The livestock business is a business consisting of fattening and breeding. Cows are one of the food producers that have a lot of value and nutrition. The high economic value is in line with the increase in population, and the need for food consumption in Indonesia continues to increase every year. Therefore, we must be able to cope with the increasing demand for meat. One of these needs is raising cattle or animal feed and understanding the livestock supply chain as seen from the decline in livestock and feed prices in the market. Knowledge of supply chain flow and beef cattle marketing efficiency is an alternative solution to ongoing problems. The research location is in Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, considering that Percut Sei Tuan District is one of the sub-districts that runs a beef cattle business. This study aims to see how the efficiency of beef cattle marketing. The method used is measuring marketing efficiency and looking at the farmer's share in the beef cattle supply chain. From the study results, it was found that the marketing efficiency analysis of each of the beef cattle supply chain actors in this study has reached a high level of efficiency starting from suppliers, farmer groups and retailers.

The fermentation of leaf vegetable waste to produce animal feed reduces the environmental impact of vegetable production and transforms leaf vegetable waste into a commodity. We investigated the effect of exogenous probiotics and lignocellulose enzymes on the quality and microbial community of fermented feed (FF) produced from cabbage waste. The addition of exogenous probiotics resulted in increased crude protein (CP) content (p < 0.05), better odor (moderate organic acid and ethanol, with low ammonia-N, p < 0.05), and a lower relative abundance (RA) of pathogens (below 0.4%, p < 0.05) in FF, compared to without. With the addition of exogenous probiotics, only Pediococcus and Saccharomyces were enriched and symbiotic in FF; these were the keystone taxa to reduce the abundance of aerobic, form-biofilms, and pathogenic microorganisms, resulting in an efficient anaerobic fermentation system characterized by facultative anaerobic and Gram-positive bacterial communities, and undefined saprotroph fungal communities. Thus, inoculation of vegetable waste fermentation with exogenous probiotics is a promising strategy to enhance the biotransformation of vegetable waste into animal feed.

Beef cattle manures have been converted to a water slurry and subjected to centrifugation, flocculution and drying to produce a silage replacement product (CI), a 20% protein powder from the centrifuge supernatant fluid (CII) and a soil amendment product (CIII). These products and the manure slurry were analyzed for their As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn content by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Different sample mineralization techniques, metal recovery efficiencies and matrix effects were investigated. Metal concentrations increased in the products in the order of silage replacement, protein and soil amendment. Except for a high iron concentration, the silage replacement product (CI) had concentrations of these metals comparable to those for typical feedlot rations, and metal concentration in the protein fraction (CII) was three to six times higher as compared to the range of metal levels in CI; the soil amendment product (CIII) showed metal concentrations comparable to reported manure values. The effects of these metal concentrations on utility of the silage replacement and protein products as feed ingredients for animal feed rations is discussed.

This research aims to identify isolate as a probiotic candidate derived from liquor rumen of local beef cattle  and to know the ability of isolates as biofermentor on basal feed to the changes in the nutrient value. The selected samples were obtained from a slaughterhouse in Surabaya.  This study consisted of two stages.  The first stage was the identification of bacteria through the test of morphology, Gram staining, biochemical, resistance to acidity and 16S rDNA sequencing. The second stage was a test of the ability of the isolates on the nutrient of basal feeds by fermentation for three days in an aerobic condition. Based on the findings of the first phase, it has been identified that probiotic bacterium rods, motility positive, Gram-negative, have viability at pH 2 and pH 3 for 90 minutes and 24 hours and have the ability to ferment lactose, sucrose, galactose, ribose, cellobiose and xylose. Furthermore, based on test results of 16S rDNA sequencing, the probiotic bacterium was identified as Bacillus cereus WPL 415. Based on the research results at the second stage, Bacillus cereus WPL 415 at doses of 0.25% and 0.5% could improve the nutrient content of the basal feed. The results of the proximate analysis revealed that there was an increase in crude protein content of 6.78% until 8.12% compared to the control and was able to lower the crude fiber content of 15.19% and 17.40% compared to the control. Based on these results it can be concluded that Bacillus cereus WPL 415 from local beef cattle can be used as a probiotic candidates to improve the quality of animal feed. Keywords: Bacillus cereus, probiotic, crude protein, crude fiber

Genetic improvement of livestock productivity can be done through molecular selection on the genes controlling growth traits. Genetic polymorphism of the growth family (GH, GHRH, and PIT1) genes were studied in local swamp buffalo (106 hds.) from a government buffalo breeding station (46 heads) and smallholders (60 heads) in North Tapanuli District, North Sumatra Province. Genotype variants of the three genes were identified by PCR-RFLP method using restriction enzymes of MspI (GH gene), HaeIII (GHRH gene) and HinfI (PIT -1 gene). Genotyping on individual GH_g.1547T>C, GHRH_g.4666G>C, and PIT -1_g.1256G >A loci resulted only one type genotype, respectively TT, CC, an d AA, with one type of allele, respectively T, C, and A. Heterozygosity observation (Ho) and expectation (He) values values and the PIC value for each locus was 0.00. It could be suggested to increase genotype frequenciest of the three growth genes that are positively associated with the growth traits and economic traits of the buffalo.
