Abstract Since ancient times, sheep`s milk cheeses have been a part of a human diet. Currently, their consumption is of great interest due to its nutritional and health values. The aim of the article was to review the chemical composition of sheep’s milk cheeses and its main bioactive ingredients in the context of nutritional and health values. Sheep’s milk cheeses are rich in functionally and physiologically active compounds such as: vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, terpenes, sialic acid, orotic acid and L-carnitine, which are largely originate from milk. Fermentation and maturation process additionally enrich them in other bioactive substances as: bioactive peptides, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) or biogenic amines. Studies show that sheep’s milk cheese consumption may be helpful in the prevention of civilization diseases, i.e. hypertension, obesity or cancer. However, due to the presence of biogenic amines, people with metabolic disorders should be careful of their intake.

Diabetes is one of the most dangerous metabolic disorders, with high rates of mortality worldwide. Since ancient times, medicinal plants have been used in traditional medicine to treat many diseases, including diabetes and its related complications. Plants are widely accepted, affordable, and perceived to have minimal adverse side effects. The Lamiaceae family is a potential source of therapeutic agents for the management of metabolic disorders, including diabetes. Hence, this review paper summarizes the antidiabetic use of Lamiaceae species in folk medicine globally. Furthermore, we present the antidiabetic activities and phytochemical constituents of twenty-three (23) Lamiaceae species and the antidiabetic activity of some notable chemical constituents isolated from some of these Lamiaceae species.

Bee products have been used since ancient times both for their nutritional value and for a broad spectrum of therapeutic purposes. They are deemed to be a potential source of natural antioxidants that can counteract the effects of oxidative stress underlying the pathogenesis of many diseases. In view of the growing interest in using bioactive substances from natural sources to promote health and reduce the risk of developing certain illnesses, this review aims to update the current state of knowledge on the antioxidant capacity of bee products such as honey, pollen, propolis, beeswax, royal jelly and bee venom, and on the analytical methods used. The complex, variable composition of these products and the multitude of analytical methods used to study their antioxidant activities are responsible for the wide range of results reported by a plethora of available studies. This suggests the need to establish standardized methods to more efficiently evaluate the intrinsic antioxidant characteristics of these products and make the data obtained more comparable.

Seaweeds are one of the ancient food supplements on Earth. Especially Asian countries use seaweeds as the fundamental ingredient in their cuisine. Seaweeds are photosynthetic organisms living in aquatic ecosystems and in the coastal territories. Seaweeds out of farm areas are frequently observed as coastal wastes. However, seaweeds are outstanding sources for bioactive substances and investigation bioactive properties of seaweed RuBisCO has never been done. RuBisCO is the most abundant protein on Earth but a vast amount of RuBisCO goes through waste. In this study, bioactive peptide prediction of frequently consumed seaweed RuBisCO proteins were analyzed in silico to identify possible bioactive peptides as substitute or support for grain, meat, and dairy based bioactive peptides. A huge portion of peptides were di-, tri- peptides with IC50 values less than 300 µM according to the comparison of BIOPEP database. Including gastric digestion, more than half of the peptides showed DDP-IV and ACE inhibitory activity followed by antioxidant properties. Also, novel antiinflammatory and anti-cancer peptides were found through in silico analysis.

Lentils have been part of human diet from ancient times. This chapter focuses on the nutritional composition, presence of bioactive substances, antioxidants and health rendering properties of lentils. Recent definitions have considered lentils as a prophylactic and therapeutic functional food due to its considerable content of essential macronutrients, namely functional proteins and carbohydrates, and essential micronutrients, as well as bioactive phytochemicals such as phytates and polyphenols. Indeed, the presence of an impressive arsenal of secondary metabolites, minerals and bioactive constituents in lentils have shown to be promising contributors in the management and prevention of several human chronic diseases, attributed to their anticarcinogenic, hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic and blood-pressure lowering properties.

