Selama 21 hari penelitian, grazing ikan baronang tertinggi berada pada kepadatan 1200 g/m2 sebesar -23,58% dan yang terendah pada kepadatan 600 g/m2sebesar -12,4%.Kata Kunci : Grazing, Ikan Baronang, Rumput laut, Rakit Jaring ApungAbstract: Pest and disease attacks are a cause of disruption of seaweed growth, which causes a decrease in seaweed production. One pest in seaweed is baronang fish (Siganus guttatus). The aim of this study is to determine grazing rate of S. guttatus on K. alvarezii seaweed with different densities. The study was conducted in January 2018 in the area of seaweed cultivation in the waters of Tanjung Tiram village, South Konawe Regency. The total of plots in one unit of floating cage was three plots pieces measuring 440 x 100 x 50 cm. Raft is divided into four plots and labeled. In each plot cultivated K. alvarezii seaweed with an initial weight of 100 g per clump where each experimental unit is differentiated based on stocking density of 600 g / m2, 900 g / m2 and 1200 g / m2. At each grazing data collection (drilling power) Baronang fish in floating raft containers were stocked with one Baronang fish with the same weight of 135 g. During maintenance, Baronang fish is given commercial feed as much as 5% of body weight. As for the 21 days of research, the highest Baronang fish grazing is at a density of 1200 g / m2 at -23.58% and the lowest at a density of 600 g / m2 at -12.4%.Keywords: Grazing, Baronang fish, seaweed, floating cage

Seaweed of Kappaphycus alvarezii is generally cultivated by the long line method through the water surface. The verticulture method might be an alternative method by using water column. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of depth on the growth and carrageenan content of K. alvarezii which was cultivated vertically. Cultivation was carried out in the floating raft (10 x 10 m)2 contained of 36 vertical nets. The size of each net was 5 x 2 m2 whereas the depth was 0.2, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 m. Seaweed seedlings of 50 g was each tied to the vertical nets; the distance between the knot was 20 cm. The results showed that the depth was significantly different to the daily growth rate of K. alvarezii (p<0.05) but did not affect carrageenan content (p>0.05). Therefore, this method might be applied as an alternative method to optimally increase seaweed production in narrow area without affecting seaweed quality.

Kappaphycus alvarezii cultivation by the verticulture method has been introduced since 2013. However, scientific studies on some technical aspects are still needed to improve the quality, quantity, and continuity of production and utilization of area in a maximum and productive manner. One of them is the planting distance between seed clumps. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal planting distance between seed clumps on seaweed verticulture method. Seaweed was cultured using a 10x10 m2 floating raft containing 36 vertical nets of 5x2 m2/net. Seaweed seeds with an initial weight of 50 g were tied to a vertical net with a distance between knot on the verticulture net of 15 cm, 25 cm, and 35 cm. Seaweed cultivation was done for 3 cycles (1 cycle = 45 days) continuously in the cycle of planting season. The experimental units were prepared with Completely Randomized Design (RAL) with 3 replications. The results showed that daily growth rate (DGR) and carrageenan content of seaweed planted with a distance of 15 cm, 25 cm, and 35 cm between clumps were not significantly different (P>0.05). However, it is recommended to apply 25 cm distance between seed clumps in the verticulture method.

Cost-effectiveness, food utilization and proximate composition of Clarias gariepinus fingerlings fed locally formulated (sinking) and commercial (floating) diets in tarpaulin tanks were observed for 56 days. Ninety (90) C. gariepinus fingerlings with initial mean weight (72.99 g ± 3.09) per treatment were observed during the period with three replicates at a stocking density of 15 fish per m2. The fish were fed 5% body weight three times daily. Results showed that C. gariepinus fingerlings fed floating diet had significantly lower (p<0.05) feed conversion ratio (0.83 ± 0.03) than sinking diet (3.23 ± 0.40). Protein efficiency ratio was significantly (p<0.05) higher in fish fed commercial diet (2.69 ± 0.09) than locally formulated (0.80 ± 0.11). Specific growth rate was significantly (p<0.05) higher in floating (3.29 ± 0.07) than sinking diet (0.97 ± 0.20). Incidence cost was lower (₦1,989.65) in fish fed commercial diet than locally formulated (₦3,819.63). The profit index was higher in C. gariepinus fed floating diet (0.74) than sinking (0.19). From these findings, floating (commercial) feed is recommended for feeding C. gariepinus fingerlings since it showed better food utilization, better proximate composition of the carcass, higher profit index and consequently lower incidence cost. Keywords: Clarias gariepinus, cost-effectiveness, sinking feed, floating feed, incidence cost.

