Three grades of deformed steel bar are presently available in Nepal for concrete reinforcement. The deformed bars are graded according to their specified yield strength. These are Fe415, Fe500 and Fe500D. CTD bars of grade more than Fe415 are scarcely available in market. However, TMT bars of Fe500 grade are easily available in market. This study is undertaken to evaluate the variability of the mechanical properties of reinforcing steel granted with NS Mark and to analyze the degree to which these rolling mills satisfy the minimum requirements established by product national standard NS:191. The data obtained from test results are statistically analyzed to evaluate the variability in the mechanical properties of TMT bars. For the tested mechanical properties, the parameters evaluated for each bar size, and grade at confidence level at 95 % are mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, minimum, maximum, skewness. The samples were collected from NBSM reference sample store room of FY 2073-74 and FY 2074-75. These samples were from nineteen industries and twenty-two different brands. Total 745 numbers of TMT bars of grade Fe500 and Fe500D were tested at NBSM mechanical testing laboratory. The mechanical properties determined from the tested samples are: mass per meter run, yield stress, tensile stress, percentage elongation, UTS/YS ratio, total elongation at maximum force, and bond value.The tested data and obtained statistics of different mechanical properties for the separate and combined data takes on an important practical significance and may be used in calibrating local specifications and designs.

In the context of obtaining an excellent elongation and tensile-strength combination in the third generation of advanced high strength steel, we emphasized the practical significance of adjusting the retained austenite fraction and stability in medium-Mn steel to obtain better mechanical properties. A novel cyclic quenching and austenite reverse transformation (CQ-ART) was used to obtain a large retained austenite content in Fe-0.25C-3.98Mn-1.22Al-0.20Si-0.19Mo-0.03Nb (wt.%) Nb–Mo micro-alloyed medium-Mn steel. The results show that after twice cyclic quenching and ART, the alloy exhibited optimum comprehensive properties, characterized by an ultimate tensile strength of 838 MPa, a total elongation of 90.8%, a product of strength and elongation of 76.1 GPa%, and the volume fraction of austenite of approximately 62 vol.%. The stability of retained austenite was significantly improved with the increasing of the number of cyclic quenching. Moreover, the effects of CQ-ART on the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, C/Mn partitioning behavior, and austenite stability were investigated. Further, the strengthening effect of microalloying elements Nb–Mo was also discussed.

This study was designed to explore the relationship between sunlight exposure and the mechanical properties of paragliding fabrics which have different colors, densities, yarn counts, and coating materials. This study exposed 5 different colors of paragliding fabrics (red, turquoise, dark blue, orange, and white) to intense sunlight for 150 hours during the summer from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for 5 days a week for 5 weeks. Before and after the UV radiation aging process, the air permeability, tensile strength, tear strength, and bursting strength tests were performed. Test results were also evaluated using statistical methods. According to the results, the fading of the turquoise fabric was found to be the highest among the studied fabrics. It was determined that there is a significant decrease in the mechanical properties of the fabrics after sunlight exposure. After aging, the fabrics become considerably weaker in the case of mechanical properties due to the degradation in both the dyestuff and macromolecular structure of the fiber

Study of rheological properties of concrete mixtures based on modified cement systems in order to determine process parameters. Methodology. To study structural-mechanical properties of modified concrete mixtures of different consistency at their horizontal vibrating displacement an oscillatory viscometer was designed. Results. The optimization of the process of vibration displacement of concrete mixtures with the specification of parameters of vibration impacts taking into account structural-mechanical properties of the mixture is performed. It has been established that the viscosity of the modified cement system of the concrete mixture is a variable quantity, which depends on the parameters of the vibration impacts. Scientific novelty. The mechanism of interaction of the modified concrete mixture with the form and the table vibrator during its vibration compaction is determined. On the basis of this, a model of concrete laying process control is proposed, that allows to predict the ability to form a dense concrete structure. Practical significance. Disclosed physical nature of the process of vibrating displacement of modified concrete mixtures using the principles of physical-chemical mechanics of concrete allows reasonably choose the best options for vibration impacts.

AbstractIn this paper, a simple and practitioners-friendly calibration strategy to consistently link target panel-scale mechanical properties (that can be found in national standards) to model material-scale mechanical properties is presented. Simple masonry panel geometries, with various boundary conditions, are utilized to test numerical models and calibrate their mechanical properties. The calibration is successfully conducted through five different numerical models (most of them available in commercial software packages) suitable for nonlinear modelling of masonry structures, using nonlinear static analyses. Firstly, the panel stiffness calibration is performed, focusing the attention to the shear stiffness. Secondly, the panel strength calibration is conducted for several axial load ratios by attempts using as reference the target panel strength deduced by well-known analytical strength criteria. The results in terms of panel strength for the five different models show that this calibration strategy appears effective in obtaining model properties coherent with Italian National Standard and Eurocode. Open issues remain for the calibration of the post-peak response of masonry panels, which still appears highly conventional in the standards.

