It has never been more important to develop professionalism in the forecasting, measurement and evaluation of event and tourism impacts. While there has been widespread acceptance of the sustainability paradigm and principles of social responsibility, combined with serious public debate about the costs and benefits of events, venues and tourism, the problems seem to keep getting worse. The impacts of events and tourism have been studied extensively, yet evaluation and impact assessment have not been given the same attention, so theory and methods are relatively undeveloped (Brown et al., 2015). Hence the need for this book and its companion Event Evaluation. There are generic principles and established methods available to guide professionals in Impact Assessment (IA) and evaluation, but in the realm of events and tourism we often witness poor methods and a deliberate lack of comprehensiveness, transparency and accountability for both political and selfish reasons. As an introduction to some of the important issues, consider these scenarios relating to events and event tourism. There are four major types of IA discussed in this book and these scenarios introduce them.

This paper aims at analyzing current situation in Entikong as a border region of Indonesia-Malaysia. Economically, this region is dominated by agricultural sectors and mostly harvested valuable commodities were traded in border by farmers from Entikong. This study employed a phenomenological qualitative approach for describing problems faced by farmers and the efforts related to farmers’ household empowerment for improving their quality of life. The data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation, and it was analyzed by using the steps of verification and triangulation, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that main problems are related to the insufficiency of socio-economic infrastructures for improving value added for agricultural products, such as the limitation of roads infrastructure and far distance of market make farmers unwilling to sell their harvested products because of high distribution expenses. Farmers empowerment done by government and NGO were directed to improve their knowledge and skills related to plantation and agricultural activities. Moreover, it needs socio-economic institutional strengthening and participation from farmers’ community as well.

Aim of the study focused on evaluation of SUBSTOR – Potato model and its utilization in potato grows management in the Czech Republic. The experimental field used for the model evaluation was located in Žabčice – South Moravia region with altitudes of 179 meters above the sea level. Tuber yield served as reference for the model evaluation. Nine years experimental data set (1994–2002) was used for the model validation. Rosara cultivar represented very early growing potato, Karin cultivar depicted early growing potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in the experiment. Comparison between observed and simulated tuber yields presented the evaluation process of SUBSTOR – Potato model. Tuber yields simulated by the model showed excellent accuracy (R2 = 0.97) for Rosara cultivar, but only for four of tested years (1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002). Karin cultivar matched lower value (R2 = 0.43). The model tended to underestimate the tuber yield for non seasonable conditions (i.e. dry years – low amount of precipitation and its disordered distribution during the growing season or higher mean air temperature) and showed the sensitivity to selected cultivars. Study proved SUBSTOR – Potato model as suitable for utilization in potato management; however, potential differences might be expected while using the model under extreme weather conditions.
