Background. Scientific research has demonstrated that microbial pathogens could develop resistance to multiple antibacterial agents. Food additives, in particular preservatives, have also been shown to increase antimicrobial resistance of food-contaminating microorganisms. In this work the lantibiotic nisin was shown to exhibit: it contributes to the development of the antibiotic resistance of pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms, reduces the immune status, the development of an imbalance of intestinal microbiocenosis, affects the body’s metabolism through the regulation of DNA transcription.Purpose. To assess the risks of nisin (E234) use taking into account its impact on the biological properties of microorganisms-food contaminants.Material and methods. Calculation of nisin consumption with food under conditions of scenarios 1 and 2 was carried out taking into account the bodyweight of consumers of different age groups in the Russian population in the software Exel. The analysis of scientific data on the biological properties of nisin, including the ability to form to the resistance of microorganisms was provided. Results and conclusion. For the first time, the calculated amounts of the food additive-preservative nisin (E234) in the intestinal contents were shown to exceed the minimum inhibitory concentrations of nisin for representatives of the normal flora of the human gastrointestinal tract in consumers of all ages by from 40 to 27064 times, depending on the consumption scenario (with minimum and maximum exposure levels). It has been argued that the safety of nisin used as a food additive needs to be re-assessed taking into account its considerable contribution to the antimicrobial resistance of food pathogens.

New scientific data on the modern epizootic situation on helminthoses of sheep of the breed Edilbayevskaya introduced on the territory of Altai region are provided. To study the contamination of animals with helminths, ovoliroscopic methods commonly used in parasitology were applied. In total 889 fecal samples received from sheep of different gender and age groups are investigated. Gelminthocomplex of animals is characterized by a variety. Tapeworms include parasites of the suborder Anoplocephalata, the family Anoplocephalidae, the genus Moniezia (M. brodeni, M. expanza) and the family Avitellinidae of the genus Thysaniezia (Thysaniezia giardi). Roundworms belong to the Strongylata suborder and are represented by 4 genera nematodes – Nematodirus, Ostertagia, Hemonchus, Oesophagostomum. The infection of lambs with helminths, including Nematodirus spp. and Moniezia spp. in 1.6–3.8 times more than at adult animals also makes respectively 48.1; 42.9 and 15.8%. A distinction of the sheep hermitage of the breed Edilbaevskaya is the low level of infection of animals with strangulates of the gastrointestinal tract, including esophagostomies (0.19%), ostertagies (1.3%), and hemones (0.2%). The dominating and subdominating components of helminthocomplex are Nematodirus spp. and Moniezia spp. For the first time the Skrjabinema ovis is registered in territory of Altai region.

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is widespread worldwide in different types of animal species and as a zoonosis takes a great risk for human health not only as a food toxicoinfection, but also as a highly resistant pathogen causing serious soft tissue infectious, septicaemia and even death. One of the most affected food-producing animal species is swine in the production of which new antibiotics in big amounts are used more and more continuously, increasing antimicrobial resistance. In this study several commercial pig farms and pigs with different age groups as well as farm workers and samples from environment were examined with the purpose of detecting MRSA prevalence and evaluating antimicrobial resistance. A total of 85 isolated MRSA strains were characterised by conventional microbial and molecular methods. MRSA was found in all farms. MRSA prevalence in different pig age groups and farms varied from none to 79.2% reaching higher values among 3–3.5 (26.6%) and 4–4.5 (31.9%) old pigs. The 98.7% of 74 further investigated MRSA isolates were resistant to penicillin, 94.9% to tetracycline, 45.6% to cephalexin and 10 different spa types were found among which spa type t011 was the most widespread. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time MRSA was researched in sow milk and the first description of the presence of MRSA in several age groups of pigs in Latvia.

An emerging crisis of antibiotic resistance for microbial pathogens is alarming all the nations, posing a global threat to human health. The production of the metallo-β-lactamase enzyme is the most powerful strategy of bacteria to produce resistance. An efficient way to combat this global health threat is the development of broad/non-specific type of metallo-β-lactamase inhibitors, which can inhibit the different isoforms of the enzyme. Till date, there are no clinically active drugs against metallo- β-lactamase. The lack of efficient drug molecules against MBLs carrying bacteria requires continuous research efforts to overcome the problem of multidrug-resistance bacteria. The present review will discuss the clinically potent molecules against different variants of B1 metallo-β-lactamase.

