The purpose of the article is to identify the historical processes that led to increased attention to the study of church singing in the second half of the nineteenth century and the analysis of methodological support for the training of future choristers of churches in parish schools. The methodological basis of the research is formed by general historical methods (analysis and synthesis), as well as the principles of scientificity, historicism, and objectivity. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that on the basis of the analysed publications of the church press and the available research of modern authors, for the first time, the recommendations that were provided to singing teachers for the preparation of future choristers are highlighted. The teaching aids and some methodological recomndations that were provided to facilitate the learning of students are indicated. Conclusions. In the ХІХ century, a number of reforms were carried out in all eparchies of the Russian Empire, concerning various spheres of spiritual education. There was a reorganization of educational institutions and an update of educational programs. The church singing became one of the main subjects; it was introduced for compulsory study in educational institutions of all levels – from academies to parish schools. Pupils of theological educational institutions mastered its theory and practice at the divine services. The Holy Synod issued provisions that regulated the volume of educational material and even a list of chants and prayers. In addition, church singing could be studied not for one semester or a year, but for the entire period of study. The main aspect requiring improvement in the reform process is the creation of church choirs. Since most of the teachers had a low level of solfeggio knowledge, they are not able to teach singers – teaching aids and methodological recommendations were developed to solve this problem. The useful information for singing teachers was distributed for giving the lesson: easy ways to study musical notation, elementary musical theory, examples of melodies, and so on. Their popularization was carried out with the help of church publications. The article analyses publications of the church press of the ХІХ century, as well as modern researches, which contains information on teaching church singing and advice for teachers who train children-choristers.

The author considers the issue of employment of graduates of various educational institutions to places of ministry on the example of the Tobolsk diocese - one of the most extensive in the Russian Empire. Information presented in tabular form indicates the necessary level of education required for specific positions. On the basis of a wide range of sources, the procedure for documenting applications from students of seminaries and religious schools for their placement in the church of the Tobolsk diocese is considered. Analysis of archival materials suggests the presence in the second half of the 18th - early 20th centuries an established set of documents required for assigning graduates from various educational institutions to places of ministry. As a result of studying the documents of the Tobolsk Theological Consistory on the admission to the service, the composition of the documentation for the reception of church ministers and clergy was determined. Historically, the issues of documenting labor relations have not been practically studied. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that the Tobolsk Theological Consistory has not yet studied the issue of documentation on the recruitment of graduates of religious schools: it is the first time it is disclosed by the author in a documentary-educational way on the basis of the involved archival sources.

The phenomenon of religious pluralism is a fact that needs no further discussion. How society and institutions are negotiating its impact, however, certainly needs further scrutiny. Schreiter's call for the construction of local theologies invites us to explore how the preaching of the Gospel has to adapt to the realities of new situations. The present article focuses on Catholic educational institutions and how they are dealing with the multi-cultural and multi-religious communities that are now found not only outside of the schools and universities but also within them as well. Its concern is with how the identity and mission of these Catholic institutions are expressed and measured in the new contexts, taking seriously the teachings of the Church on the role they play in its evangelizing mission.

The article examines the contribution of the representatives of the Samarin family to the development of the Parish issue in the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The issue of expanding the rights of the laity in the sphere of parish self-government was one of the most debated problems of Church life in that period. The public discussion was initiated by D.F. Samarin (1827-1901). He formulated the “social concept” of the parish and parish reform, based on Slavophile views on society and the Church. In the beginning of the twentieth century his eldest son F.D. Samarin who was a member of the Special Council on the development the Orthodox parish project in 1907, and as such developed the Slavophile concept of the parish. In 1915, A.D. Samarin, who took up the position of the Chief Procurator of the Most Holy Synod, tried to make his contribution to the cause of the parish reforms, but he failed to do so due to his resignation.