The objective of this study was to evaluate different textures and storage forms of corn in piglet diets. Two experiments were conducted, one of which tested digestibility of nutrients and the other diet performance. In the digestibility trial, 24 crossbred (Landrace X Large White) barrows with an initial weight of 18.7 ± 1.5 kg were used. They were kept in metabolic cages in a randomized block design using the factorial arrangement 2 X 2 (type of corn - dent and flint X type of storage - moist grain silage and dry grain) and six replicates, with one animal as the experimental unit. The values of metabolizable energy (ME) obtained were 3841 kcal of ME/kg of dry matter (DM) from dry corn, 3912 kcal of ME/kg of DM from moist corn, 4022 kcal of DM from ensiled dry corn and 3928 kcal of ME/kg of DM from ensiled humidity corn. The ensilage process increases the digestibility coefficient of dry matter and crude protein and increases the digestible energy of the diets, independent of the process form. The type of corn did not influence these variables. In the performance trial, 60 barrows (initial weight of 6.5 ± 1.5 kg) of the same stock were used during 28 days of post-weaning distributed in the same experimental design, with five replicates and three animals as the experimental unit. The treatments did not influence the daily weigh gain or the daily feed intake. The dentate corn and the ensilage process decreased the feed conversion of the independent form (no significant interaction). The substitution of dry for ensilage corn increased the digestibility of the nutrients in the diets and the feed conversion of the piglets from 7 to 15 kg. Dentate corn promotes best feed conversion in this phase.

Coastal waters of Jeneponto, Bantaeng, and Bulukumba Regencies are the centre of seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii production in South Sulawesi. Culture management practices applied by farmers in these areas are highly variable. Therefore, this research was conducted to study culture management practices affect the seaweed production in the area. Field survey was conducted by interviewing 62 respondents using questionnaires. The dependent variable in this research was seaweed production, while the independent variables were culture management factors. Multiple regressions with dummy variable were employed to analyze the data to predict seaweed production. The results show that the seaweed productions per one cycle in the south coastal waters of South Sulawesi were ranging from 463 to 5,000 kg dry/3,000 m2. Using long line method, the average yield production was 1,502.3 kg dry/3,000 m2. Culture management practices that affect the seaweed production were distance between ropes, distance between seaweed seeds along the rope, rabbitfish predatory, ice-ice disease, weight of seed, seed origin, and source of pollution. Increasing seaweed production in the south coastal waters of South Sulawesi could be done through increasing weight of seed from 36.9 to 100.0 g/clump, quicker transport of seed, maintaining the distance between the ropes not more than 1.0 m, not increasing the distance between clump along the ropes more than 25 cm along as well as conducting seed planting based on cultivating season to prevent pest diseases and pollution.

Abstract The objective of this research was to determine the effect of competition for a feeding space at an automated supplement feeder on supplement intake behavior. A 2 yr study was conducted; each yr, 128 mixed-breed beef steers (n = 256, initial BW = 245 ± 27.5 kg) were randomly assigned to 8 paddocks. One paddock each yr (n = 16 steers) was selected to have continuous access to the feeder for the duration of the 16 wk trial; this paddock was designated the “tester” paddock. The automated feeder had 4 feeding stations that dispensed supplement after eligible animal’s RFID tags were read by the electronics of the feeder. Steers were limited to 0.50 kg supplement/d. Weekly, additional paddocks were commingled with the tester paddock to increase competition for the feeder. This resulted in a stocking density from 4 to 32 steers per feeding station. For yr 2, one feeding station was disabled, resulting in a stocking density of 5.3 to 42.7 steers per feeding station. Approximately 31% of the steers did not voluntarily use the feeder; therefore, effective competition was less than the study design. Mean weekly supplement intake and GPS location were recorded for steers in the tester paddock. Additionally, pedometer data were collected in yr 2. Weekly mean supplement intake and time spent near the feeder were regressed on actual feeder stocking density with yr as a random variable; wk was the experimental unit (n = 16 wk). Tester steers consumed an average of 0.27 kg supplement/d. Competition for a feeding station numerically reduced (P = 0.01) supplement intake by 5 g/d per steer of additional competition. Steers spent 4.4% of the time within 15 m of the feeder regardless of competition (P = 0.54). As competition increased, steers took more steps (P < 0.01). These data illustrate that in environments similar to this experiment, the feeder can be stocked with at least 20 animals per feeding station with minimal effects on supplement intake.

