The present study intends to investigate the use of substitution in students’ expository texts. It covers the types of substitution used by the students in their expository texts and the contribution of substitution to the texts’ cohesion. This study uses qualitative research through case study design. The participants in this study are nine students of twelfth grade in a public senior high school in Kuningan. The data in the present study are the documents of students’ expository texts. The data are analyzed by using the frameworks of cohesive devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The findings indicate that there is only one substitution found in this study namely nominal substitution. The present study also delineates that the use of substitution contributes to the process of avoiding repetition and text redundancy. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the use and the contribution of substitution in students’ expository texts are still considered low. Thus, the encouragement is very necessary for the students to use appropriate substitution to make their texts more cohesive.

This study aims to find out the phenomenon of Indonesian language in learners, how the views of reconstructionism and the role of communicative methods in developing language skills in learners. The research method that I use is qualitative research method. Descriptive qualitative research method is done by technique. The results of this study, namely learners are still difficult to use the Indonesian language is good and true in the formal situation. This can not be separated from the acquisition and learning of language obtained by previous learners. Based on the theory of reconstructionism and communicative methods, learners can acquire and use a language well if the language is often used or communicative. This implies that a person can build the language skills of the experiences he / she obtains, meaning that learners should often experience or use the language. The role of the communicative method itself, which is to improve or develop the language skills of learners. The role of schools and teachers is to encourage children to use these languages by creating specific situations (communicative situations) so that the language skills of learners develop well, be it Indonesian-speaking or foreign languages.

This chapter focuses on collective case study: (1) what it is, (2) what separates it from other case study formats (case study and multiple case study), and (3) how to effectively use collective case study design for research. This chapter walks researchers through the overarching components necessary in conducting research using collective case study design, providing helpful strategies and examples the authors have found useful in their own research. While highly useful in qualitative research, this chapter also notes possible challenges to using collective case study design. This chapter concludes with a list of additional resources for more in-depth explorations of the procedural elements addressed.