The article is devoted to the content, General principles of construction and characteristic features of the calendar, or mesyatseslov, of the Russian Orthodox Church. The author uses methods of analysis and synthesis. As a result, the following generalizations are made. The mesyatseslov was brought to Russia from Byzantium in a fairly complete form, but in the course of historical development it was supplemented with special Russian holidays. The calendar-mesyatseslov is a grandiose council of saints who have labored in different places over the centuries, the unity of the Church of Heaven and earth, the history of holiness and the history of our Church. Liturgical texts composed by hymnographers, which are sung and read in churches, are dedicated to the mesyatseslovs memory. Traditionally, the day of the death of saints, the memory of the discovery of the relics of saints, the transfer of their Holy relics, or the day of the canonization of saints, less often - the day of their birth are honored. Russian people’s phenological observations are related to their daily activities and are linked to mesyatseslov, which indicates its penetration into the daily life of the Russian people.

The article brings up an obscure episode in the rivalry of the Orthodox and Melkite communities in Syria in the late 19th century. In order to strengthen their superiority over the Orthodox, the Uniates attempted to seize the church of St. George in Izraa, one of the oldest Christian temples in the region. To the Orthodox community it presented a threat coming from a wealthier enemy backed up by the See of Rome and the French embassy. The only ally the Antioch Patriarchate could lean on for support in the fight for its identity was the Russian Empire, a traditional protector of the Orthodox Arabs in the Middle East. The documents from the Foreign Affairs Archive of the Russian Empire, introduced to the scientific usage for the first time, present a unique opportunity to delve into the history of this conflict involving the higher officials of the Ottoman Empire as well as the Russian embassy in ConstantinopleВ статье рассматривается малоизвестный эпизод соперничества православной и Мелкитской общин в Сирии в конце XIX века.

The article is devoted to the organization and activities of the Central Snitch Squad at the Saint-Petersburg Security Department for ensuring the security of the head of state in the Russian Empire. The normative basis for the activities of agents of the Central Snitch Squad and the specifics of implementation of their job descriptions are described in the article. The Central Snitch Squad was a separate division of the Search and Surveillance Service of the Russian Empire, which solved the various and most complex tasks of search-and-surveillance. The Central Snitch Squad operated until the fall of the monarchy in February 1917, but the experience gained by it in fulfilling tasks of national importance continues to be used in modern Russia. At the same time, the issues of the organization and functioning of the Central Snitch Squad have not received a comprehensive analysis yet. One of the activities of the Central Snitch Squad, which has not received proper coverage in historical and legal literature, is the protection of imperial majesties in the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. Therefore, its regulation and implementation has become the subject of this article. The main and integrating method of research on the organization and activities of the Central Snitch Squad was the method of materialist dialectics. General logical (deduction, induction, analysis and synthesis), general scientific (systemic, structural-functional, typologization) and special (formal-legal, historical-legal, comparative-legal, interpretations of regulatory legal acts, sociological and statistical) methods of legal research were used. It was concluded that the protection of imperial majesties and the highest persons in the Russian Empire was one of the most important areas of activity of the gendarmerie. The simultaneous existence of three different divisions that guarded the emperor ‒ the Central Snitch Squad, the Security Unit and the Security Agency led to duplication of agents activities and inconsistent actions of the units. The Central Snitch Squad of the Saint-Petersburg Security Department has accumulated a variety of search-and-surveillance experience that can be used to solve problems of national importance in modern Russia.

В XVIII в. The Russ has always been supporting the relationship with the Orthodox Church of the East. As a result of these connections, we have a lot of icons and other gifts from The Mount Athos, The Saint Catherine’s Monastery and others holy places. There are five Greek engravings in the collection of The Museum of Church Archaeology at the Moscow Theological Academy, which have inscriptions in Greek and Slavic. These engravings were to be spread in Slavic countries. They are dated from the 17th to the 19th century. Some of them were made in Moscow. The images and the inscriptions of the engravings are the subject of a research presented in this article.
