Discoloration of teeth can be caused by stains on the surface of the teeth or due to changes in tooth material. Tooth stain can be extrinsic, intrinsic, or age-related. Tooth whitening (bleaching) can be done in the office and at home. Strawberry is a fruit with many benefits, one of which is whitening teeth. The content of malic acid and ellagic acid in strawberries has the effect of tooth whitening. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of strawberry extract with a concentration of 100% in cleaning teeth with the extrinsic stain on an academic member of the Health Polytechnic Jakarta I. This study was an experiment on 31 people who had upper and lower anterior teeth with the extrinsic stain as samples. Data collection was done by applying strawberry extract with a concentration of 100% on the surface of the anterior teeth, allowed to stand for 5 minutes, then brushed and rinsed with water. This procedure was done 2 times a day for 5 consecutive days. Changes in extrinsic stain were measured using the Lobene Stain Index which measures the intensity and area of the stain, as well as a combined score of both. The average combined score with measurements using the Lobene Stain Index for extrinsic stain before being treated with strawberries was 22.4. The score has decreased every day starting from day 1 to day 5 of treatment. The largest decrease of the average Combined Score was occurred on the 2nd day, namely from a score of 20.0 on the 1st day to 14.6 on the 2nd day with a percentage reduction of 35.0%. Statistical tests showed significant results of 0,000 reducing the Intensity Score and Area Score on day 2 to day 5. It can be concluded that there was a significant decrease in extrinsic stain scores after treatment on day 2. Keywords: extrinsic stain; strawberry extract

The interaction between pedestrians and left-turning vehicles at signalized intersections are examined using the traffic conflict technique. Paramount was a comparison of the safety of left turns at two types intersections: T-intersections and X-intersections (cross-intersections). Previous research has indicated that T-intersections are more dangerous to pedestrians. In preparation for the comparison several traffic conflict definitions and their applications to pedestrians were evaluated. Use of a laptop computer for data collection was tested. Eight sites taken from intersections in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, were selected. A conflict recording methodology was developed for T-intersections and X-intersections that consisted of recording data at various times along the paths of pedestrians and left-turning vehicles, and recording traffic conflicts. Two computer programs were written for the data collection process: one for vehicles and one for pedestrians. Several statistical tests to relate traffic conflicts and the expected number of accidents were performed. These tests indicate that a positive correlation between traffic conflicts and expected number of accidents exists; they also suggest that T-intersections have a higher traffic conflict rate than X-intersections.

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of strawberry extract with100%, 75%, 50% and 25% concentration in cleaning the extrinsic stain on the teeth. The sample of the study was 32 permanent anterior teeth that were already extracted, consisting of each 16 maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth and all samples have an extrinsic stain. The samples were randomly divided into 4 groups, each group consisting of 8 teeth was treated by applying the strawberry extract with the concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%. After 5 minutes, the teeth were rinsed and dried. The study was conducted in vitro for five consecutive days with twice treatment daily. Intensity Score and Extension Score of the stain were measured using the Lobene Stain Index. All samples experienced a decrease in both the Intensity and Extension Scores, the largest decrease in Intensity and Extension Score were obtained from strawberry extracts with concentration of 100%. The significant decrease in the Intensity Score occurs on the third day and continues until the fourth and fifth days, while the significant decrease in the Extention Score occurs on the fourth day and continues until the fifth day. The four group of the strawberry extract concentrations gave a decrease in the score, which distinguishes the treatment frequency. The higher the concentration, the frequency would be less in lowering stain score, whereas at low concentration the decrease of score require more frequency. Abstract Background Despite widespread acceptance that neuroinflammation contributes to age-related cognitive decline, studies comparing protein expression of cytokines in the young versus old brains are surprisingly limited in terms of the number of cytokines and brain regions studied. Complicating matters, discrepancies abound—particularly for interleukin 6 (IL-6)—possibly due to differences in sex, species/strain, and/or the brain regions studied. Methods As such, we clarified how cytokine expression changes with age by using a Bioplex and Western blot to measure multiple cytokines across several brain regions of both sexes, using 2 mouse strains bred in-house as well as rats obtained from NIA. Parametric and nonparametric statistical tests were used as appropriate. Results In the ventral hippocampus of C57BL/6J mice, we found age-related increases in IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-6, IL-9, IL-10, IL-12p40, IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-17, eotaxin, G-CSF, interfeuron δ, KC, MIP-1a, MIP-1b, rantes, and TNFα that are generally more pronounced in females, but no age-related change in IL-5, MCP-1, or GM-CSF. We also find aging is uniquely associated with the emergence of a module (a.k.a. network) of 11 strongly intercorrelated cytokines, as well as an age-related shift from glycosylated to unglycosylated isoforms of IL-10 and IL-1β in the ventral hippocampus. Interestingly, age-related increases in extra-hippocampal cytokine expression are more discreet, with the prefrontal cortex, striatum, and cerebellum of male and female C57BL/6J mice demonstrating robust age-related increase in IL-6 expression but not IL-1β. Importantly, we found this widespread age-related increase in IL-6 also occurs in BALB/cJ mice and Brown Norway rats, demonstrating conservation across species and rearing environments. Conclusions Thus, age-related increases in cytokines are more pronounced in the hippocampus compared to other brain regions and can be more pronounced in females versus males depending on the brain region, genetic background, and cytokine examined.
