Purpose The purpose of this paper is to unearth the factors inhibiting the development of zakat (the Islamic obligatory alms) and waqf (endowment) institutions in Northern Nigeria, with the aim of proffering appropriate solutions. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a qualitative research methodology whereby data was sourced from relevant stakeholders in Northern Nigeria. To select the appropriate interviewees, maximum variation and homogenous purposeful sampling techniques were used. Findings The findings of the paper show that zakat and waqf institutions in Northern Nigeria have not achieved their inherent Sharīʿah objectives because members of the public have little or no trust or confidence in the institutions. Also, the potential zakat payers and waqf donors dislike political office holders’ involvement in the appointment of the institutions’ administrators. Finally, the administrators lack adequate managerial and administrative knowledge of the two institutions. Research limitations/implications The current research focusses on causes of low performance of zakat and waqf institutions solely in Northern Nigeria. It is envisaged that subsequent researchers may conduct research on the possibility of having a federal law that will strengthen the overall establishment and development of zakat and waqf in Nigeria. This will affect both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority communities. Originality/value This paper represents a referenceable work in the field of zakat and waqf in Northern Nigeria, as it uses an approach that sources primary data in the form of participants’ point of view instead of relying on literature or document analysis. It is not a mere theoretical study of the literature but an empirical investigation of the problem.

Because of the energy crisis and the low proportion of new buildings in Taiwan, rational use of electricity in existing buildings becomes very important for reducing carbon emissions and combating global climate change. The retrofitting of lighting systems is one of the most widely adopted energy saving measures. This study presents the potential energy saving and payback period of lighting system retrofit through replacing low performance T8 fluorescents with T5 fluorescents and LED indicator lights in the Green Building Renovation Plan. Based on the analysis, this study concludes that lighting system retrofit can achieve significant energy saving ratios of 10-17.5% in daily use. However, the average payback periods of GBRP investment and normal purchase investment are ten years and 7.82 years, respectively. Both exceed the average lifetime of lighting equipment, suggesting that lighting system retrofit is slightly uneconomical because of the low electricity tariff in Taiwan.

In the current world, poverty and education are interconnected. Low level of education is the cause of poverty, as extreme forms of poverty do not allow many children to get a good education. This study investigates the risk factors that significantly increase the likelihood of pupils dropping out of school in Khartoum, Sudan. To accomplish the research, two factors are selected, namely absenteeism and low performance of pupils from poor, disadvantaged communities. A comprehensive interviewing is used to collect the necessary primary data along with the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) data. The life of pupils is characterised by multi-dimensional poverty apace with illiteracy, displacement and large family size, parents' engagement in low paid jobs. The pupils presented multiple reasons (related to poverty) for their absenteeism and low performance. The results indicate that pupils are not clear with their future perspectives whether to drop out of the school or to continue their studies. The study concludes that poverty is the main reason for absenteeism and low performance that increases the likelihood of pupils dropping out of school.
