The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the young population continues to rise. This study aimed to determine whether adipokines are significant markers in defining MetS in a pediatric population and to assess the effect of a hypocaloric diet and physical activity on serum concentrations of adiponectin, leptin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). A prospective study was conducted over a period of 1 year, between January and December 2015, on 66 cases of obesity in children diagnosed at the Louis Turcanu Emergency Hospital for Children in Timisoara, Romania. The patients diagnosed with MetS were put on diet and physical exercise for 3 months. MetS was present in 63.6 % of obese children. There was a significant and positive correlation between MetS and both leptin and hs-CRP and a significant, negative correlation between MetS and adiponectin. After diet and physical activity, 3 patients no longer met the criteria for MetS. Leptin, adiponectin and hs-CRP concentrations statistically improved after a three-month diet and physical activity program. In conclusion, hs-CRP, leptin and adiponectin can be used as predictors of cardiovascular risk in the pediatric population. Diet and physical activity have an impact on metabolic status.

Abstract Background Obesity is a chronic inflammatory disorder in which leptin, adiponectin and C-reactive protein (CRP) play an important role. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between markers of adiposity such as leptin, adiponectin and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in obese children, and to determine whether these adipokines are significant markers in defining metabolic syndrome (MetS) in pediatric population. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted over a period of 1 year, between July 2013 and June 2014, on 122 cases of obesity in children diagnosed at the Louis Ţurcanu Emergency Hospital for Children Timişoara, in the departments of Diabetes and Nutritional Diseases, Endocrinology and Cardiology. The patients were divided into two groups, according to the presence of MetS. Results MetS was present in 27% of obese children. The groups were homogenous with respect to age, sex and body mass index (BMI). Adiponectin, leptin and hs-CRP were significantly modified in the group with MetS (p=0.04, p=0.04, p=0.01, respectively). Conclusions hs-CRP, leptin and adiponectin can be used as predictors of cardiovascular risk in pediatric population.

Abstract Background There are limited number of studies with controversial findings regarding the association between anemia at admission and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes. Therefore, in this research, we aimed to investigate the prospective association between anemia and COVID-19 outcomes in hospitalized patients in Iran. Methods In this prospective study, the data of 1274 consecutive patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 were statistically analyzed. All biomarkers, including hemoglobin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were measured using standard methods. Anemia was defined as a hemoglobin (Hb) concentration of less than 13 g/dL and 12 g/dL in males and females, respectively. Assessing the association between anemia and COVID-19 survival in hospitalized patients was our primary endpoint. Results The mean age of the participants was 64.43 ± 17.16 years, out of whom 615 (48.27%) were anemic subjects. Patients with anemia were significantly older (P = 0.02) and had a higher frequency of cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes, and cancer (P < 0.05). The frequency of death (anemic: 23.9% vs. nonanemic: 13.8%), ICU admission (anemic: 27.8% vs. nonanemic:14.71%), and ventilator requirement (anemic: 35.93% vs. nonanemic: 20.63%) were significantly higher in anemic patients than in nonanemic patients (P < 0.001). According to the results of regression analysis, after adjusting for significant covariate in the univariable model, anemia was independently associated with mortality (OR: 1.68, 95% CI: 1.10, 2.57, P = 0.01), ventilator requirement (OR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.54, P = 0.004), and the risk of ICU admission (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.46, 2.90, P < 0.001). Conclusion The prevalence of anemia in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was high and was associated with poor outcomes of COVID-19.

Aim: To explore the association of circulating miRNAs with adiposity, metabolic status and inflammatory biomarkers in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Patients & methods: Serum levels of 372 miRNAs were measured in patients with (n = 6) and without MetS (n = 6) by quantitative PCR array, and dysregulated miRNAs were validated in a larger cohort (MetS, n = 89; non-MetS, n = 144). Results: In the screening study, seven miRNAs were dysregulated in patients with MetS, and miR-421 remained increased in the validation study. miR-421 was associated with a high risk of MetS and insulin resistance and hypertension and correlated with glycated hemoglobin, triacylglycerols, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, IL-6, resistin and adiponectin (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Circulating miR-421 is a potential biomarker for insulin resistance, metabolic dysregulation and inflammatory status in patients with MetS.

<p>Proses penuaan mempengaruhi peningkatan distribusi lemak abdominal dengan indikator lingkar pinggang (LP) dan rasio lingkar pinggang panggul (RLPP). Penimbunan lemak abdominal menyebabkan disfungsi jaringan adiposa sehingga mempengaruhi biomarker proinflamasi yaitu kadar serum <em>high-sensitivity C-reactive Protein</em> (hs-CRP). Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan LP dan RLPP dengan kadar hs-CRP lansia wanita. Rancangan penelitian <em>cross sectional</em> pada 53 subjek dipilih secara <em>consecutive sampling</em>. Antropometri yang diukur adalah LP dan RLPP. Pengukuran kadar serum hs-CRP dianalisis dengan metode <em>enyme-linked immunosorbent assay</em> (ELISA). Wawancara yang dilakukan yaitu data diri, asupan, aktivitas fisik, dan riwayat konsumsi obat. Data asupan diperoleh dengan metode <em>food recall</em> 3x24 jam. Aktivitas fisik diperoleh menggunakan <em>International Physical Activity Questionnaire</em> (IPAQ). Analisis data digunakan uji korelasi <em>Spearman</em>. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persentase LP pada lansia wanita yang berisiko sebesar 90,6%, RLPP yang berisiko sebesar 98,1%, dan kadar hs-CRP tinggi sebesar 30,2%. Terdapat hubungan positif antara LP dengan kadar serum hs-CRP (r=0,417 ; p=0,002). Dalam penelitian ini RLPP, aktivitas fisik, asupan energi, karbohidrat, protein, lemak, serat, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D,vitamin E, dan selenium tidak berkorelasi dengan kadar hs-CRP. Simpulan penelitian ini adalah LP berkorelasi positif dengan kadar serum hs-CRP, namun RLPP tidak berkorelasi dengan kadar serum hs-CRP</p>

Evidence supports the association of some non-conventional or yet to be established risk factors (RFs), such as serum uric acid (UA) or high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), with the risk of arterial hypertension (HTN), metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease and a worse prognosis in patients with known coronary vascular disease (CVD). However, there is no evidence from randomized controlled trials to support their use in guiding therapy. In the secondary prevention setting, detection of peripheral vascular damage and kidney dysfunction may provide significant additional prognostic implications.

