Electrical resistances of combined bark and wood of 50 red maple (Acerrubrum L.) trees were strongly correlated with phloem width with an inverse correlation coefficient of −0.92. Diameter at 1.4 m aboveground was determined to be transitively correlated with electrical resistance through its strong correlation with phloem width. Little detectable relationship existed between electrical resistance and potassium concentration in phloem tissues. An electrical model is presented to illustrate the path of electrical current between electrodes in the tissues measured.

The article explores the correlation strength of the ten most important cryptocurrencies, emphasizing the examination of differences during the periods of rising and falling prices. The daily and weekly returns of selected cryptocurrencies are taken as the basis for calculating and determining the correlation strength using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The survey covers the period from the beginning of 2017 to Bitcoin’s last local bottom in mid-March 2020. Research findings are as follows: 1) the most important cryptocurrencies are mostly moderately positively correlated with each other over time; 2) correlation strength decreases slightly during the bull period, but mostly remain in the range of moderate correlation; 3) correlation strength increases significantly during the bear period, with most cryptocurrencies strongly correlated with each other. The results do not change significantly if the daily or weekly cryptocurrency returns are used as the basis. A strong correlation in the period of falling prices prevents the effective diversification of the cryptocurrency portfolio, which must be considered when investing funds in the cryptocurrency market.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be spun into fibers as potential lightweight replacements for copper in electrical current transmission since lightweight CNT fibers weigh <1/6th that of an equivalently dimensioned copper wire. Experimentally, it has been shown that the electrical resistance of CNT fibers increases with longitudinal strain; however, although fibers may be under radial strain when they are compressed during crimping at contacts for use in electrical current transport, there has been no study of this relationship. Herein, we apply radial stress at the contact to a CNT fiber on both the nano- and macro-scale and measure the changes in fiber and contact resistance. We observed an increase in resistance with increasing pressure on the nanoscale as well as initially on the macro scale, which we attribute to the decreasing of axial CNT…CNT contacts. On the macro scale, the resistance then decreases with increased pressure, which we attribute to improved radial contact due to the closing of voids within the fiber bundle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) show that applied pressure on the fiber can damage the π–π bonding, which could also contribute to the increased resistance. As such, care must be taken when applying radial strain on CNT fibers in applications, including crimping for electrical contacts, lest they operate in an unfavorable regime with worse electrical performance.

Background: Nearly half of hospitalized patients with bacteriuria or treated for pneumonia receive unnecessary antibiotics (noninfectious or nonbacterial syndrome such as asymptomatic bacteriuria), excess duration (antibiotics prescribed for longer than necessary), or avoidable fluoroquinolones (safer alternative available) at hospital discharge.1–3 However, whether antibiotic overuse at discharge varies between hospitals or is associated with patient outcomes remains unknown. Methods: From July 2017 to December 2018, trained abstractors at 46 Michigan hospitals collected detailed data on a sample of adult, non–intensive care, hospitalized patients with bacteriuria (positive urine culture with or without symptoms) or treated for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP; includes those with the disease formerly known as healthcare-associated pneumonia [HCAP]). Antibiotic prescriptions at discharge were assessed for antibiotic overuse using a previously described, guideline-based hierarchical algorithm.3 Here, we report the proportion of patients discharged with antibiotic overuse by the hospital. We also assessed hospital-level correlation (using Pearson’s correlation coefficient) between antibiotic overuse at discharge for patients with bacteriuria and patients treated for CAP. Finally, we assessed the association of antibiotic overuse at discharge with patient outcomes (mortality, readmission, emergency department visit, and antibiotic-associated adverse events) at 30 days using logit generalized estimating equations adjusted for patient characteristics and probability of treatment. Results: Of 17,081 patients (7,207 with bacteriuria; 9,874 treated for pneumonia), nearly half (42.2%) had antibiotic overuse at discharge (36.3% bacteriuria and 51.1% pneumonia). The percentage of patients discharged with antibiotic overuse varied 5-fold among hospitals from 14.7% (95% CI, 8.0%–25.3%) to 74.3% (95% CI, 64.2%–83.8%). Hospital rates of antibiotic overuse at discharge were strongly correlated between bacteriuria and CAP (Pearson’s correlation coefficient, 0.76; P ≤ .001) (Fig. 1). In adjusted analyses, antibiotic overuse at discharge was not associated with death, readmission, emergency department visit, or Clostridioides difficile infection. However, each day of overuse was associated with a 5% increase in the odds of patient-reported antibiotic-associated adverse events after discharge (Fig. 2). Conclusions: Antibiotic overuse at discharge was common, varied widely between hospitals, and was associated with patient harm. Furthermore, antibiotic overuse at discharge was strongly correlated between 2 disparate diseases, suggesting that prescribing culture or discharge processes—rather than disease-specific factors—contribute to overprescribing at discharge. Thus, discharge stewardship may be needed to target multiple diseases.Funding: This study was supported by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network.Disclosures: Valerie M. The results of the conducted studies 102 of the manufacturer testify to the presence of essential clinical and echographic, immunological and morphological features of the "wealthy" or "insolvent" scar on the uterus after the cesarean section. The correlation analysis with the calculation of the Correlation coefficient of Gamma (G) indicates a statistically significant relationship between the average degree between the way of the delivery and the scar thickness (G = 0.55, p = 0.001), strong correlation between the ultrasound data (G = 0.74 , p = 0.002) and antibodies to type I collagen (G = 0.93, p = 0.003). Determining the level of antibodies to the type I collagen is the mostimportant criterion confirming the usefulness of the scar on the uterus. Keywords: cesarean section, uterine scar, pregnancy

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a technological method of protection against electrical corrosion. One more way to protect the objects is to prevent the electrical current from getting to them. For example, railway objects are surrounded with a material with raised electrical resistance. Design/methodology/approach The railway infrastructure objects (foundations, contact-line supports, reinforced concrete sub-bases, bridge structures, pipelines of engineering networks, supports of passenger platforms and pedestrian bridges, concrete plinth walls of station buildings) are subjected to destruction due to the action of electrical current. One of destruction factors is a corrosion of the concrete constructions which is caused by the leakage current action. Findings Leakage currents and stray currents bypass the structure of supports of high passenger platforms or pipes of engineering networks. These currents spread by the line with the least resistance outside of the structures. Research limitations/implications Electrical leakage current from the rails gets into such structures through sleepers, ballast and soil and leads to accelerated corrosion leaching of concrete. Practical implications The constructions are protected against the destructive effect of electrical corrosion on the metal or concrete of the structure. This scheme is suitable for the construction and reconstruction of railway structures which operate on electrified sections of railways. Originality/value Schemes of technological solution are proposed for protection of foundations, supports of high passenger platforms, pipelines of engineering networks, etc. For this, the arrangement of soil-contained screens with big electrical resistance is suggested.
