Minangkabaunese is the main local language originally used by Minangkabaunese people in West-Sumatera, Indonesia; it is one of local languages which belong to Malay language family. The native speakers of Minangkabaunese have been developing their cultural features, properties, and values in such a way that those may influence the forms and uses of the language. One aspect of cultural factors which can be directly seen is the fact that Minangkabaunese has the cultural-traditional style which is called in this paper as “bahasa pasambahan” (hence shortly called BP). The BP of Minangkabaunese is the stylistic forms and uses which are mostly influenced by the cultural-artistic forms and values developed by Minangkabaunese people. Consequently, BP sounds “more artistic” and more stylistic than formal and daily used styles. This paper, which is further derived and developed from a part of research result conducted in 2013 ‘Hibah Kompetensi’ (Jufrizal et.al., 2013), discusses the phenomena of BP whether it is the language style as a politeness strategy or just a stylistic language in Minangkabaunese. The data were collected through a field research and library study and the data were analyzed by means of the related theories of anthropological linguistics. The discussion and explanation on this topic give us opportunity to know and see deeply the interrelationship between language and culture, as a further verification on Sapir-Whorf hypothesis.

This study aimed to describe the use of figurative language and the structural strategies in Torajan oral literatures. The method used in this research was a qualitative research. This research was a literature research, thus it was done through reading-listening and noting. The research result showed that there were several figurative language in Torajan oral literatures, for instance, sarcasm structural strategy, the linking figurative of metonymy, and the comparison figurative of allegory in the story of Babuqsolong; the figurative of allegory, irony, and hyperbole in the story of Londorundum; and the figurative of personification and parallelism in the story of Bunga Alluq sola Dalitau. From the three, the story of Londorundum had the most used of figuratives language and structural strategies. The use of figurative language and structural strategies is one of the effort to the local languages preservation as well as supported the national cultural preservation as nation’s asset.

Minangkabaunese, a local language originally spoken by Minangkabaunese in West-Sumatera, has been typologically assigned as a nominative-accusative language (S = A, ≠ P) at syntactical level. Further typological studies on grammatical constructions, however, indicate that there are constructions which can be classified as the ergative-absolutive ones in this language. Thus, Minangkabaunese belongs to a neutral language, then. As a neutral language, it is assumed that this language has the constructions so called split-S and fluid-S. This paper, typologically discusses the grammatical properties of split-S and fluid-S in Minangkabaunese. The idea of this paper is derived and further developed based on a part of the research result conducted in 2013-2014. The data presented and discussed in this article were collected through a descriptive-qualitative research in the form the field research and library study. The analysis was based on the relevant theories of grammatical typology. The result of analysis tells that Minangkabaunese has the grammatical constructions which can be assigned as split-S and fluid-S. This typological discussion may add grammatical data and typological information into analyses on linguistic typology. Key word: Minangkabaunese, accusative, absoultive, split-S, fluid-S

Globalization synonymous with changes in all sociocultural aspects of human life, including languages. The use of local languages as a medium of communication shifted by the national language and English that became dominant. The local language seems to be a rare item, as it is not easy to find families who teach local languages to their children. Attempts to maintain the local language never stop. One of them is through writing. A number of writers in Bandung still write in Sundanese, although quantitatively, the readers are few. This study aims to reveal the motives of 8 writers produce writing in Sundanese and how their efforts to keep generating ideas for their writing. Based on the qualitative-phenomenology method used, this study reveals, the motives of the writers to produce works in Sundanese is the idealism as individuals born and raised in the Sundanese society. They feel they have a responsibility to maintain the existence of Sundanese in the community of native speakers. To keep writing on, they do not rely on personal experience as the idea. They also made an adaptation to the information technology by using social media to spread Sundanese language writings broadly.Keywords: globalization; Sundanese; Sundanese writer; idealism; social media; preservation.