Abstract A total of 976 pigs (PIC 327×L42, initially 22 ± 1.5 kg BW) were used in a 160-d study to determine the influence of space allowance and marketing strategy on performance of pigs raised to heavy market weights (165 kg). Pens were blocked by location and allotted to 1 of 6 treatments with 8 pens/treatment. The first four treatments reduced space allowance/pig via initial pen stocking density: 14 pigs/pen (1.20 m2/pig), 17 pigs/pen (0.98 m2/pig), 20 pigs/pen (0.84 m2/pig), or 23 pigs/pen (0.73 m2/pig). The fifth treatment began with 25 pigs/pen (0.67 m2/pig) and the heaviest 3 pigs/pen were removed on d 93, then on d 122 pens were marketed to a common inventory of 20 pigs/pen, and on d 147 marketed to a common pen inventory of 17 pigs/pen. The sixth treatment began with 23 pigs/pen (0.73 m2/pig) and were marketed to a common inventory of 20 pigs/pen on d 108 and marketed to a common inventory of 17 pigs/pen on d 147. Data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIX with pen as the experimental unit. Overall (d 0 to 160) ADG, ADFI, and final BW decreased (linear, P < 0.001) and G:F increased (quadratic, P = 0.042) as space allowance decreased. When comparing treatments with multiple marketing events (treatments 5 and 6) to treatment 4, there was no evidence for differences (P > 0.05) for overall ADG or ADFI; however, overall G:F was improved (P < 0.05) for pigs initially stocked at 0.67 m2/pig and marketed four times compared to both treatments that initially allowed 0.73 m2/pig, regardless of marketing structure. These results indicate that decreasing space allowance of heavy weight pigs reduces growth, feed intake and final BW, although use of multiple marketing events prior to final marketing may allow for increased number of pigs marketed/pen while balancing reduced growth performance often associated with increased stocking density. http://www.conferenceharvester.com/

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of the addition of different probiotics to commercial diets for piglets on diet digestibility, total bacterial count (TBC) of faeces, Clostridium count and growth performance. In the digestibility assay, 24 entire male pigs with an average initial body weight of 18.8 ± 0.87 kg were housed individually in metabolism cages and distributed in a completely randomised experimental design; this consisted of three treatments (probiotic-free commercial feed; commercial feed with the addition of 0.2% probiotic containing a blend of microorganisms; commercial feed with the addition of 0.1% yeast-based probiotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii) and eight replicates. The digestibility of the feeds was determined. At the end of the experiment, 25 grams of faeces were collected for microbiological analysis. In the subsequent experiment, 150 crossbred piglets (entire males and females), weaned at 21 days of age and having an average initial body weight of 6.81 ± 0.71 kg were distributed in a randomised complete block design, with six treatments repeated twice in the first and thrice in the second block, totaling five replicates and five pigs per experimental unit. The treatments, arranged in a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement, consisted of a combination of the three experimental diets used in the digestibility test and two genders. The growth performance in the nursery was evaluated during the following phases: pre-starter I (21 to 29 days), pre-starter I and II (21 to 40 days) and the total period (21 to 63 days). There was an effect (p < 0.05) of the diets on the digestible protein and the logarithm of the TBC. There was no effect (p > 0.05) of the interaction or the diets on the growth performance of the pigs in any of the phases. Both in the entire experimental period and in the pre-starter I and II phases, male pigs presented better feed conversion (p < 0.05) than females. There was an improvement in the apparent digestibility of the crude protein of the feed when the pigs were fed commercial feed containing probiotics. Pigs fed commercial feed containing probiotics based on yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii presented a reduced TBC in their faeces. Commercial feed containing probiotics did not influence the growth performance parameters of nursery phase piglets.