Abstract BACKGROUND Most previous studies regarding chronic inflammation and risk of myocardial infarction (MI) have lacked repeated measures of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and/or white blood cell (WBC) count over time. We examined whether cumulative average and longitudinal changes in these biomarkers were associated with subsequent MI risk. METHODS In this prospective, community-based study, we included 82544 Chinese participants [66796 men and 15748 women; mean (SD) age 55.1 (9.86) y] without prior cardiovascular diseases or cancer at baseline (2006–2007). hs-CRP, WBC and other clinical covariates were assessed at baseline and every 2 years during follow-up. RESULTS During 6 years of follow-up (2006–2012), we documented 714 incident MI cases. Higher baseline and cumulative average concentrations of hs-CRP and/or WBC were consistently associated with increased risk of MI (Ptrend &lt;0.001 for both). Longitudinal increase in hs-CRP (Ptrend &lt;0.001), but not WBC, was also associated with a higher future risk of MI, after adjustment for their baseline values and other covariates. Each 1-mg/L increment per year in hs-CRP was associated with a 9.3% increase in risk for future MI [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.09, 95% CI, 1.03; 1.17]. Participants with high-grade inflammatory status (hs-CRP ≥10 mg/L and WBC ≥10 × 109/L) had a higher risk of MI occurring &lt;3 months after hs-CRP/WBC assessments vs those with hs-CRP &lt;0.5 mg/L and WBC &lt;5 × 109/L (HR = 6.64; 95% CI, 1.49–29.6), as compared with MI occurring ≥4 years (HR = 2.95; 95% CI, 0.90, 9.65). CONCLUSIONS Plasma hs-CRP concentration and WBC predicted MI risk. Longitudinal increase in hs-CRP was also associated with a higher risk of MI.

This Finnish population-based study, mean age 46 years, evaluates the association of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), and adiponectin with the NCEP and IDF definitions of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Adiponectin levels were higher, hs-CRP and IL-1Ra levels lower in subjects without MetS compared to subjects with MetS. If MetS was present according to both IDF and NCEP criteria, BMI, waist, triglycerides, hs-CRP, and IL-1Ra were significantly higher compared to subjects who had MetS according to either only IDF or only NCEP criteria. The hs-CRP, IL-1Ra, and adiponectin linearly correlated with the number of the components of MetS according to both definitions. Decreased levels of adiponectin and increased levels of hs-CRP and IL-1Ra are tightly associated with the components of MetS. Individuals who had MetS according to both criteria had the most adverse changes in cardiovascular risk factors.

ObjectiveWe intend to assess the utility of the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) as a marker of cardiovascular risk in obese children and adolescents.MethodsThe study included children and adolescents between 6 and 18 years of age with a body mass index (BMI) higher than 2 SDS. All the patients had their blood pressure taken and hs-CRP, hepatic function, lipid profile and uric acid were determined after 12 h of fasting. Likewise, an oral glucose tolerance test was performed, determining basal glucose and insulin levels, and after stimulus. We considered the presence of metabolic syndrome when the obese children and teenagers showed at least two of the following conditions: decreased high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension or alteration in glucose metabolism.ResultsOut of the 115 obese children studied, 24% showed signs of metabolic syndrome. Those with metabolic syndrome presented higher levels of hs-CRP (mean: 3.8 mg/l; 95% CI: 2.8–4.8) in comparison with the obese patients who did not show signs of metabolic syndrome (mean: 2 mg/l; 95% CI: 1.5–2.5). After a multivariate analysis, the variables that appear to influence the changes in hs-CRP were BMI, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol levels.ConclusionThe hs-CRP is a useful tool for early diagnosis of cardiovascular risk in obese children and teenagers.

Aim: To examine the correlation between inflammatory biomarkers and plasma β-carotene levels in children. Methods: A total of 564 Spanish schoolchildren aged 9-12 were observed and studied. Plasma β-carotene levels were assessed by HPLC. A β-carotene level <4.83 µg/dL (0.09 µmol/L) was considered deficient. Plasma tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured by immunoenzyme assays. Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) was tested by immunonephelometry. Results: Subjects who were β-carotene-deficient (23.1% of the studied children) had higher IL-6 levels than subjects with normal β-carotene concentrations. The log-IL-6 and log-hs-CRP concentrations, but not the log-TNF-α level, were strongly and inversely related to the plasma log-β-carotene level (taking into account log-age, energy intake, log-triglycerides, gender, log-body mass index, log-β-carotene intake, energy from lipids and cholesterol as covariables). When the 3 inflammatory biomarkers were introduced into the regression model along with the corresponding covariables, only the log-IL-6 level was related to the plasma log-β-carotene level (β = -0.505 ± 0.078; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Inflammatory status, in particular IL-6 levels, appears to be negatively associated with plasma β-carotene levels in schoolchildren.
