This research focuses on how ambivalence works within the case of a Surabaya born singer, Wieteke Van Dort through her song Geef Mij Maar Nasi Goreng. The colonial power that lasted the longest time in today Indonesia was the Dutch administration. The Dutch people living in this area, experienced ambivalence, as the result of the challenging condition and the process of adaption where it was completely enigma to the condition of the motherland. Therefore, this study is conducted as a challenge to dichotomy of western vs eastern division in which extremely opposes each other. This research was descriptive qualitative in nature. The theory of ambivalence proposed by Homi Bhabha was used as an underlying theory. Postcolonial approach was also applied in analyzing Wieteke Van Dort’s ambivalence. The data were in the form of lyrics of a song entitled Geef Mij Maar Nasi Goreng.  The research findings prove that through the lyrics of Geef Mij Maar Nasi Goreng, Wieteke Van Dort experiences ambivalence through her complex feeling in being attracted to her “native” Surabaya and her repulsion on the inferior Javanese culture. The research also shows that the western people, through the life of Wieteke Van Dort through her song Geef Mij Maar Nasi Goreng, experience ambivalence. It challenges the notion of nativeness in a sense that Wieteke Van Dort, as a native of Surabaya by birth, is ironically rejected by the other natives because of the judgment by blood. Western people, represented by Wieteke Van Dort, truly experience ambivalence.

At the recent CLTA-S2 conference, a spirited debate occurred between critics of second language acquisition (SLA) research and researchers who embraced it. Fascinating as it was, neither camp appeared to have convinced the other, but, more important, the debate left much of the audience flummoxed. In this paper, I intend to provide a follow-up, attempting to clarify a) the relationship between research and teaching in the context of Chinese as a second language (CSL), b) misunderstandings on the part of critics over research findings, and c) potential pitfalls in interpreting the SLA literature. My goal is to encourage, as well as contribute to, further communication between the two camps, for the ultimate good of CSL instruction and learning.

Alexis Wright's second novel, Carpentaria, received critical acclaim upon its publication by Giramondo in 2006. As the recipient of the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2007, Carpentaria cemented Wright's position as the country's foremost Indigenous novelist. This article places Carpentaria within contemporary discussions of “big, ambitious novels” by contemporary women novelists by examining the ways the novel simultaneously invites and resists its inclusion into an established canon of “great Australian novels” (GANs). While critics have been quick to celebrate the formal innovations of Carpentaria as what makes it worthy of GAN status, the novel nevertheless opposes the integrationist and homogenizing myths that accompany canonization. Therefore, the article finds that Wright's vision of a future Australia involves moments of antagonism and mutual understanding between white settler and Indigenous communities. This article uses the work of Homi Bhabha to argue that Carpentaria demonstrates the emergence of a third space wherein negotiation between these two cultures produces knowledge that is “new, neither the one nor the other.” In so doing, Wright shows the resilience of Indigenous knowledge even as it is subject to transformation upon contact with contradictory ideological and epistemological frameworks.