Correlated histochemical, immunocytochemical, and electrophysiological experiments have been undertaken to identify putative neurotransmitter–neuromodulator substances in cells and fibers in the parasympathetic cardiac ganglion of the mudpuppy, Necturus maculosus, and to determine the action of these agents on the properties of the parasympathetic postganglionic neurons. The mudpuppy cardiac ganglion contains two neuron types: large parasympathetic postganglionic neurons and smaller intrinsic neurons initially identified as small intensely fluorescent cells. We have shown that the postganglionic neurons contain both acetylcholine and a galanin-like neuropeptide. Also, we have demonstrated that the intrinsic neurons contain a number of different biogenic amines such as dopamine and serotonin, as well as neuropeptides including a substance P-like peptide and a galanin-like peptide. The results of these studies indicate that the anatomical and histochemical organization of the mudpuppy cardiac ganglion is more complex than that seen in other amphibians and is very similar to that found in most mammalian species. Previously, we showed that galanin has actions that make it of interest as a potential inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mudpuppy cardiac ganglion. Galanin hyperpolarizes and decreases membrane excitability in most parasympathetic neurons. Here we show that galanin initiates membrane hyperpolarization by activating a voltage- and time-dependent potassium conductance. We also present the initial results of ongoing studies which indicate that calcitonin gene-related peptide can depolarize some of the parasympathetic neurons as well as evidence that serotonin initiates depolarization in many parasympathetic neurons. This serotonin-induced depolarization consists of an initial transient depolarization followed by a longer, more slowly developing depolarization. Action potential activity is stimulated during the initial period of depolarization, but depressed during the later, slow depolarization. The results of these electrophysiological experiments suggest that many of the bioactive substances that have been identified in the different cells and nerve fibers within the cardiac ganglion affect the excitability of the postganglionic neurons. In conclusion, we suggest that the results of the studies summarized in this review demonstrate that the cardiac ganglion in the mudpuppy is not simply a relay station. Rather, the cardiac ganglion has a complex organization and exhibits a diversity of physiological responses, indicating that it very likely is another site of integration for control of cardiac function.Key words: parasympathetic neurons, cardiac ganglion, neuropeptides, biogenic amines, galanin, serotonin.

Intracellular glucose and lipid metabolic homeostasis is vital for maintaining basic life activities of a cell or an organism. Glucose and lipid metabolic disorders are closely related with the occurrence and progression of diabetes, obesity, hepatic steatosis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), one of the most abundant polyphenol compounds in the human diet, is a group of phenolic secondary metabolites produced by certain plant species and is an important component of coffee. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that CGA exerts many biological properties, including antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticarcinogenic activities. Recently, the roles and applications of CGA, particularly in relation to glucose and lipid metabolism, have been highlighted. This review addresses current studies investigating the roles of CGA in glucose and lipid metabolism.

ABSTRAK Gout adalah keadaan penumpukan kristal yang berasal dari gangguan metabolisme asam urat di dalam sendi, jaringan periartikular, tulang dan organ lainnya. Pasien yang menderita gout akan memiliki resiko dari kardiovaskular yang sangat tinggi, sehingga perlu strategi pencegahan yang optimal. Prevalensi asam urat di Indonesia terjadi pada usia di bawah 34 tahun yaitu sebesar 32%. Sejak zaman dahulu masyarakat Indonesia mengenal dan menggunakan tanaman berkhasiat obat sebagai salah satu upaya menanggulangi berbagai masalah kesehatan. Review bertujuan untuk membahas tanaman yang terkait dengan gout yang digunakan untuk mengurangi dan mencegah terjadinya gout berdasarkan literatur. Pada review artikel ini digunakan literatur online dan offline. Literatur online didapat dari jurnal publikasi lokal maupun internasional yang diperoleh dari penyedia jurnal di internet. Literatur offline yang digunakan yaitu buku dan e-book. Gout dapat diatasi dengan bahan alam yaitu Sirsak (Annonna muricata Linn.), Mahkota Dewa (Phaleria macrocarpa), Suruhan (Peperomia pellucida), Kulit Manggis (Garcinia mangostana L.) Daun Tempuyung (Sonchus arvensis) dan Daun Salam (Syzygium polyanthum). Kata Kunci : Asam urat, bahan alam, gout, tanaman ABSTRACT Gout is a state of buildup of crystals derived from metabolic disorders of uric acid in joints, periarticular tissues, bones and other organs. Patients suffering from gout will have a very high cardiovascular risk, so an optimal prevention strategy is needed. The prevalence of uric acid in Indonesia occurs at age below 34 years that is equal to 32%. Since ancient times the people of Indonesia know and use medicinal plants as one of the efforts to overcome various health problems. Review aims to discuss gout-related plants used to reduce and prevent the occurrence of gout based on literature. In this article review used the online and offline literature. Online literature is obtained from local and international publication journals obtained from journal providers on the internet. The offline literature used is books and e-books. Gout can be overcome with natural ingredients namely Soursop (Annonna muricata Linn.), Mahkota Dewa (Phaleria macrocarpa), Suruhan (Peperomia pellucida), Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) Bioactive peptides (BPs) are fragments of 2–15 amino acid residues with biological properties. Dietary BPs derived from milk, egg, fish, soybean, corn, rice, quinoa, wheat, oat, potato, common bean, spirulina, and mussel are reported to possess beneficial effects on redox balance and metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)). Peptide length, sequence, and composition significantly affected the bioactive properties of dietary BPs. Numerous studies have demonstrated that various dietary protein-derived BPs exhibited biological activities through the modulation of various molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways, including Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/antioxidant response element in oxidative stress; peroxisome proliferator-activated-γ, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-α, and sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 in obesity; insulin receptor substrate-1/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B and AMP-activated protein kinase in diabetes; angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition in hypertension; and mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-kappa B in IBD. This review focuses on the action of molecular mechanisms of dietary BPs and provides novel insights in the maintenance of redox balance and metabolic diseases of human.