Aim: The micellization behavior of cationic surfactants have been studied in the presence of food additives. Objectives: Micellization behaviour of cationic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) has been studied in water and in various concentrations of salts (food additives) L-glutamic acid, sodium propionate, sodium citrate tribasic dihydrate and disodium tartrate dihydrate at (298.15, 308.15 and 318.15) K. Methods: Two methods used in the present study are specific conductance measurements and spectroscopy (NMR) studies. Results: From the specific conductance(κ), various parameters such as critical micelle concentration (CMC), degree of ionization of micelle (α), standard Gibbs free energy (ΔGom), enthalpy (ΔHom), and entropy (ΔSom) of micellization have also been calculated. Thermodynamic parameters related to the micellization process were also analyzed through NMR studies. Conclusion: The CMC values are influenced by the presence of food additive. The magnitude of CMC values increase with increase in concentration of food additive. In all the cases, enthalpy of micellization, ∆Hom values are found to be negative whereas entropy of micellization, ∆S om values are positive which indicate that hydrophobic interactions play a major role in the micellization process. Also, NMR studies reveal that tartrate and citrate are more hydrated than glutamic acid and propionate, resulting in more downfield shift.

Many halophytes have great nutritional and functional potential, providing chemical compounds with biological properties. Salicornia patula Duval-Jouve is a common euhalophyte from saline Mediterranean territories (Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy). In the present work we quantified for the first time the bioactive compounds in S. patula (total phenolic compounds and fatty acids), from Iberian Peninsula localities: littoral-coastal Tinto River basin areas (southwest Spain, the Huelva province), and mainland continental territories (northwest and central Spain, the Valladolid and Madrid provinces). Five phenolic acids including caffeic, coumaric, veratric, salicylic, and transcinnamic have been found with differences between mainland and coastal saltmarshes. S. patula contain four flavonoids: quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, kaempferol/luteolin, apigenin 7-glucoside, and pelargonidin-3-O-rutinoside. These last two glycosylated compounds are described for the first time in this genus of Chenopodiaceae. The fatty acid profile described in S. patula stems contains palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids in high concentrations, while stearic and long-chain fatty acids were detected in low amounts. These new findings confirm that S. patula is a valuable source of bioactive compounds from Mediterranean area.

AbstractThis study was carried out to determine some bioecological characteristics of Mastacembelus mastacembelus, which is the only species of Mastacembelidae family living in Turkey. Fish samples were caught between 2014–2018 from Keban Dam Lake, one of the most important reservoirs of the upper Euphrates Basin. In totally, 348 Mastacembelus mastacembelus individuals were examined, including 178 males and 170 females. The age distributions were defined between the I–XV age groups. Total lengths ranged from 14.20 to 81.80 cm in males and from 15.60 to 77.30 cm in females. Total length–weight relationships were calculated as W = 0.0083 × TL2.6516 for males, W = 0.0043 × TL2.8310 for females and W = 0.0063 × TL2.7256 for all population, and the growth type was estimated as “negative allometric”. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for all individuals were computed as L∞ = 90.99, k = 0.13, t0 = − 0.45. The total (Z), natural (M), fishing (F) mortality rates and exploitation rate (E) were estimated as Z = 0.313, M = 0.270, F = 0.043 and E = 0.137, respectively. The length at first capture (Lc) was found as 50.72. The optimum, maximum and economic yields were calculated as E0.5 = 0.361; Emax = 0.776; E0.1 = 0.664, respectively.

