Therapeutic Efficacy of Garlic (Allium sativum), Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globules) Extracts in the Treatment of Bovine Endometritis

Background: Endometritis is one of the major causes of subfertility in bovines. The present study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of ethanolic extracts of garlic, turmeric and eucalyptus in the treatment of bovine endometritic as an alternative to antibiotics. Methods: Forty crossbred cows affected with endometritis were equally divided into 4 groups. Group I (control) cows were treated intrauterinely (i.u) with streptopenicillin 2.5 g + 30 ml normal saline for 3 days and group II, III and IV cows were treated (i.u) with 30-40 ml of ethanolic extract of garlic, turmeric and eucalyptus for 3 consecutive days. The animals were inseminated artificially on subsequent estrus after the treatment. Result: Bacterial count in uterine flushing declined significantly after treatment in all the four groups. The percentage of reduction in bacterial count was higher in garlic treated cows than in control and other treatment groups. A significant increase in percentage of PMNs was found after treatment in all the groups. The overall conception rate was 40% in control group, 50% in group II and 30% in group III and IV. It was concluded that ethanolic extract of garlic for the treatment of endometritis resulted in better conception rate and significantly higher percentage reduction of bacterial load than other treatment and control groups.

Background: Nephrotoxicity is characterized by raised serum urea and creatinine levels and kidneys being one of the primary organs of drug concentration and excretion are vulnerable to many widely used marketed drugs, including anti-cancer drugs, antibiotics, immunosuppressants, and radio contrast agents, are nephrotoxic. Aim: To determine the nephroprotective effect of ethanolic extract of Carica papaya seeds in Aminoglycoside induced acute nephrotoxicity. Study design: Quasi Experimental study. Methodology: Thirty Sprague Dawley rats were sub divided into 3 groups i.e., I, II and III with 10 rats in each group. Group II and III were administered Aminoglycoside drug; Gentamycin in 80 mg/kg) via intraperitoneal route once daily for 5 consecutive days to induce acute nephrotoxicity. At day 6, nephrotoxicity was confirmed by measuring serum urea and creatinine. Ethanolic extract of Carica papaya seeds (1000 mg/kg) was started once daily through oral route in group III for 5 consecutive days to see the nephroprotective effects of seed extract after causing acute kidney injury. All animals were given standard diet pellets manufactured at NIH. Results: Mean serum urea and creatinine for Group I (Control Group) at day 0 were 24.90 mg/dL ± 1.633 and .750 mg/dL ± .0619 respectively. Mean serum urea and creatinine for Group II (Disease Control Group) was 81.00 mg/dL ± 1.247 and 1.980mg/dL ± .0467 at day 6th. This suggested induction of nephrotoxicity by Gentamycin. Mean serum urea and creatinine for Group III (Ethanolic Extract Treated Group) at 11 day was 72.40mg/dL± .991 and 1.680 mg/dL± .0467 after 5 days treatment with ethanolic extract of Carica papaya seeds. Conclusion: We concluded that ethanolic extract of Carica papaya seeds has significant nephroprotective effects on Aminoglycoside induced acute nephrotoxicity in rats. Background: Cryptosporidiosis caused by Cryptosporidium spp. is a zoonotic disease and is the most prevalent pathogens worldwide and leads to severe diarrhoeal diseases and affects the immunological status of the individual. Thus, the study was undertaken to examine the anti-cryptosporidial efficacy of curcumin in comparison with ethanolic extract of curcuma longa in immunocompromised mice infected with oocysts isolated from cattle calves of Jammu region and identified as Cryptosporidium parvum using nested PCR on small subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (SSU rRNA) gene. Methods: Two hundred female Swiss albino mice were equally divided into ten groups. Group I were kept as a healthy control, group II were immunocompromised, group III were immunocompromised and infected, group IV animals were immunocompromised, infected and treated orally with nitazoxanide. Animals in groups V to VII were immunocompromised, infected and treated with ethanolic extract of C. longa @ 4, 6 and 8 mg/kg/day/os respectively whereas groups VIII to X were immunocompromised, infected and treated with pure salt of curcumin @ 4, 6 and 8 mg/kg/day/os respectively for 5 successive days. Thus, mean oocysts per gram faeces, body weight gain and histopathological changes were measured in different groups. Result: Administration of curcumin as a therapeutic agent @ 8 mg/kg body weight for five days resulted in higher percent mean oocyst reduction of 74.03% and improved body weight gain in experimentally infected mice. Histopathological changes showed that treatment with oral curcumin (group X) in animals had minimal and improved intestinal lesions as compared to animals treated with C. longa (group VII). Altogether, curcumin showed promising anticryptosporidial effects under in vivo conditions and deserves further exploration.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Neem (Azadiracta indica) extract in 20 infectious repeat breeder crossbred cows. Animals were divided into two groups of ten in each. The animals in first group were treated with 15% concentration of Neem extract w/v dissolved in saline to make 30 ml, Intra Uterine at 24 hrs intervals for 7 days, while the animals in control group were infused with 30 ml saline for 7 days. Bacterial count in uterine flushing declined significantly (p less than 0.05) after treatment in Neem group. A significant increase (p less than 0.05) in total cellular count and PMNs % was found in Neem group than in control group. An overall recovery rate of 80% vs 20% and conception rate of 50% vs 10% was found in Neem treated cows over control group proving its efficacy in infectious repeat breeder cows.

