Abstract The analyze of dynamic of quantity and composition of the Russian catches in the Sea of Azov, Black and Caspian Seas in the 21st century was made. It has been shown that catches decrease with a simultaneous increase in the proportion of marine fish proper. The analyze of aquaculture development in southern regions is provided and also identified the prospects for its development in the near future. Currently, there is a positive dynamics of growth in the production of commercial fish farming products. Since 2000 this parameter has decreased from 77 to 328 thousand tons in 2020. The volume of aquaculture in the southern regions of the country in 2020 amounted to more than 78 thousand tons, which is 24% of the total Russian. In Rostov and Astrakhan region, Krasnodar territory obtained 90.6% aquaculture production. The perspective ways are pasture aquaculture, ponds and industrial fish farming, recreational aquaculture, mariculture. The expansion of the species diversity of farmed fish is possible both due to the aboriginal ichthyofauna and the use of previously acclimatized species.

The article describeы the fishing process as a final technological stage that completes the cycle of fish breeding in the fish ponds. Fishing in the ponds, regardless of their category, is a difficult and energy-intensive process. The safety of farmed fish and the overall results of fish farming depend on the process of fishing. The well-known fishing methods are based on filtering fish when discharging water through fish catchers or other artificial structures. When water is drained from the pond, the fish moves to a fish catcher with the water flow, which contradicts its biological tendency to breast the current and prevents from its getting into the fish catcher or another artificial structure. In addition, the separation of fish from water by a grated water separator leads to the mechanical damage of the fish scales and reduces the number of alive fish. The technology of fish catching in draining ponds used at the small innovative enterprise SRK Sharapovsky (Kamyzyaksky district, Astrakhan region) has been analyzed. The absence of a fish catcher is a specific feature of the technology. Fishing in the ponds is carried out by using a dragnet during the pond drainage, starting the catch when the pond’s area is lowered to 1/3 or 1/4. The disadvantages of this technology include excessive accumulation of fish in a small volume of water, which can cause fish death or severe injuries to the underyearlings reared with commercial fish species. Choosing the optimal fishing gear or a device will allow to clearly plan and coordinate the work of the enterprise, because the fishing period is short and depends on the time frames and the market demands.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the current state of aquaculture development in Russia (using the example of the Central Federal District). Priorities for the development of aquaculture were identified, as well as the main directions for solving the problems posed. These include the development of aquaculture through the introduction of new technologies for growing commercial fish, the most advanced forms of organizing production, the development of domestic fodder production, trout farming and sturgeon farming. The article predicts the development of commercial fish farming in the Central Federal District for 2024, taking into account the proposed changes in the technology of fish farming and the organization of production, based on further cooperation and integration. The accelerated development of aquaculture will ensure the production of high-quality and high-value fish species and create a stable basis for the formation of food security in the country.

Russia, like no other country in the world, has a huge potential for fish-farming development. According to data of different authors, in Russia from 12 to 16 million hectares of water areas of inland water bodies are suitable for fish-farming. Aquaculture farms potential in Russia is estimated at, at least, 2-3 million tons. It should be borne in mind, however, that our statistics do not take into account the so-called micro water bodies with an area of less than 1 hectare. The Department of Economics and Accounting in Agroindustrial Complex of the Irkutsk State Agrarian University in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture of the Irkutsk Region carried out a study of aquaculture production state, identified factors that hampered its development, gave recommendations on use of forms of state support for agricultural aquaculture producers. The article is devoted to the current state and problems of commercial fish-farming development in Russia, including main aquaculture objects cultivated in Russia and its potential species; volume of catching aquatic biological resources and production of aquaculture products in Russia from 2007 to 2016 and main directions of state support for this sector.

One of the main constraints in aquaculture production is farmed fish vulnerability to diseases due to husbandry practices or external factors like pollution, climate changes, or even the alterations in the dynamic of product transactions in this industry. It is though important to better understand and characterize the intervenients in the process of a disease outbreak as these lead to huge economical losses in aquaculture industries. High-throughput technologies like proteomics can be an important characterization tool especially in pathogen identification and the virulence mechanisms related to host-pathogen interactions on disease research and diagnostics that will help to control, prevent, and treat diseases in farmed fish. Proteomics important role is also maximized by its holistic approach to understanding pathogenesis processes and fish responses to external factors like stress or temperature making it one of the most promising tools for fish pathology research.

The present study provides the fundamental results for the treatment of marine organisms with cold atmospheric pressure plasma. In farmed fish, skin lesions may occur as a result of intensive fish farming. Cold atmospheric plasma offers promising medical potential in wound healing processes. Since the underlying plasma-mediated mechanisms at the physical and cellular level are yet to be fully understood, we investigated the sensitivity of three fish cell lines to plasma treatment in comparison with mammalian cells. We varied (I) cell density, (II) culture medium, and (III) pyruvate concentration in the medium as experimental parameters. Depending on the experimental setup, the plasma treatment affected the viability of the different cell lines to varying degrees. We conclude that it is mandatory to use similar cell densities and an identical medium, or at least a medium with identical antioxidant capacity, when studying plasma effects on different cell lines. Altogether, fish cells showed a higher sensitivity towards plasma treatment than mammalian cells in most of our setups. These results should increase the understanding of the future treatment of fish.