<p>This study aims to find out the relation of language family and glottochronology of Gorontalo language and Atinggola language in Gorontalo Province. The research employed a comparative method, and the research instrument used a list of 200 basic Morris Swadesh vocabularies. The data source was from documents or gloss translation of 200 basic vocabularies and interview of two informants (speakers) of Gorontalo and Atinggola languages. Data analysis was done by using the lexicostatistic technique. The following indicators were used to determine the word family: (a) identical pairs, (b) the word pairs have phonemic correspondences, (c) phonetic similarities, and (d) a different phoneme. The results of data analysis reveal that there are 109 or 55.05% word pairs of the word family out of 200 basic vocabularies of Swadesh. The results of this study also show that the glottochronology of Gorontalo language and Atinggola language are (a) Gorontalo and Atinggola languages are one single language at 1.377 + 122 years ago, (b) Gorontalo and Atinggola languages are one single language at 1,449 - 1,255 years ago. This study concludes that (a) the relation of the kinship of these two languages is in the family group, (b) glottochronology (separation time between Gorontalo language and Atinggola language is between 1.4 to 1.2 thousand years ago or in the 12<sup>th</sup> – 14<sup>th </sup>century.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: relation, kinship level, local language, Gorontalo Province, lexicostatistics study</p>

The article is devoted to the formation of a linguistic interpretation of the interaction of language and culture of the Polish-Ukrainian border territories. The material for the analysis includes nomic systems of Ukrainian and Polish languages, which are considered as a cultural product of interpersonal and interethnic communication and an element of the language system, as well as invariant scientific theory created in the works of Polish onomastics (according to key theoretical concepts, tradition of analysis, and continuity in linguistic knowledge). The analysis performed in the article allows us to single out the linguistic indicators of the interaction of language and culture typical for the subject field of sociolinguistics. These are connections and concepts: language-territory, language-social strata, language-gender, language-ethnicity, social functions of the Polish language, and non-standardized spelling systems. Linguistic indicators reveal the peculiar mechanisms of the border in the historical memory and collective consciousness, marking the role of languages in these areas as a factor of space and cultural marker and bringing us closer to understanding the social relations of native speakers in the fifteenth-nineteenth centuries.

Sebuah cara alternatif untuk mengakomodasi masalah tersebut adalah dengan pengenalan bentuk onomatope. Onomatope menyediakan bermacam bunyi tiruan yang berbeda sebagai ikon lintas bahasa dan budaya untuk mengartikulasikan hal yang sama. Onomatope dapat berasal dari berbagai sumber, seperti komik, karikatur, novel, koran dan lain sebagainya. Onomatope dapat memberikan berbagai sudut pandang mengenai identitas kebahasaan dan kebudayaannya, setidaknya dalam bahasa Inggris, Indonesia, dan daerah.AbstrakTeaching English as a foreign language that is a representation of culture has some difficulties. One of the them comes from sounds recognition. An alternative way to accomodate the problem is by acknowledging an onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia provides several different kinds of imitative sound as a cross cultures and language icon to articulate the same thing. Its sources can be taken from comics, caricatures, novels, newspapers, and others. Onomatopoeia could give various perspective of its cultural and language identity in English, Indonesia, and local language.

Mixed methods research in developing countries has been increasing since the turn of the century. Given this, there is need to consolidate insights for future researchers. This article contributes to the methodological literature by exploring how cultural factors and logistical challenges in developing contexts interplay with mixed methods research design and implementation. Insights are based on the author’s research experience of using mixed methods in six projects across three African and three Caribbean countries. Three lessons are provided to aid researchers using mixed methods working in developing countries. First, cultural factors call for more reflexivity. Second, adopting a pragmatic research paradigm is necessary. And third, the research process should be iterative and adaptive.

AbstractThe present issue of „Zeitschrift für Germanistische Linguistik“ focuses on the relationship between language and culture on the one hand and linguistics and cultural analysis on the other hand.This introductory article unfolds some of the facets of these relationships in a programmatic way and outlines a concept of language which zooms in on the study of language as a cultural resource and communicating as a cultural practice. Besides discussing pertinent definitions of „culture“ by scholars of cultural anthropology, we shall examine possible impacts of these definitions on a cultural notion of language. Furthermore, we shall show affiliations to concepts of language and culture developed by Herder and Humboldt in the late 18th and early 19th century and reshaped by Cassirer in the beginning of the 20th century. The article will also look into recent developments inside and outside linguistics (especially Ethnography of Communication, Anthropological Linguistics and Interactional Sociology) to trace out grounds for a new perspective on linguistics as part of the interdisciplinary field of cultural studies.