Abstract Background An estimated 12% of women experience ≥ 1 episode of urinary tract infection (UTI) annually. Incidence is bimodal, with peaks occurring in young, sexually active women (18–24 years) and in post-menopausal women. Previous studies suggest the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in UTI is rising; however recent AMR data for community-acquired UTI are lacking. We estimated the prevalence of AMR among US females with outpatient UTI in 2011–2019, stratified by age. Methods A retrospective, multicenter, cohort study of AMR among non-duplicate urine isolates in US females (≥ 12 years of age) from 296 institutions from 2011–2019 (BD Insights Research Database, Franklin Lakes, NJ). Phenotypes examined for Enterobacterales (ENT) were: extended spectrum β-lactamase positive (ESBL+; determined by commercial panels or intermediate/resistant to ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, ceftazidime or cefepime); nitrofurantoin (NFT) not-susceptible (NS); fluoroquinolone (FQ) NS; trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) NS; and NS to ≥ 2 or ≥ 3 drug classes (including ESBL+). Gram-positive phenotypes were, methicillin resistant S. aureus and S. saprophyticus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus. Isolates were stratified by patient age (≥ 12 to < 18, ≥ 18 to < 55, ≥ 55 to < 65, ≥ 65 to < 75, ≥ 75 years). Chi-square tests were used to evaluate AMR difference between groups. Results In total, urine isolates were collected from 106 to 296 (2011–2019) US sites. Overall, the prevalence of antimicrobial NS increased with age for all E. coli phenotypes (all P< 0.001; Table 1), and for non-E. coli ENT (all P< 0.001), except NFT NS, which decreased from 70.6% to 59.7% (P=0.002; Table 2). The greatest difference between age groups in prevalence of resistance was observed for FQ NS E.coli: 5.8% (≥ 12 to < 18 years) vs 34.5% (≥ 75 years). For the multi-drug resistant E. coli phenotypes, resistance increased with age, ranging from 4.8–22.4% and 0.9–6.5% for ≥ 2 and ≥ 3 drug NS, respectively. Overall, the prevalence of resistance for Gram-positive phenotypes increased with age (all P< 0.001; Table 3). Table 1. Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among E. coli isolates in US females with outpatient UTI by age group. Table 2. Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among non-E. coli ENT isolates in US females with outpatient UTI by age group. Table 3. Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among Gram-positive isolates in US females with outpatient UTI by age group. Conclusion The prevalence of AMR in E. coli and non-E. coli ENT increased with age among US females presenting for care in the outpatient setting overall. A similar trend increase by age is also seen in Gram-positive isolates. Disclosures Vikas Gupta, PharmD, BCPS, Becton, Dickinson and Company (Employee, Shareholder)GlaxoSmithKline plc. Although Ablepharus kitaibelii and its subspecies are wide-spread, being distributed from the Carpathian Basin through the Balkans to Iraq, their habitat and environmental niche is poorly known. Ablepharus kitaibelii fitzingeri is almost entirely limited to the Carpathian Basin, and is amongst the most strictly protected and least known reptiles of Central and Eastern Europe. The main aim of our study was to determine habitat use preferences of different age groups of A. kitaibelii fitzingeri and Lacerta viridis. The occurrence of green lizard was determined by the abundance of refugia rather than by the naturalness of grasslands. The snake-eyed skink prefers semi-natural grasslands with abundant tussock-forming grass or sedge species, avoiding densely shrubby places. For the first time, we show that woodland mosaics lacking shrubs and temporary grasslands next to forest edges are important for the species. Microhabitat use by snake-eyed skink varies with age group; adults preferring shady edge zones rich in leaf litter and shadier grassland spots provided by woodland mosaics, whereas juveniles were found in natural, more open grasslands far from forest edges and in woodland mosaics with dense shrubby understory. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the ecological needs of A. kitaibelii fitzingeri. Our methodology could be adapted to other species and subspecies of Ablepharus. Based on our results, it is important to reconsider habitat management activities, which should not be limited to shrub control: the main goal should be the development of a diverse habitat structure.

Comparative evaluation of the effectiveness of antioxidant and hepatoprotective action of food additives which obtained from grape pomace white varieties for various technologies, was carried out in experiments on laboratory animals. It is established that the food additive “Grape Powder” (GP), obtained from the pomace of white grape varieties by the developed technology, allows, in comparison with the control sample of the food additive, to reduce the content of lipid peroxidation products in the serum to a greater extent – Malon dialdehyde, diene conjugates and ketodienes, which indicates a higher efficiency of antioxidant action of GP on the organism of animals, due to the high content of micronutrients with antioxidant properties. The additive GP shows a higher efficiency of hepatoprotective action, which consists in a significant reduction in the level of alanine aminotransferase activity in the blood serum, compared to the control sample of the additive.

The aims of this study were firstly to examine whether there was an observed relative age effect in the cardiorespiratory fitness scores of 9-10 and 11-12 year old children, and secondly whether any observed effect was maintained after controlling for somatic maturity. Cardiorespiratory fitness data from 11,404 children aged 9-10 years and 3,911 children aged 11-12 years were obtained from a large cross-sectional field-based fitness testing program. A one-way ANOVA revealed a statistically significant relative age effect (p < .01) existed in the 20mSRT scores across all the age groups. Furthermore, ANCOVA analyses identified a statistically significant relative age effect was maintained after controlling for somatic maturation (p < .05). From a public health perspective these results confirm the existence of relative age effects for the first time and consequently may hold implications for relatively younger children in the accurate assessment of their cardiorespiratory fitness scores.