Abstract: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) is one of the largest group of carcinogen in the environment.  An agent that has antigenotoxic and anticarcinogen potency is needed to prevent DNA damage and carcinogenesis. Soursop leaves have a chemopreventive action. This study was aimed to assess the effectiveness of ethanolic extract of soursop leaves in prevention of dysplasia of upper surface of tongue in rats. This was a true laboratory experimental study with the post test-only control group design, using 24 male Sprague Dawley rats divided into six groups. The upper surfaces of tongues of group I-III were induced by DMBA topically three times a week for 16 weeks; group II and III were induced by DMBA added soursop leaves ethanolic extract of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight daily for 18 weeks; group IV was given soursop leaves ethanolic extract 200 mg/kg body weight; group V was given DMSO 1%; and group VI was untreated. After 18th week, rats were terminated and tongue necropsies in longitudinal anteroposterior direction were conducted. The clinical changes of the upper surfaces of the tongues were observed and the histological changes were observed by using HE staining to confirm signs of dysplasia. The Kruskal Wallis test showed differences between groups, and the Mann-Withney test showed not significantly decrease of mild dysplasia of group II and group III compared to group I (p>0.05). In conclusion, ethanolic extract of soursop leaves was not effective in prevention of dysplasia of the upper surface of rat’s tongue.Keywords: dysplasia; soursop leave extract; dorsal part of tongue; DMBA  Abstrak: Senyawa golongan PAH merupakan salah satu kelompok karsinogen terbesar di lingkungan. Sebagai upaya untuk mencegah kerusakan DNA serta karsinogenesis, diperlukan suatu agen yang berpotensi antigenotoksik sekaligus antikarsinogenik. Daun sirsak terbukti mempunyai aksi kemopreventif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji efektivitas ekstrak etanol daun sirsak dalam mencegah displasia pada dorsum lingue tikus. Jenis penelitian ialah true experimental laboratory dengan the post test-only control group design yang menggunakan 24 ekor tikus galur Sprague Dawley jantan, dibagi dalam enam kelompok. Dorsum lingue tikus kelompok I - III diinduksi DMBA secara topikal tiga kali seminggu selama 16 minggu; kelompok II dan III selain diinduksi DMBA, juga diberi ekstrak etanol daun sirsak 100 dan 200 mg/kg berat badan setiap hari selama 18 minggu; kelompok IV diberi ekstrak etanol 200 mg/kg BB; kelompok V diberi DMSO 1%; dan kelompok VI tidak diberi perlakuan. Terminasi dan nekropsi lidah tikus longitudinal anteroposterior dilaksanakan setelah minggu ke 18. Perubahan pada dorsum lingue diamati secara klinis dan perubahan histologik dilihat dengan pewarnaan HE untuk mengonfirmasi tanda displasia. Uji Kruskal Wallis menunjukkan perbedaan antar kelompok, sedangkan uji Mann Whitney menunjukkan penurunan tidak bermakna displasia ringan pada kelompok II dan III dibanding kelompok I. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah ekstrak etanol daun sirsak tidak efektif dalam mencegah displasia epitel dorsum lingue tikus.Kata kunci: displasia; ekstrak daun sirsak; dorsum lingue; DMBA

Abstract To study the therapeutic effect of Armillarisin A on patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and on serum IL-1β and IL-4, sixty patients with UC were randomly divided into three groups: Armillarisin A treatment group (Group I), Armillarisin-combined hormone therapy group (Group II), and hormones treatment as the control group (Group III). Patients in Group I received Armillarisin A 10 mg enema in 100 ml saline. Patients in Group II received Armillarisin A 10 mg and dexamethasone 5 mg enema in 100 ml saline. Patients in Group III received only dexamethasone 5 mg enema in 100 ml saline. The therapeutic efficacy and serum levels of IL-4 and IL-1β were observed. After 4 week treatment, the total effective rates were 90.0 % in Group I and 95.0 % in Group II. Both are higher than it in control group, which was 70.0 %. The serum levels of IL-4 in Groups I and II were significantly higher than it in control group. Compared to IL-4 levels before treatment, the levels of IL-4 after treatment were significantly higher in both Groups I and II. The serum levels of IL-11β were significantly decreased in Groups I and II in comparison to it in control group. Compared to the levels of IL-1β before treatment, the levels of IL-1β were significantly decreased. Armillarisin A shows a significant effect in treating UC. It helps increase IL-4 and lower IL-1β and the mechanism may be related to the body’s immunity regulation.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Ciprofloxacinin in 20 infectious repeat breeder crossbred cows brought to the AI centre of Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Mhow and nearby Government AI centers. Animals were divided into two groups ten in each .The animals in first group were treated with Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride @ 4 mg/kg BW IU. The animals in control group were infused with 30 ml saline IU. Bacterial count, total Cellular count and PMNs values were reduced highly significantly (P Lass Than 0.01) in Ciprofloxacin treated group than in control group. 90.00 % cows under Ciprofloxacin treatment became negative to White side test. An overall conception rate of 70.00 per cent was found in Ciprofloxacin treated repeat breeder cross bred cows.

