Dealing with unexpected setbacks is one of the challenges of fieldwork, and here the author describes an encounter in which he became the subject of scandal and ostracism. Whilst such negative experiences can be unsettling, they can be put to good anthropological use and serve as a source of insight. However, it is argued that a greater element of practical training would be helpful if research students are to be equipped to think on their feet should difficulties arise.

This study investigated the impact of two approaches to research-led education on students’ learning and their understandings of research in the context of two university courses in international business involving third year undergraduate and graduate students. One approach involved the lecturer using his research as the basis for a case-study assignment involving an intercultural business negotiation. In the second approach students conducted a research project in which they reviewed the academic literature to identify practical implications for business and theoretical gaps as the basis for future research. A questionnaire was used to explore students’ perceptions of the impacts on their learning and understandings of research. Students’ understandings of research were most informed by the research based learning project which was presented to them as an experience of doing research. Students valued the lecturer using his research in the course because of his enthusiasm and his expertise and mentoring in doing research. However many students developed only limited understandings of research in the subject area, despite their direct experience of the lecturers’ research. The implications for the design of research-led education approaches are explored.

The importance of the subject “Natural Science Picture of the World” is discussed for students of humanitarian faculties, the main task of which is the formation of a natural science worldview. Given the psychophysiological characteristics of humanities students, practical training methods are proposed for the successful formation of a scientific worldview. The most effective and scientifically based practical methods and approaches are given that complement the lecture course and increase the degree of students’ independent work. Using the proposed methods allows us to determine the degree of formation of general cultural competencies among students. Given the humanitarian orientation of students, it can be assumed that one of the effective methods of practical independent work is the structuring of the material studied by compiling integrative tables. Turning to integrative tables, which systematize natural science knowledge in certain sections corresponding to the material being studied, at the same time, the most famous cultural and historical events related to this period of time are given, students have an increase in the relationship between objects, complex systemic laws occur in the process of integrating knowledge. The use of integrative tables helps to form a worldview based on an understanding of the connections between nature, man, his ideas and the development of human civilization. Also, attention is paid to the specifics of laboratory work for humanities students.

The training of highly qualified specialists for the railway industry is impossible without the application of a new strategy for the development of the educational process. It should include new forms and methods based on the advanced achievements of science and technology. Comprehensive work on introducing modern interactive simulators into the educational process becomes necessary and appropriate. They imitate the operation of real mechanisms, systems and equipment. Of particular relevance is the simulation of production processes. This is one of the effective methods that helps to acquire scientific knowledge, help to work out and simulate a training or production situation. As an example, we consider a model for the organization of the educational process for college students, based on the basis of system-activity and competency-based approaches. These approaches are aimed at the active use of imitation modeling in the educational process. Experience shows that such educational activities contribute to the better assimilation of academic knowledge through their systematization, algorithmization and elaboration at different levels, taking into account intersubject communications. Such work complements knowledge with good skills. It makes them more durable due to active practical training and immersion in the subject. Such work brings students closer to real working conditions, and therefore forms students’ qualities and competencies inherent in a competitive specialist in the railway industry.