The paper makes an analysis of the reinforced concrete beams with exterior FRP Shell in Finite Element, and compares it with the test results. The results show that, by means of this model, mechanical properties of reinforced concrete beams with exterior FRP shell can be predicted better. However, the larger the load, the larger deviation between calculated values and test values. Hence, if more accurate calculation is required, issues of contact interface between the reinforced concrete beams and the FRP shell should be taken into consideration.

The strength of abrasive wheels is one of the key factors affecting the performance of abrasive machining. The paper discusses ways to improve the strength of abrasive wheels. The stress-state mathematical model presented herein is a generalization of the existing models. It is used herein to find for the first time that there are numerous optimal combinations of the elastic modulus and reinforcing material density, which result in the same minimum value of the objective function. It is found out that increasing the radius of the reinforcing component while also optimizing the mechanical properties of its material may increase the permissible breaking speed of the wheel several times. We herein present a regression equation and a nomogram for finding the optimal combination of control factors. Conventional methods for testing the mechanical properties of materials, which have been proven reliable for testing metals and alloys, are not as reliable for testing abrasive materials, as the test results they generate are not sufficiently stable or accurate. We therefore propose an alternative method that does not require any special equipment or special studies.

The effect of the presence of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and silane-treated alumina trihydrate (ATH-sil) nanofillers on the mechanical, thermal, and flame retardancy properties of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer/low-density polyethylene (LDPE) blends was investigated. Different weight percentages of HNT and ATH-sil nanoparticles, as well as the hybrid system of those nanofillers, were melt mixed with the polymer blend (reference sample) using a twin-screw extruder. The morphology of the nanoparticles and polymer compositions was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The mechanical properties, hardness, water absorption, and melt flow index (MFI) of the compositions were assessed. The tensile strength increases as a function of the amount of HNT nanofiller; however, the elongation at break decreases. In the case of the hybrid system of nanofillers, the compositions showed superior mechanical properties. The thermal properties of the reference sample and those of the corresponding sample with nanofiller blends were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Two peaks were observed in the melting and crystallization temperatures. This shows that the EVA/LDPE is an immiscible polymer blend. The thermal stability of the blends was improved by the presence of HNTs and ATH-sil nanoparticles. Thermal degradation temperatures were shifted to higher values by the presence of hybrid nanofillers. Finally, the flammability of the compositions was assessed. Flammability as reflected by the limiting oxygen index (OI) was increased by the presence of HNT and ATH-sil nanofiller and a hybrid system of the nanoparticles.

The present investigation is on the effect of red mud on the mechanical properties and durability of the geopolymer paste in sulphuric and acetic acid solution. Red mud and fly ash were used to form the geopolymer paste along with the alkalies. The variation of red mud in the paste composition was from 0% to 90%. Cylindrical shaped specimens of 1 inch diameter and 1 inch height were prepared. The specimens were immersed in 5% sulphuric acid and 5% acetic acid for 1, 7, 14, 28, 56 and 84 days and tested for weight loss, visual deformation, strength loss and colour of the solvent, based on the procedure specified by ASTM C 267 – 01. SEM/EDX Tests were performed on the geopolymer specimens. Test results show that initially, the strength of the geopolymer increased upon the addition of red mud. The strength was maximum when the percentage of red mud was 30%. The maximum strength obtained was 38 MPa for the paste containing 30% red mud using 10M alkali solution as against 31.69 MPa, when only fly ash was used. Geopolymer paste containing 30% and 50% red mud showed better resistance to acid attack. The strength loss was minimum for the samples containing 30% red mud in both inorganic and organic acid i.e. sulphuric and acetic acid.

Additive Layer Fabrication, in particular Electron Beam Additive Fabrication (EBAF), has recently drawn much attention for its special usability to fabricate intricately designed parts as a whole. It not only increases the production rate which reduces the production lead time but also reduces the cost by minimizing the amount of waste material to a great extent. Ti6Al4V is the most common type of material that is currently being fabricated using EBAF technique. This material has been used in aerospace industry for several reasons such as excellent mechanical properties, low density, great resistance to corrosion, and non-magnetism. The effects of build direction of layers (namely, addition of layers along one of the x, y & z directions with respect to the build table) and the anisotropy effect caused by it has not been explored vigorously. This anisotropy effect has been investigated in this work. Different mechanical properties such as Yield Strength (YS), Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), and Modulus of Elasticity (E) of these three types of Ti6Al4V are determined using tensile tests and are compared with literature. The tensile test results show that YS and UTS for flat-build samples have distinguishably higher values than those of the side-build and top-build samples.

By the experimental studying on the basic mechanical properties of recycled concrete hollow block masonry, the compressive and shear behavior of recycled aggregate concrete hollow block masonry under different mortar strength were analyzed. Research indicated that the compressive and shear behavior of recycled aggregate concrete hollow block masonry was similar to that of ordinary concrete hollow block masonry. The normal formula was recommended to calculate the compressive strength of the masonry. The shear strength of the masonry was affected by the mortar strength. The shear strength calculation formula of recycled concrete hollow block masonry was proposed according to the formula of masonry design code. The calculating results were in good agreement with the test results.
