The lack of participation of men in family planning programs is due to the limited choice of male contraceptive. Traditional medicinal plants are one of ideal alternative types of male contraception. This study aimed to study the effect of Cyperus rotundus L. rhizome on the quality and quantity of spermatozoa in male mice (Mus musculus L.). Twenty male mice were divided into four treatment groups, namely control group (C0), the dose of teki grass rhizome extract 4.5 mg/40 g BW (C1), the dose of teki grass rhizome extract 45 mg/40 g BW (C2), and the dose of teki grass rhizome extract 135 mg/40 g BW (C3) for 35 days. Parameters measured were the motility, viability, morphology, and concentration of spermatozoa. The data were analyzed for diversity and then further tested using the LSD test with a 5% significance level. The results of the analysis showed that giving teki grass rhizome extract had a significant effect on the motility, viability, morphology, and concentration of spermatozoa. It can be concluded that teki grass rhizome can be used as an alternative male contraception because it can reduce motility, viability, morphology, and spermatozoa concentration.

Smoking is one of the habits that can affect human health. One type of cigarette that is currently the choice is electric cigarettes. The e-cigarette content includes nicotine, propylene glycol, flavorings and glycerin. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of exposure to e-cigarette smoke on mice strain balb / c with the parameters of the number of spermatozoa. This study used 15 male mice which were 8-10 weeks old and weighed 25-30 grams of male mice which were divided into 3 treatment groups namely control group, treatment group one and treatment group two. In the control group no exposure to cigarette smoke was carried out while in the treatment group one was exposed to cigarette smoke in mice with a dose of 0 mg nicotine and the second treatment group was exposed to e-cigarette smoke at a dose of 18 mg nicotine. Electric cigarette smoke exposure is carried out for 30 days using a suction device from a syringe. The exposure of cigarette smoke is carried out every day with successive doses of 20 times as much as 3 times with a time lag of 10 minutes (5 minutes the chamber is closed and 5 minutes of the chamber is opened). The results showed that the average number of spermatozoa in the control group was 16.816 million / ml. The average number of spermatozoa in treatment one was 10.432 million / ml and the average number of spermatozoa in treatment two was 5.234 million / ml. This shows that exposure to cigarette smoke can reduce the number of spermatozoa from the control group to the first treatment by 42.56% and the second treatment shows a decrease from the first group by 34.65%.

Background. Population growth needs to be controlled so as not to cause new and serious problems. Pregnancy and birth control is a solution to control this sizable population growth. Contraception is a way to prevent pregnancy, by inhibiting the process of ovulation, fertilization and implantation. Nevertheless, most of contraceptive regiments were aimed to woman. Male contraception nowadays is very rare. Papaya seed is one of the male contraceptive candidates which has the potential to be developed as male contraception. Previous studies have shown the potential of papaya seed extract could reduce the weight of reproductive organs of male white rats, where it was believed that there was a decrease in spermatogenesis activity. Methods. This research was an in-vivo experimental research post-test only with control group. The study used 32 male and healthy rats (Rattus norvegicus) Wistar strain with 8-10 weeks of age. Rats were grouped into 1 control group and 4 treatment groups that were randomly selected. The four treatment groups were group 1: control administered 1% 2ml CMC orally one time per day every morning, group 2: were given N-hexane papaya seed fraction, group 3: were given ethyl acetate papaya seed fraction and group 4: were given ethanol-water papaya seed fraction. The three fractions were given to rats orally at a dose of 100 mg / KgBB / day for 24 days. After that, rat's testes and epidydimis were evacuated to observe reproductive organs and sperm quality. Results. Anatomically, Group 2 and 3 were statistically significant in reducing testicular's and epidydimis' weight compared to the control group, but the n-hexane group was more effective in reducing testicular weight than other treatment groups. Furthermore, groups 2, 3 and 4 were statistically significant in reducing  sperm quality (motility, viability, amount of sperm cells and normal sperm cell morphology)  compared to the control group, but the n-hexane group was more effective in reducing sperm quality than other treatment groups. Conclusion. Papaya seed n-hexane fraction has potential as a male contraceptive by reducing spermatogenesis activity and decreasing sperm quality in white rats.   Excessive continuous noises exposure changes the male hormone system which leads to formation of oxidative stress and results in disrupt of semen quality. This condition can be reduced by the use of antioxidants. Grape seed is one of the antioxidants that contains phenol components that have Resveratrol compounds. This research aimed to observe the effect of noise exposure on the number of spermatozoa of male mice given grape seed extract. The method of the research was a post-test only control group design with research subjects of 30 male Mus musculus L. (Swiss Webster) mice divided into 5 groups: group A (treatment control) was not given noise exposure and grape seed extract, group B (negative control) was not given noise exposure and was given grape seed extract, groups C, D, E (treatment group) were given noise exposure with sequential intensities of 65 dB, 85 dB, 105 dB. The treatment was given for 33 days. The results showed that noise exposure with different intensities of 65 dB, 85 dB, 105 dB reduced the spermatozoa count of male Swiss Webster mice even with the administration of grape seed extract. One Way Anova test was used to analyze the data with p-value of 0.001. Conclusion: There were differences in spermatozoa count between the control group and the treatment group. Provision of noise exposure with a value above the threshold limit reduces the number of male Swiss Webster mice spermatozoa given with grape seed extract.
