The end of the 20th and the 21st century is a period of active interaction between Russia and China in the field of art. Chinese fine art has been seriously influenced by the Russian academic school and the traditions of Russian realism in general. Modern Russian painting is also enriched with elements of Chinese art, since cultural contacts that influence the art of domestic artists have expanded enormously in recent decades. Interesting processes of interaction and mutual influence of different cultures take place in Petersburg art. St. Petersburg becomes the center of the intersection of East and West. These changes concern even such a stable school as the academic one, connected with the traditions of realistic art. This phenomenon needs to be studied. A special role in the artistic interchange is played by the modern St. Petersburg academic school. The novelty of this research consists in studying some phenomena of Chinese cultural life associated with the influence of St. Petersburg art and in identifying mutual influences that are found in the works of Chinese and St. Petersburg masters of painting. The article uses methods of comparative analysis, observation, and interviewing to identify common patterns of the development of art in the two countries. Contemporary St. Petersburg artists representing the academic school are extremely in demand in China, have been there many times and cooperate at various levels with representatives of the cultural community. Chinese art-collectors and artists actively cooperate with artists and develop interesting projects. During the pandemic, real contacts between countries decreased, but moved to the virtual space. Now many educational and cultural programs are held remotely. Creative ties do not weaken and this gives hope for the further development of cultural cooperation at all levels.

This chapter examines the production, function, and social use of public sculpture during the Roman Republic (509–27 bce). After an historical introduction, it focuses on the active interaction of plastic arts with the viewer and the different levels of meaning and understanding, surveying the types, subjects, and materials and the intent (honorary, commemorative, votive, funerary, or cult images) of republican sculpture. The state-regulated management of statues in public places—mainly honorary portraiture, which spread from the fourth century bce onward—is also discussed. Space is devoted to the viewing and reception of a portrait, which was a system of visual and material signs. Besides, statues “functioned” in a specific topographical setting. The chapter then discusses the urban scenography for statues along the triumphal route in Rome; the impact of the new Greece-oriented artistic tendencies in marble sculpture and acrolithic cult statues with respect to the conservative perception of the traditional terracotta plastic; and the ideological and religious meaning of the temple coroplastic art, which followed the spread of sacred buildings constructed both in Rome and in Italy.

Introduction. The article examines historical sources dealing with Lama Zodbo-Arakba Samtanov, the Head Lama of Buddhists of the Kalmyk steppe in 1873–1886, in terms of interaction between the Russian state administration and Kalmyk Buddhists. Data and methods. The research is based on historical-descriptive and comparative methods of historical analysis. Its focus is on the archive documents, including the memorandum of 21 January 1880 directed by the Head Lama of Kalmyk Buddhists Zodbo-Arakba Samtanov to the Minister of State Property A. A. Liven and the 1886 article ”Smert´poslednego lamy” (Death of the Last Lama) in the local newspaper Astrakhanskii spravochnyi listok. Results. This paper has examined the historical sources pertaining to Lama Samtanov’s biography. Of particular interest for the research was the evidence of his participation in the interdepartment discussions on a number of urgent issues of the second half of the nineteenth century, such as the staff of Kalmyk Buddhist monasteries being reduced and the traditional Buddhist education of Kalmyks being restricted. Also, the article focuses on the description of the ritual of Lama’s cremation that took place on 14 December 1886. Conclusions. The second half of the nineteenth century saw a more active interaction between the Buddhists of the Kalmyk steppe and Russian state ministeries and departments dealing with Kalmyk affairs. The Kalmyk senior lamas participated in a dialogue with Russian officials in an effort to defend their system of Buddhist monasteries and the traditional rules and customs of the local Buddhists. Lama Samtanov’s memorandum is a vivid example of interaction between Kalmyk Buddhists and the administration of the Russian Empire. The article ”Death of the Last Lama” in Astrakhanskii spravochnyi listok that describes the ritual of Lama’s cremation is not only a valuable source but also the evidence that shows some of the local journalists’ positive attitudes towards the Buddhist monasteries’ role in the life of Kalmyks in the late nineteenth century.

The aim of the paper is to study the problem of future aircraft maintenance engineers’ training for improving professional communication. Higher aviation educational institutions ensure that graduates master communication skills and acquire communication competencies that allow them to solve typical tasks of their work. Due to internalization and globalization of aviation sphere, communication in the international airports is carried out in English. However, the level of English proficiency of future aircraft maintenance engineers is not sufficient to communicate effectively while performing professional tasks. To solve the problem the pedagogical conditions of future aircraft maintenance engineers’ training for improving professional communication are suggested (enhancing motivation to communicate through active interaction and creating situations of success in the classroom; modeling professional communicative situations to ensure the practical orientation of training; use of technological innovations for self-analysis and self-education). The defined pedagogical conditions are implemented through specially chosen methods: interactive (ice-breaking, warming up activities, training exercises, etc.), case study, role playing, ICT (based on Learning Management Systems MOODLE).

Metapoetics of ekphrastic impulses and gestures in the prose of the most “non-ekphrastic” writer. The article analyzes ekphrases as well as ekphrastic impulses and gestures in Chekhov's short stories. It is shown that ekphrases perform an important function in the works of the writer, being a significant part of the artistic whole. It is concluded that the analysis of ekphrastic inclu-sions in the aspect of the author's metapoetics indicates a constant change in the artistic language, which is associated with a change in the type of ekphrasis (from mimetic to non-mimetic) and its function in the literary work: from the plot-forming function to the situation modeling function, and then to the invisi-ble hint function, suggesting active interaction between the author and the reader.
