This paper presents the numerical study on propagative waves in a periodically supported rail below 6000 Hz. A periodic rail model, which considers the effects of both the periodic supports and the rail cross section deformation, has been established based on the periodic structure theory and the finite element method. Two selection approaches are proposed to obtain the concerned dispersion curves from the original calculation results of dispersion relations. The differences between the dispersion curves of different support conditions are studied. The propagative waves corresponding to the dispersion curves are identified by the wave modes. The influences of periodic supports on wave modes in pass bands are revealed. Further, the stop band behaviors are investigated in terms of the bounding frequencies, the standing wave characteristics, and the cross-sectional modes. The results show that eight propagative waves with distinct modes exist in a periodically supported rail below 6000 Hz. The differences between the dispersion curves of periodically and continuously supported rails are not obvious, apart from the stop band behaviors. All the bounding-frequency modes of the stop bands are associated with the standing waves. Two bounding-frequency modes of the same stop band can be regarded as two identical standing waves with the longitudinal translation of the quarter-wavelength, one of which is the so-called pinned-pinned resonance.

The alternating stop-band characteristics of periodic structures have been widely used for narrow band vibration control applications. The objective of this work is to extend this idea for broadband excitations. Toward this end, we seek to synthesize a longitudinal and a flexural periodic structure having the largest fraction of the frequencies falling in the attenuation bands of the structure. Such a periodic structure when subjected to broadband excitation has minimal transmission of the response away from the source of excitation. The unit cell of such a periodic structure is constituted of two distinct regions having different inertial and stiffness properties. We derive guidelines for suitable selection of inertial and stiffness properties of the two regions in the unit cell such that the maximal frequency region corresponds to attenuation bands of the periodic structure. It is found that maximal dissimilarity between the neighboring regions of the unit cell leads to maximal attenuating frequencies. In the extreme case, it is found that more than 98% of the frequencies are blocked. For seismic excitations, it is shown that large, finite periodic structures corresponding to the optimal unit cell derived using the infinite periodic structure theory has significant vibration isolation benefits in comparison to a homogeneous structure or an arbitrarily chosen periodic structure.

Microfluidic devices which integrate both rapid mixing and liquid jetting for sample delivery are an emerging solution for studying molecular dynamics via X-ray diffraction. Here we use finite element modelling to investigate the efficiency and time-resolution achievable using microfluidic mixers within the parameter range required for producing stable liquid jets. Three-dimensional simulations, validated by experimental data, are used to determine the velocity and concentration distribution within these devices. The results show that by adopting a serpentine geometry, it is possible to induce chaotic mixing, which effectively reduces the time required to achieve a homogeneous mixture for sample delivery. Further, we investigate the effect of flow rate and the mixer microchannel size on the mixing efficiency and minimum time required for complete mixing of the two solutions whilst maintaining a stable jet. In general, we find that the smaller the cross-sectional area of the mixer microchannel, the shorter the time needed to achieve homogeneous mixing for a given flow rate. The results of these simulations will form the basis for optimised designs enabling the study of molecular dynamics occurring on millisecond timescales using integrated mix-and-inject microfluidic devices.

AbstractThe present numerical study is to understand the effect of air tabs located at the exit of a convergent nozzle on the spreading and mixing characteristics of correctly expanded sonic primary jet. Air tabs used in this study are two secondary jets issuing from constant diameter tubes located diametrically opposite at the periphery of the primary nozzle exit, normal to the primary jet. Two air tabs of Mach numbers 1.0 to 1.4, in steps of 0.1 are considered in this study. The mixing modification caused by air tabs are analysed by considering the mixing of uncontrolled (free) primary jet as a reference. Substantial enhancement in jet mixing is achieved with Mach 1.4 air tabs, which results in 80 % potential core length reduction. The total pressure profiles taken on the plane (YZ) normal to the primary jet axis, at various locations along the primary jet centreline revealed the modification of the jet cross sectional shape by air tabs. The stream-wise vortices and bifurcation of the primary jet caused by air tabs are found to be the mechanism behind the enhanced jet mixing.

