AbstractDoes having a communicative role other than the speaker’s make a difference to the way pragmatic meaning is construed? Standard paradigms in interpersonal pragmatics have implicitly assumed a speaker-centric perspective over the years, however modern approaches have re-considered the role of listener evaluations. In the present study, I examine whether assuming different communicative roles (speaker, listener, observer) results in varying interpretations. A web-based experiment revealed that participants who took the perspective of different characters in short stories differed in the way they interpreted what the speaker meant. In most cases, participants in the role of the listener interpreted speaker meaning in more negative ways than participants in the other roles. The present study suggests that the directionality of the difference (negative inferences under the listener’s perspective) could be explained by taking into account affective factors.

This research focuses on the study of the Kaṭha Upaniṣad text and its implementation in social life. The Kaṭha Upaniṣad is one of the important books among the other Upanishad books. This book also contains many teachings of Hindu theology and divine philosophy. Ātman and Brahman are important discussions in the Kaṭha Upaniṣad. The philosophical side of the Kaṭha Upaniṣad is closely related to human concepts and the way of life to be free from suffering. The Kaṭha Upaniṣad offers a unique perspective by understanding the main character of mankind, namely Ātman (God within oneself). The most tangible context of the Kaṭha Upaniṣad teachings can be seen in the Sai Study Group (SSG) Denpasar. Sai Baba’s discourses do not indeed refer to the Kaṭha Upaniṣad as the main reference, but every activity at the Sai Study Group Denpasar has an alignment with the Vedic teachings.

This article explores how in two short stories, ‘‘La primera vez que me vi’’ (The First Time I Saw Myself) and ‘‘El niñño perdido’’ (The Lost Child), Elena Garro draws on several discourses, contrasting the official one of the status quo (in post-revolutionary Mexico) with the alternative discourses of those who find themselves on the margins of society or in exile and hence in the position of ‘‘Other’’. The article also focuses on the way the marginalization of the female protagonists of the stories in some ways reflects that experienced by the author at a certain point in her life.

This study deals with objectification, especially towards Elizabeth Bennet (Lizzy), in the classic novel Pride and Prejudice (1813) and the mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2009) which were written by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith. This study aims to examine how the resistance towards objectification is pictured in the mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies using Nussbaum’s theory of objectification. As a comparative study, there are some things that will be compared in this study, such as the different time period when both novels were first published, the way the authors pictured objectification, and the addition of zombie in the mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. This study uses qualitative method with comparative literature as the approach. The result of this study concludes that Lizzy is objectified by Mr. Collins in terms of instrumentality, fungibility, ownership, and denial of subjectivity. The addition of zombie in the mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies implies as if there is a resistance towards objectification, with Lizzy having the skills of a warrior, while in fact the objectification is real as experienced by Lizzy. In the perspective of comparative literature, mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies tends to have ambivalence even though it is published in postmodern era. On one hand, Lizzy is able to defend herself from zombie, on the other hand, she still falls victim to the objectification done by Mr. Collins. In other words, the resistance towards objectification in the mash-up novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is not able to protect Lizzy from the objectification done by Mr. Collins.
