During the last four years, information systems graduates participated in a practicum project during their last study year and took part in various professional activities in the industry in accordance with their professional aspirations and their desired specialty. The main purpose of this project was to reduce the gap between the graduates' acquired academic knowledge and the industry expectations. The aim of this chapter was to reveal the graduates' perceived contributions of the project. For that matter, semi-structured questionnaires and interviews with graduates who participated in the project in the last four years were conducted. The graduates experienced real workplace environments, acquired extended knowledge and skills, built social infrastructure to assist them with future job seeking, and above all gained real-world experience that helps them to build their professional image, and gain confidence in their traits and abilities. In addition, the practicum-based approach was compared with other common approaches used to bridge the gap, and its relative advantages and disadvantages were discussed.

In the context of reforming education in Ukraine, electronic systems for managing the learning process and web resources of educational disciplines as components of these systems are widely introduced into the educational process. The need to improve the quality of education and the effectiveness of monitoring the knowledge of applicants for higher education have led to an increase of interest in automated knowledge assessment. Laboratory classes play a leading role in developing skills and application of the acquired knowledge. The effectiveness of using computer technology in laboratory classes depends on the qualitative methodology for conducting them through the academic discipline web resource tools and the automated evaluation of learners’ knowledge and acquired skills. The paper justifies the relevance of automated assessment of students’ knowledge and skills for higher education, describes the methodology for conducting laboratory classes using the web resource tools of the academic discipline and the technology of automated knowledge and skills assessment based on the results of students’ laboratory assignments. The key idea of the proposed methodology is phased approach to the laboratory work implementation inside and outside the classroom through the academic discipline web resource tools, which includes the preparation manual and automatic access to the laboratory work, implementation and defence of laboratory work with the automated assessment of the corresponding reports. The technology of automated laboratory work assessment is understood as a technology of quality assessment in higher education. To determine whether the answer is correct the relevant algorithms have been incorporated into the web resources of the training course.

The scientific and technological revolution has made radical changes in all social and scientific systems, especially in pedagogical science. Technical and digital devices, as well as modern information and communication technology (ICT), have become an integral part of the teaching process and they represent an imperative of contemporary education. As a consequence of the mentioned informatization of the educational process, the idea of an innovative type of learning was created: e-learning which represents a way of acquiring knowledge and skills with the help and through educational and information and communication technology. The paper aims to study and to perform a theoretical analysis of the concept of e-learning in modern education. The paper gives a review of the concept of e-learning, as well as an analysis of the basic types or modalities, advantages and disadvantages of this type of learning. The occurrence of e-learning has enabled the transition from the process of reproduction to the process of building and upgrading the necessary knowledge and skills, thus overcoming the limits of tradicional teaching and realizing the ideas of active and lifelong learning. The student takes a central and key role in teaching, where teaching contents are presented in a creative and interactive way through modern technology and where the student acquires necessary competencies for living and working in modern society. The significance and implications of the conducted theoretical research are reflected in emphasizing the importance of the existence of e-learning modalities in teaching practice, which creates the prerequisites for quality and contemporary education. Elearning represents the future of pedagogical science and it is important to work on further popularization and research of this educational phenomenon.

The article is devoted to the issue of using open geographic information systems in training of the students majoring in «Computer Sciences» particularly in the framework of «Geographic information systems» discipline. The objectives, the task and the place of "Geographic information systems" discipline in the system of training the students of IT specialties have been determined. The analysis of curricula of several domestic higher education institutions that provide training in computer sciences has shown the prevailing orientation of using the proprietary geoinformation systems and technologies in the educational process. In the authors’ opinion, it sufficiently narrows the didactic potential of the «Geographic information systems» discipline reducing the level of its information saturation. It is proposed to use open geo-information systems in the learning process, which will create conditions for more qualitative and productive students’ understanding of creation, operation and implementation of geo-information systems to address real-world applied issues. A comparative analysis of the most worldwide open-source desktop geographic information systems has been conducted in order to identify their potential for the use of training. The directions of using open geo-information systems from the point of view of organizational process as well as from the perspective of training efficiency are described. The advantages and disadvantages of leveraging open geographic information systems, namely: QGIS, GRASS GIS, Whitebox GAT, Saga GIS, gvSiG, ILWIS, uDIG, MapWindow GIS for the teaching of the «Geographic Information Systems» discipline have been determined. The authors recommend to use such open geographic information systems as uDIG, QGIS, Whitebox GAT in the teaching of the university discipline at the start of educational courses; the choice of geographic information systems for senior students is limited solely to the goals and objectives set by the university teachers to future professionals in computer sciences.

In 2013, the Regulation on Distance Learning came into force, probably then no one could have imagined that distance learning would be as popular around the world as it is now. In general, the purpose of developing distance education was to provide the opportunity to receive education in another city or country, but without the direct presence of a person, presence only in the most necessary circumstances, including state exams, thesis defense, and so on. Apropos, even before 2013, distance learning was used in the most famous institutions of higher education in the world. The present is impossible to imagine without distance learning. What has only recently become an isolated phenomenon has become widespread. But at the same time there is a problem of how to effectively organize the educational process using distance learning technologies. The solution to this problem is to use an educational platform, in particular, the Moodle platform. The creation of courses on the Moodle platform with a description of the main stages is characterized. The possibilities of the Moodle educational platform are described and the developed distance courses on the Moodle platform are presented, in particular "Computer networks and the Internet", "Computer graphics and design of polygraphic editions", "Computer design and multimedia", "Programming Internet-oriented applications", which consist of such sections as instructional, which also contains a chat and a forum, lectures, laboratory (practical) works, independent work, modular control work, exam, individual training. The advantages and disadvantages of using distance learning are presented.

The article deals with a relevant issue of studying the didactic potential of electronic textbooks, which has become particularly timely in the context of significant challenges to the education system caused by the pandemic. Contemporary scholars note that current educational practice is well ahead of the development of scientifically sound patterns and conditions for the formation and functioning of the components of the didactic system of e-learning. The purpose of the article is to analyze the positive and negative aspects of the implementation of the didactic principle of systematization and continuity in electronic textbooks. According to the research aim advantages and disadvantages of using electronic textbooks, in particular in of realization didactic principle of systematization and continuity are analyzed in the paper. It was found, that the expanded capacity of electronic textbooks will not only allow to implement that principle on the qualitatively new level but at the same time increase the didactic risks of their realization. The requirements for electronic textbooks, which will allow to minimize didactic risks and prevent potential negative impact on the educational process are formulated. While designing an e-textbook it is necessary to follow the sequence of presentation of educational material in a systematic and structured form and take into account the purpose, tasks, competencies to be formed and specific of a particular subject. Authors should take into account the retrospective and prospective relations of the educational material in order to ensure continuity in the acquisition of knowledge and skills. It is recommended to adhere to the general conceptual framework, use unified terminology, avoid duplication of educational material, methodically unsound hyperlinks, because the abuse both external and internal hyperlinks distracts from the main course of material presentation.