A numerical study of non-linear, high amplitude standing waves in non-cylindrical circular resonators is reported here. These waves are shock-less and can generate peak acoustic overpressures that can exceed the ambient pressure by three/four times its nominal value. A high fidelity compressible computational fluid dynamic model is used to simulate the phenomena in cylindrical and arbitrarily shaped axisymmetric resonators. A right circular cylinder and frustum of cone are the two geometries studied. The model is validated using past numerical and experimental results of standing waves in cylindrical resonators. The non-linear nature of the harmonic response of the frustum of cone resonator system is investigated for two different working fluids (carbon dioxide and argon) operating at various values of piston amplitude. The high amplitude non-linear oscillations demonstrated can be used as a prime mover in a variety of applications including thermoacoustic cryocooling.

In ballasted concrete tie track, the tie-ballast interface can deteriorate resulting in concrete tie bottom abrasion, ballast pulverization and/or voids in tie-ballast interfaces. Tie-ballast voids toward tie ends can lead to unfavorable center binding support conditions that can result in premature concrete tie failure and possible train derailment. Direct detection of these conditions is difficult. There is a strong interest in assessing the concrete tie-ballast interface conditions indirectly using measured vertical deflections. This paper seeks to establish a link between the vertical deflection profile of a concrete tie top surface and the tie-ballast interface condition using the finite element analysis (FEA) method. The concrete tie is modeled as a concrete matrix embedded with prestressing steel strands or wires. The configurations of two commonly used concrete ties, one with 8 prestressing strands and the other with 20 prestressing wires, are employed in this study. All models are three-dimensional and symmetric about the tie center. A damaged plasticity model that can predict onset and propagation of tensile cracks is applied to the concrete material. The steel-concrete interface is homogenized and represented with a thin layer of cohesive elements sandwiched between steel and concrete elements. Strand- or wire-specific elasto-plastic bond models developed at the Volpe Center are applied to the cohesive elements to account for the interface bonding mechanisms. FE models are developed for both original and worn concrete ties, with the latter assuming hypothetical patterns of reduced cross sections resulting from abrasive interactions with the ballast. Static analyses of pretension release in these concrete ties are conducted, and vertical deflection gradients along tie lengths are calculated and shown to correspond well with the worn cross sectional patterns for a given reinforcement type. The ballast is further modeled with Extended Drucker-Prager plasticity, and hypothetical voids are applied toward the tie ends along the concrete tie-ballast interface to simulate center binding support conditions. The distance range over which the concrete tie is supported in the center is variable and yields different center binding severity. Static simulations are completed with vertical rail seat loads applied on the concrete tie-ballast assembly. The influences of various factors on the vertical deflection profile, including tie type, vertical load magnitude, center binding severity, cross sectional material loss and prestress loss, are examined based on the FEA results. The work presented in this paper demonstrates the potential of using the vertical deflection profile of concrete tie top surfaces to assess deteriorations in the tie-ballast interface. The simulation results further help to clarify minimum technical requirements on inspection technologies that measure concrete tie vertical deflection profiles.

Flow boiling through microchannels is characterized by nucleation of vapor bubbles on the channel walls and their rapid growth as they fill the entire channel cross-section. In parallel microchannels connected through a common header, formation of vapor bubbles often results in flow maldistribution that leads to reversed flow in certain channels. The reversed flow is detrimental to the heat transfer and leads to early CHF condition. One way of eliminating the reversed flow is to incorporate flow restrictions at the channel inlet. In the present numerical study, a nucleating vapor bubble placed near the restricted end of a microchannel is numerically simulated. The complete Navier-Stokes equations along with continuity and energy equations are solved using the SIMPLER method. The liquid-vapor interface is captured using the level set technique. The results show that with no restriction the bubble moves towards the nearest channel outlet, whereas in the presence of a restriction, the bubble moves towards the distant but unrestricted end. It is proposed that channels with increasing cross-sectional area may be used to promote unidirectional growth of the vapor plugs and prevent reversed flow.

