% after S-metolachlor was applied at transplanting. Oxyfluorfen would provide effective weed control up to 8 weeks after treatment in fields where hairy galinsoga is not a weed of concern and fulfill the requirement of a weed-free period without affecting tuber yield of quality.
