Can economic ties positively influence social relations and actions? If so, how does this influence operate? Microfinance programs, which provide credit through a group-based lending strategy, provide the ideal setting for exploring these questions. This article examines whether structuring socially isolated women into peer-groups for an explicitly economic purpose, such as access to credit, has any effect on the women's collective social behavior. Based on interviews with 400 women from 59 microfinance groups in West Bengal, India, I find that one third of these groups undertook various collective actions. Improvements in women's social capital and normative influence fostered this capacity for collective action. Several factors contributed to these transformations, including economic ties among members, the structure of the group network, and women's participation in group meetings. Based on these findings, I argue that microfinance groups have the potential to promote women's social capital and normative influence, thereby facilitating women's collective empowerment. I conclude by discussing the need for refining our understanding of social capital and social ties that promote normative influence.

AbstractSocial capital generated by frequent, face-to-face interactions provides the foundation for collective action. Does this also hold for a community action in post-communist, Central European countries where modern NGOs are perceived to be ineffective? This article examines this question in the context of the cleanup of illegal dumpsites organized by a Slovenian NGO, Ecologists without Borders, in 2010. This community cleanup effort sought to produce local public goods such as improved aesthetics, sanitation, and ground water quality. Local participation levels (percentage of adults contributing to the cleanup effort) varied across 192 districts of Slovenia. Analyzing an original, micro-level dataset, this article finds that, all else equal, social capitals rooted in frequent face-to-face interactions (the common Catholic religion and membership in Hunters clubs) are associated with increased participation levels. However, social capital generated via common native language does not show statistical association with participation levels.

This present study explores the practices of teaching and learning Arabic among Muslim minorities by using the approach of modernity principles. A qualitative descriptive approach was designed in this research. It was conducted in West Papua, which covered five regencies and one city. The findings demonstrate that the instruction served in a number of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in Mayamuk, Aimas, Waisai, Teminabuan, Kaimana, Waigom, and Misol was carried out in a structured manner. In these seven locations, Islamic education that adopted a language skill-based instructional framework was presented by applying a communicative approach among santri (pesantren students). The language component fostered among santri was Arabic expressions without any special emphasis on the mastery of grammar. The pesantren atmosphere equipped with a boarding school for santri as a place to stay facilitated interactions among them as well as the instructors to practice their language skills. The skills were situated in the learning context and the accompanying environment. The existing social aspects were then used to mediate the teaching and learning process. The study also reveals that the variety of learning objectives determining the aspects of the approach and methodology affects Arabic instruction in the pesantren settings. It implies that not only does pesantren internalize a religious spirit, but it also promotes Indonesia based on the spirit of nationalism.
