This combined extract is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of psychiatric disorder. This study investigated the effect of combined crude extracts of Costus afer, Culcasia scaden and Sarcocephalus latifolius on neurobehaviour and histology of the temporal lobe. The extract was prepared by mixing equal portions of the three extracts and dosage calculated base on the body weight of the animals. Twenty rats were divided into four groups (n=5) such as A, B, C and D. A served as negative control and was given distilled water. The D group served as positive control and received 2.5mg/kg of Diazepam, while B and C served as the experimental group and received 100mg/kg and 150mg/kg respectively for 14 days. The behavioural assay was carried out using elevated plus maze. The animals were sacrificed and the brains removed and processed using normal histological techniques. The result of the behavioural test showed an increase in close arm entry but when compared to the negative control the extract treated groups made more open arm entry and spent more time in the open arm (open arm activity) but less when compared to positive control (Diazepam). This is a measure of anxiolytic activities of the extract. Therefore the extract possesses anxiolytic property. The extract distorted the histoarchitecture of the temporal lobe showing extensive loss of brain tissues, sparsely dispersed cells, and focal loss of brain tissues at doses of 100mg/kg and 150mg/kg respectively. The extracts conclusively possess the potential to modify neurobehaviour and alter the histology of the temporal lobe.

Two trials were conducted on floor pens to evaluate the performance of broilers fed with diets contained different carbohydrases enzyme programs at different ages. Trial 1- The body weight gain (BWG) was affected by the Negative Control (NC) treatment (P<0.05). However, when the birds were fed with the NC diet + Amilase (AMY)+Xilanase (XYL), the BWG improved and reached the same level as the Positive Control (PC). Trial 2- The birds received enzymes supplementation in the total phase and others only in the grower phase. The ME reduction by 120 kcal/kg increased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P<0.05) when compared to PC and none of the enzyme programs was able to recover the performance. It can be concluded that it is possible to supplement with AMY during the role period of broiler chicken life or use an enzymatic program with AMY or AMY+XYL only in the grower phase.

The inflammatory response is one of natural process in the body to protect itself following tissue injury, but it can cause discomfort. Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) leaf known as a traditional medicament to help reduce the inflammatory effect. The leaves empirically applied as a wrapping on fever or wound. The purpose of this study was to identify the anti-inflammatory effect of topical noni leaf extract paste in 5% and 10% concentration by examination of Wistar rat paw edema induced by λ-carrageenan. Twenty-four Wistar rats divided into four groups, which were negative control, positive control with diclofenac sodium 1% gel, 5% noni leaf, and 10% noni leaf paste groups. Paw edema was induced by intraplantar injection of 1% λ-carrageenan to every rat. Every treatment subsequently applied in the plantar area before injection, and the changed paw volume measured with plethysmometer at minutes 0, 30, 60, and 90. This study was at the Animal Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani, Cimahi city in October–December 2017. The result displayed that the minimum volume after 90 minutes was on 5% and 10% noni leaf paste group, which is 1.00 mL. Kruskal-Wallis test result of inflammatory percentage was significantly different among every group in each examination time (p<0.05). Post-hoc test showed that inflammatory reduction on paw edema with noni leaf paste application on both concentrations were significantly different compared to the negative control. However, it was not different from the positive control group. This study showed that application of noni leaf paste in 5% and 10% concentration could help reduce inflammatory response on skin possibly by the active anti-inflammatory ingredients of noni leaf.

Membranes that aid the guided bone regeneration (GBR) process have been the subject of studies of compatible biomaterials that contribute to this repair process. The present study compared different membranes used in critical-size defects of rat calvaria by assessing GBR as well as histological, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical reactions. Forty-eight male albino Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 12 each), namely, C: membrane-free control group (only blood clot, negative control group); BG: porcine collagen membrane group (Bio-Gide®, positive control group); GD: bovine cortical membrane group (first experimental group); and GDF: thicker bovine cortical membrane group (second experimental group). Rats were euthanized at 30 and 60 days postoperatively. Quantitative data from the histometric analysis were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s posttest when p<0.05. Histomorphometric results of the thicker bovine cortical membrane at 30 and 60 days were promising, showing improved new bone formation values (p<0.05), and the CD group presented similar results in both analysis periods, being surpassed only by the GDF group (p<0.05). The immunohistochemical results were associated with the histomorphometric data. A less-thick membrane also assisted in GBR. All membranes promoted GBR, especially the positive control and experimental groups.