The influence of ecological, epizootological and technological factors on fish health was studied. It is shown that disregard of environmental, technological and veterinary-sanitary requirements in the reproduction and cultivation of fish leads to the emergence of contagious and non-contagious diseases and causes significant damage to fish farming. The analysis of previously approved veterinary and sanitary rules, instructions, recommendations for breeding and commercial fish farms, as well as patent documentation and scientific publications in the field of ecological and veterinary research in fish farming is carried out. The possibility of using modern ecological and veterinary-sanitary achievements for the protection of fish health is shown. The complex system of preventive measures (organizational, environmental-technological and veterinary-sanitary), supplemented by modern ecological and veterinary achievements, in its implementation will allow to reduce losses of fish products and increase efficiency of production.

Abstract This case study was prepared as part of an Asian Development Bank (ADB) Special Evaluation Study (SES) on Small-Scale Freshwater Rural Aquaculture Development. In the context of the SES, this case study used primary and secondary data and published information to document the human, social, natural, physical and financial capital available to households involved in the production and consumption of freshwater farmed fish and to identify channels through which the poor are affected. The history, biophysical, socioeconomic and institutional characteristics of Lake Taal, Batangas, Philippines are described, followed by accounts of the technology and management used for tilapia cage farming and nursery operations, with detailed profiles of fish farmers and other beneficiaries. Transforming processes are then discussed with respect to markets, labour, institutions, support services, policy, legal instruments, natural resources and their management and environmental issues. Main outcomes, conclusions and implications for poverty alleviation are then summarized.

Abstract A total of 600 oxbow lakes are located in the southwestern part of Bangladesh, covering 5,488 ha. An oxbow lake (baor) is an old cut-off river bend, usually in the shape of a horseshoe. Pond aquaculture for women was introduced in oxbow lakes in 1995-1996 to allow their active participation in aquaculture as a livelihood activity. The shallow and silted parts of the baor were excavated into 0.5 to 1.5 ha size fishponds. This study was conducted in 1999 in two selected oxbow lakes in Jessore district to assess the technological and socio-economic effects of fish farming groups (FFGs) and pond aquaculture in oxbow lakes with emphasis on the involvement of women. Three categories of questions (socio-economic, technical and gender) were asked of FFG members. This study shows that initially when the women became involved in pond excavation and dike compaction, as members of the FFGs, most of their men members did not like this. As Bangladesh is a Muslim-dominant country, there is a general idea among men that women should not work outside together with men. However, after a few years, once the success of the women's fish farming activities and marketing became clear, their social status and respect in the society and family increased through their active participation in this process. A total of 23 oxbow lakes in five districts around Jessore, covering 1,400 ha, have been handed over from the Ministry of Land to the Department of Fisheries (DOF). Subsequently, the DoF transferred the user-rights to the beneficiaries for a period of 50 years.

A robust body of evidence has demonstrated that the lunar cycle plays an important role in the reproduction of fish living in natural environments. However, little is known about the influence of the moon on tilapia reproductive activity in intensive fish farming systems. This study aims to evaluate the influence of the lunar cycle on the reproductive performance of tilapias in an intensive outdoor tropical production system in Latin America. Records of two tilapia strains (Nile tilapia [ Oreochromis niloticus; n = 75] and Red tilapia [ Oreochromis spp.; n = 1335]) reared in concrete tanks in a commercial fish farm were analyzed. Over a 3-year period, 60,136 captures were made in intervals of 12 to 14 days and 6,600 females were manually spawned. The number of females spawned and the volume of eggs collected from each tank ( n = 9) were recorded. Data was analyzed by the general linear model and means were compared by least squares means method. A very slight or no variation was observed when the lunar cycle was split into two halves (crescent and waning). The proportions of females spawned and the volume of eggs per spawned female and per female in the tank varied considerably across the eight periods of the lunar cycle, with greater values in the waning than in the crescent phase. A significantly greater proportion of tilapia spawned and yielded more eggs around the full moon than around the new moon and remaining days of the lunar cycle. The moon cycle affected the reproductive activity of tilapia, which were more reproductively active around the full moon and most of the waning phase.

The aquaculture sector stands at a crossroad because of the important changes in the business environment. Demand and competition for food is growing worldwide, fishery sector reached its limits and in this regard farmed fish sector represents a viable solution for food supply. A sustainable development of small business is recommended in order to develop knowledge and skills to support the growth of world population. In this view knowledge management for innovation is crucial to promote sustainable business models (BM) that can achieve a solid economic performance and at the same time take care of the natural environment. The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to the literature about sustainable BMs by an in-depth case study of a small fish farming company which developed competitiveness based on own tacit knowledge. The exemplary case study of a sustainable BM in aquaculture has been analyzed by use of an enhanced BM canvas that links various market oriented elements of a BM with the needs of society.
