Introduction. Sunscreen is an important method of sun protection. Many studies were conducted worldwide on the use of sunscreen but only few done in Saudi Arabia. The aim of our study is to assess the prevalence, practices, and factors associated with sunscreen use among Saudi university students. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A questionnaire on the use of sunscreen was created in English. Quota sampling technique was used since the sample was divided according to gender and college year. Results. A total of 1,011 students were enrolled. Approximately half were males (n = 510). Half of the students used sunscreen (n = 515, 51%). Female gender, high family income, previous history of sunburn, tanning bed use, and use of other sun protection methods were factors independently associated with sunscreen use. The main reasons for using sunscreen were prevention of sunburns, dark spots, skin cancer, and overall skin darkening. Eighty percent of participants used other methods of sun protection. Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) > 30 was used in 59% of students. However, the majority did not know if the sunscreen they use provided broad-spectrum coverage or not. Only 35% of students apply sunscreen in both sunny and cloudy days. Most students apply sunscreen less than 10 minutes before going out and do not repeat the application throughout the day. More than 90% of students seem to apply insufficient amount of sunscreen. Conclusion. Almost half of the population in the study use sunscreen. We have identified several areas of improper use of sunscreen. Increasing the awareness of effective sunscreen use in our community might be needed.

Background: Children are considered to be the backbone of any nation. Nutritional problems among children cause major morbidity and mortality in India. India is home to the largest number of underweight and stunted children in the world. Aim and objectives: 1) To assess prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting among under-five children 2) To study factors associated with underweight, stunting and wasting among under-five childrenMethods: It was community based descriptive cross sectional study conducted during January 2010 to December 2011 at Urban Health Center of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine catering approximately 27000 populations. 650 under- fives residing in urban field practice area were included in the study with the help of Stratified random sampling technique. Data was analyzed using SPSS software 16 version and OpenEpi Software Version 2.3.Results: 40.46% under five children were stunted, 38.15% were underweight, and 16% were wasted. The difference observed between stunted and normal study subjects with reference to type of family, education of mother, birth weight and birth order were statistically significant. The proportion of under- five children with underweight showed significant association with their age, socioeconomic status, education mother, birth weight and birth order. Proportion of under-five children with SAM and MAM decreased significantly with increase in education status of mother. Significantly higher proportion of under-five children with birth weight less than 2.5 kg and higher birth order were grouped as SAM and MAM.Conclusions: Maternal education, birth weight and birth order of children were significantly associated with all three types of under nutrition i.e. underweight, stunting and wasting. Proportion of children with underweight increases significantly with increase in age and decrease in socioeconomic status. There was no religion wise or gender wise variation in proportion of children with under nutrition was reported among study subjects.

Background: Nowadays, obesity is one of the biggest public health problems. Obesity is an excessive accumulation of fat that can occur when fat-producing foods, such as carbohydrates or sugar, are over-consumed. Sucrose is a type of carbohydrate contained in food and is a medium for bacterial growth. Therefore, the consumption of sucrose can increase the risk of dental caries. Purpose: This study aims to analyse the correlation between carbohydrate intake and dental caries in obese individuals. Methods: This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. In this study, 50 participants aged 18–40 were selected from an obese community in Jakarta using a quota sampling technique. The carbohydrate intake was assessed using the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), the body fat percentage was measured with the bioelectrical impedance analysis method, and the dental caries index was assessed using the decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMF-T) index. The data obtained were tested with a simple linear regression statistical test at a significance level of 5%. Results: The results showed that the average carbohydrate daily intake value of obese individuals was 1209.84 g, while the average value of the DMF-T index for obese individuals was 7.98. The results of the statistical tests revealed that there was a strong and positive correlation between carbohydrate intake and the DMF-T index. The effect of carbohydrate intake on the DMF-T index was 50.98%. Conclusion: A positive correlation means that the larger the carbohydrate intake, the higher the DMF-T index. Hence, controlling carbohydrate intake can prevent dental caries.
