(Un)Making Community

Chapter two challenges the traditional narrative that the close-knit rural ‘community’ was swept away by inevitable modernization processes in postwar society. Instead, it demonstrates that the villagers had a much more ambivalent stance towards ‘community’ than often assumed. Analysing the interviewees’ multilayered narratives of the disappearance of the village community, the chapter shows that local residents in both villages increasingly abandoned traditional social networks but instantly lamented their demise when they disappeared from their lives. In the booming and affluent Ebersbach, locals gradually retreated into privacy and withdrew from traditional social spaces in the village, but at the same time began to mourn their loss. In the East, villagers shared this desire for privacy, but the numerous problems of life in a shortage economy made it necessary for them to maintain a range of support networks. Once this pragmatic community unravelled after reunification, the Neukirchers too began to long for the village community of the past which they had just left behind. The chapter thus shows that despite very different circumstances on both sides of the Wall, Germans in East and West shared an ambivalent attitude towards community and redefined communal relationships in the village in similar ways.

This paper analyses the contemporary structure and functioning of Dagestan’s rural communities in a context of internal Russian migration, particularly to the cities of Western Siberia. The concepts of transnationalism and translocality are deployed as a theoretical framework to analyse the migrant and his social world without detaching ourselves from the donor community, the djamaat. It is argued that the Dagestan rural community, in the course of the migration processes of recent decades, can no longer be viewed merely as a local social entity. A new translocal community has emerged, organized on the principle of the 'Global Village', that consists of migrants, their family members and non-migrants remaining in the home villages. Translocal migrants, existing simultaneously in several geographically separated points, continue to construct their identity and their social networks, a process that fosters a sense of belonging to a Dagestani village. The donor rural community is an important space where migrants can demonstrate personal successes and new entrepreneurial and philanthropic economic activities. Migrants invest not only in their own households but also help their native villages as a whole through entrepreneurial activity and financial support. In addition, the key moments of life remain rooted in the village. Migrants prefer to find a marriage partner from their home village. The home village is also seen to be the only acceptable burial place for deceased migrants. A major role in the consolidation of a translocal djamaat is played by Internet resources such as social networks and messenger programmes, which construct social networks and maintain communication among fellow countrymen in real time. This preference for preserving ties to one’s rural locality even after resettlement out of the village and the Republic of Dagestan, as well as the maintenance of translocal links, allow us to speak of a new social entity: the translocal community.

The uproar on Law Number 6 of 2014 on Village (Village Law) is currently more focused on the issues of village funds. Democracy, which is actually the spirit of the Village Law, does not get much attention. The spirit promoted by the Village Law is paving the way for democracy at the village level after in the past, villages were more often positioned as a sub-ordination of development programs. Rural communities need to be given proper understanding of democracy and the courage to participate so that the goals of community empowerment contained in the Village Law are immediately achieved. The method used in this activity consists of several stages: (1) survey; (2) module making; (3) socialization; (4) mentoring; (5) evaluation. Participants in the activity were: village officials, heads of RT and RW, village heads and community leaders. The results of the activity indicated that after socialization and mentoring: (1) the knowledge and awareness of participants regarding democratic rights, especially those related to the Village Law, increases; (2) Participants have the courage and the skills to convey their aspirations in each discussion forum in the village; (3) The Village Development Work Plan (RKPDes) proposed as a condition for the Village Funds, was made entirely involving community participation so that the programs were expected to be more in line with the needs of the village community, because they were captured from the aspirations of the community.

Abstract This study aims to examine 3 elements of social capital, namely mutual trust (trust), network (network), and reciprocal relationships (reciprocal) in the development of Community Forests (HKm). The qualitative descriptive method was carried out as a research approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis used is qualitative, data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results showed that the level of public trust in general, both supported by cooperation between communities, trust between members of farmer groups, farmer groups with other farmer groups, and farmer groups with the government was well established because they always believed in each other that all parties, both the community, government, and other agencies work together to bring about the development of HKm in their villages. The social network that is intertwined in the village community is well established. In addition to being motivated by kinship, communication and mutual understanding are also strong factors in social networks in the village, namely social networks in community economic activities have reaped an increase in marketing. Social networks in environmental activities are proven by the willingness of farmer groups to receive information related to forest management. Social networking in community activities is proven by the enthusiasm of the village community in participating in training held by the government. The mutual benefits that exist between the parties can be seen in the benefits received by each party, both the community, government and NGOs, and other supporting institutions.

This article aims to explain the field findings related to the socio-economic conditions of the community in Beji village. The village was known as the base of the santri and the socio-economic impacts that provide value to the life of the community around the pesantren. The research used a qualitative method with a constructivism approach. Excavation of data through in-depth interview techniques and field observations and enriched with document studies. Informants interviewed were determined through the snowballing techniques. The result of the research shows that the existence of Manbail Futuh pesantren in the middle of village society not only serves to serve religious education (Islam) but with the number of santri coming from various regions, so the existence of pesantren also gives a socio-economic impact for the surrounding community. Against the community the economic benefits provided by pesantren is not active but passive. This is because the pesantren is limited to providing opportunities for local residents in the pesantren location to accommodate 833 students of mukim and has an active student of 2,469 people without attracting any pennies for "retribution". Sociologically, the socio-economic relation between pesantren and the local people who work as a sword gives birth to the pattern of the economic behavior of mashlahat. It can be said that the economic action played by pesantren is a substantive economy based on Islamic moral values, namely the principles of ta'awun (mutual help) and the principle of maslahat (the common good).