A method for improving the reproductive performance of first-calf heifers using a complex mineraland vitamin feed additive is presented to the production. The animals of the control group were fed according to the main diet accepted in the farm and mineral matters. The animals from group I were fed the main ration with 120 g of the complex mineraland vitamin feed additiv per head according to recipe No.1. The animals from group II received the main ration with 120 g of the feed additive per head according to recipe No.2. The cow mating index of the first heifers of the control group is 2.1, which is0.48 and 0.60 times higher than in groups I and II. The highest rate of fecundation showed the cows of the experimental group II. It made up 63%, 7% higher than the experimental group I(56 %) and 18% higher than the control group (45 %). After the second fecundation, the conception rate in group II was 37%, which is 18% higher than in the control group and 7% higher than in animalsof group I. The calf crop in all groups was 100%.

The article presents the comparative analysis of the state of the cervix in women with endometrial polyps and micropolyps. Patients and methods. The study involved 130 patients aged 18-35 years: 70 patients with endometrial polyps (group I), 30 patients with micropolyps (group II) and 30 patients of the control group (group III). Results. According to the anamnesis of women in the I group were significantly more frequent diseases of the cervix, which corrected physical surgery methods, in particular cryodestruction. In group II, the representatives of these indicators were similar to healthy. Normal colposcopic picture met significantly less frequently in patients and I, and II group. The differences in the incidence of HPV high oncogenic risk in all groups were not statistically significant. Conclusion. Destructive methods used in the detection of any changes in the cervix are often overly aggressive, form scars and contributing to inflamaciones process. In the chain of events leading to the formation of PE, cervical pathology and its correction can take the basic place. The present study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of Ovsynch and Ovsynch plus protocol in postpartum (day 60) Sahiwal cows (n=18). Animals were randomly divided into three equal groups, viz., Ovsynch group Ovsynch plus group and Control group. Animals of group I (n = 6) were treated with traditional Ovsynch protocol. The animals (n = 6) of group II were treated with Ovsynch plus protocol which consisted of an initial intramuscular injection of eCG (Folligon) @ 250 IU on day 60 postpartum followed 3 days later by GPG (Ovsynch) protocol. In group-III Control, no treatment was given to animals (n = 6). Treated animals were inseminated at a fixed time between 14 and 20 hrs after second GnRH injection, irrespective of estrus detection. Blood samples were collected from each animal on days 50 and 60 postpartum to determine the status of cyclicity in animals based on serum concentrations of progesterone (P4). A third blood sample was collected on the day of prostaglandin treatment to determine the response of first GnRH injection. Four animals each were cyclic, and two were acyclic in both treatment groups. Four animals each responded to first GnRH treatment in both treatment groups. Similarly, two animals each got conceived giving conception rate of 50% (2/4) in each treatment. In the control group, one out of 6 animals got conceived yielding 16.66 % conception rate (1/6) during the study period. It may be thus concluded that Ovsynch and Ovsynch plus protocol may be used during the early postpartum period to improve the reproductive efficiency in postpartum Sahiwal cows.

Irisin is a new myokine that is suspected to influence metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, there is a great controversy with respect to its level in cases of MetS and its correlation with different metabolic parameters. The present study assesses irisin levels in MetS patients and studies its relationship to metabolic and liver functions to evaluate the possible role of the liver in regulation of this level. Sixty subjects were included in this experiment, who were divided into 3 groups: group I (normal control), group II (MetS patients with normal liver enzymes), and group III (MetS with elevated liver enzymes and fatty liver disease). Serum irisin levels showed significant increases in groups II and III compared with group I, and significant increases in group III compared with group II. Also, irisin levels were positively correlated with body mass index, serum triglycerides, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), and liver enzymes. We concluded that serum irisin levels increased in patients with MetS, especially those with elevated liver enzymes, and had a positive correlation with parameters of lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis with the possibility of hepatic clearance to irisin.