Исследование направлено на разработку и апробацию методики численного моделирования аэродинамических и энергетических характеристик циклоидального ротора. За основу взята конфигурация ротора IAT21 L3. Для нее с использованием CFD-пакета ANSYS Fluent построена математическая модель и выполнен расчет. Проанализировано влияние скорости набегающего потока воздуха на движущийся ротор. Математическая модель и полученные результаты исследования могут быть использованы при создании летательных аппаратов с движителями роторного типа. This article addresses the study of the aerodynamic and energy characteristics of a cycloidal rotor subject to the influence of the incoming flow. Cycloidal rotor is one of the perspective devices that provide movement of aircrafts. Despite the fact that the concept of a cycloidal rotor arose in the early twentieth century, the model of a full-scale aircraft has not been yet realized. Foreign scientists have developed models of aircraft ranging in weight from 0.06 to 100 kg. The method of numerical calculation of the cycloidal rotor from the article [1] is considered and realized in this study. The purpose of study was the development and testing of a numerical simulation method for the cycloidal rotor and study aerodynamic and energy characteristics of the rotor in the hovering mode and under the influence of the oncoming flow. The aerodynamic and energy characteristics of the cycloidal rotor, rotating at a speed of 1000 rpm with incoming flow on it with velocities of 20-80 km/h, were calculated. The calculation results showed a directly proportional increase of thrust with an increase of the incoming on the rotor flow velocity, but the power consumed by the rotor was also increased. Increase of the incoming flow velocity leads to the proportional increasing of the lift coefficient and the coefficient of drag. Up to a speed of 80 km/h, an increase in thrust and power is observed; at higher speeds, there is a predominance of nonstationary effects and difficulties in estimating the aerodynamic characteristics of the rotor. In the future, it is planned to consider the 3D formulation of the problem combined with possibility of the flow coming from other sides.

Abstract This study analyzes the combustion performance of a syngas-fueled homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine using a toroidal piston, square bowl, and flat piston shape, at low, medium, and high loads, with a constant compression ratio of 17.1. In this study, the square bowl shape is optimized by reducing the piston bowl depth and squish area ratio (squish area/cylinder cross-sectional area) from (34 to 20, 10, and 2.5) %, and compared with the flat piston shape and toroidal piston shape. This HCCI engine operates under an overly lean air–fuel mixture condition for power plant usage. ANSYS Forte CFD with GRI Mech3.0 chemical kinetics is used for combustion analysis, and the calculated results are validated by the experimental results. All simulations are accomplished at maximum brake torque (MBT) by altering the air–fuel mixture temperature at IVC with a constant equivalence ratio of 0.27. This study reveals that the main factors that affect the start of combustion , maximum pressure rise rate (MPRR), combustion efficiency, and thermal efficiency by changing the piston shape are the squish flow and reverse squish flow effects. Therefore, the square bowl piston D is the optimized piston shape that offers low MPRR and high combustion performance for the syngas-fueled HCCI engine, due to the weak squish flow and low heat loss rate through the combustion chamber wall, respectively, compared to the other piston shapes of square bowl piston A, B, and C, flat piston, and toroidal (baseline) piston shape.

In recent years, Higher Order Modes Cluster (HOMC) guided waves have been considered for ultrasonic testing of plates and pipes. HOMC guided waves consist of higher order Lamb wave modes that travel together as a single nondispersive wave packet. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of frequency-thickness value on the contribution of Lamb wave modes in an HOMC guided wave. This is an important issue that has not been thoroughly investigated before. The contribution of each Lamb wave mode in an HOMC guided wave is studied by using a two-dimensional finite element model. The level of contribution of various Lamb wave modes to the wave cluster is verified by using a 2D FFT analysis. The results show that by increasing the frequency-thickness value, the order of contributing modes in the HOMC wave packet increases. The number of modes that comprise a cluster also increases up to a specific frequency-thickness value and then it starts to decrease. Plotting of the cross-sectional displacement patterns along the HOMC guided wave paths confirms the shifting of dominant modes from lower to higher order modes with increase of frequency-thickness value. Experimental measurements conducted on a mild steel plate are used to verify the finite element simulations. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with simulations and confirm the changes observed in the level of contribution of Lamb wave modes in a wave cluster by changing the frequency-thickness value.

The cross-section area of straight fin is often considered to be equal in the thermal analyses of straight fin, but sometimes it is unequalin actual situation. Taking a straight fin with two unequal cross-sectional areas as an example,an analytical method of heat conduction for unequal section straight fin is presented. The analytical expressions of temperature field and heat dissipating capacity about the fin,which has a smaller cross-section area near the fin base and a larger one, is obtained respectively. The calculation results of the unequal cross-section are fully consistent with the equal area one, so the method is proved right. The results show that the larger the cross section areanear the base,the better is the heat transfer, and the temperature at the base with larger cross-section area is lower than that with smaller cross-section area when the amount of heat is fixed.