Статья посвящена работе русских исследователей по изучению традиционной культуры Китая, которое началось в Пекинской духовной миссии и российском посольстве в Пекине и было продолжено русскими эмигрантами, оказавшимися в Китае в ходе Гражданской войны в России и после нее. Большой вклад в изучение этнографии Китая внес Иван Серебренников. Особенно важной является его работа, основанная на полевых исследованиях и интервью, об албазинцах, потомках русских первопроходцев. Очень многое в изучении Китая сделали русские дипломаты, служившие в российском посольстве в Пекине: Иван Коростовец, Яков Бранд, Николай Колесов и др. Этнографическими исследованиями в Китае, связанными часто с педагогической деятельностью, занимались и эмигранты из России: Сергей Широкогоров, Иван Гапанович, Сергей Полевой и др. Их многолетнее погружение в китайский язык и культуру создало благоприятные условия для исследований и принесло результаты в виде научных трудов, которые востребованы и сегодня. Они оказали влияние и на китайских деятелей науки и культуры, знакомя их с русскими методами исследований. К сожалению, до сего дня сохранилось не так много публикаций о традиционной культуре Китая, изданных на русском языке. Большое количество работ осталось в рукописях, которые хранятся в зарубежных собраниях, что делает их труднодоступными для российских исследователей. Основанная на материалах, выявленных в иностранных архивах и библиотеках, данная статья сообщает ранее неизвестные факты об изучении этнографии Китая русскими. This article is devoted to the work of Russian researchers on the traditional culture of China which began at the Beijing Theological Mission and the Russian Embassy in Beijing and was continued by Russian émigrés who ended up in China during and after the Civil War in Russia. Ivan Serebrennikov was one who made a great contribution to the study of the ethnography of China. Especially important is his work about the Albazinians, descendants of Russian pioneers, which was based on field research and interviews. Russian diplomats who served at the Russian Embassy in Beijing - Ivan Korostovets, Yakov Brand, Nikolai Kolesov and others - did a lot of research on China. Émigrés from Russia, often associated with pedagogical activity, also engaged in ethnographic rearch in China. These included: Sergei Shirokogorov, Ivan Gapanovich, Sergei Polevoy and others. They influenced Chinese cultural scientists, introducing them to Russian research methods. Their many years of immersion in Chinese language and culture produced valuable research that is still in demand today. Unfortunately, to this day there are not many works about the traditional culture of China published in Russian. A large number of works have remained in manuscript and are kept in foreign collections, which makes them difficult for Russian researchers to access. Based on material collected from foreign archives and libraries, this article reports on previously unknown material concerning the study of Chinese ethnography by Russians.

Introduction. One of the regions of compact settlement of the Mordovian people is the Republic of Bashkortostan. The Mordovian population of the region was formed during the resettlement migration process of the ethnic groups to the Bashkir lands in the 17th and early 20th centuries. There is a small stand-out group of Mordva-Erzya in Bashkiria. They call themselves Murza and they have their own identity. They live in the village of Kozhay-Andreevo in the Tuimazinskiy district and in the village of Kozhay-Maximovo in the Ermekeevskiy district. Materials and Methods. This work attempts to reconstruct the history of formation of the class community of Mordva-Murza and to identify its ethno-cultural features. The study is based on the principle of historicism; the main methods are historical-genetic, comparative-historical, and problematic-chronological. Results. Based on the study of published sources and literature, it is shown the chronology and the main stages of the formation of the Mordva-Murza community in Bashkiria. It was revealed, this community was formed on the basis of a resettlement group of the Mordovian sluzhilye-served people in the 18th century. Field ethnographic materials testify to their ethno-cultural identity. Discussion and Conclusion. Mordva living in the villages under consideration can be defined as a separate ethnic-class community, which has its own identity, self-name, specific linguistic and ethno-cultural characteristics. In their language and culture, it is interweaved both Erzya and Moksha traits. Almost disintegrated in the 1980s the community of the “Kazhay Murzas” began to revive in the year of 2000. The observations show the desire of the inhabitants and natives from these villages to preserve and develop their “Murza language” and traditions.
