The Anjuman-i-Islam was established in 1921, following the visit of Khwaja Kamaluddin to Singapore and other states in the Peninsula. This study discusses the establishment of the Anjuman-i-Islam during the early twentieth century, as a response to the British growing influence in Malaya. The British administrators were cautious in their treatment of the Muslim matters, which were and still are regarded as very sensitive issues. At the same time, they were suspicious of any activity, which could potentially undermine their position in Malaya. After covering the history of the foundation of the Anjuman-i-Islam, the paper describes the major activities of this association especially in printing. Moreover, it analyses the major achievements as well as challenges facing this Islamic association. It also examines the membership and leadership structure of the Anjuman-i-Islam. Finally, it analyses the attitude of the Anjuman-I-Islam towards the issue of the Caliphate. This study adopts the method of content analysis by investigating the archival materials (such as diplomatic and official memoirs and diaries, British official records, contemporary newspapers, magazines and periodicals). These primary sources are obtained from the National Archives in Kuala Lumpur and its branches, the Library of University Malaya, the Za’ba Memorial Library, the National Archives of United Kingdom, and the British Library. Keywords: Anjuman-I Islam, Malay-Muslims, Indian-Muslims, British and Caliphate. Kata Kunci: Anjuman-i Islam, Melayu-Muslim, India-Muslim, British dan Khilafah.

India is important in the study of Islamic history and civilization research as it was one of the earliest territories that received Islamic preaching and was the site for various Islamic kingdoms until the year 1857. The achievements of Islamic civilization in India, particularly during the Mughal era, added sparkle to the glory of Islamic history. For this reason, the facts relating the Mughal Kingdom in India have been discussed in writings on Islamic history and civilization, including the book, Sejarah Umat Islam, by Hamka. The purpose of this article is to study Hamkas work on the history of the Mughal Kingdom in India and analyse the narration and discussion he submitted. This research adopts a qualitative approach using historial study and content analysis to gather and analyse data. Research results find that Hamka had the interest and knowledge in writing Islamic history by describing Muslim societies and Islamic states from their inception to their end, including the Mughal Kingdom in India. In his narrative of Mughal history, Hamka inserted the element of teaching or ibrah (lesson), particularly when discussing the time of Mughal decline. The narrative approach is consistent with the philosophy of Islamic history that stresses on the ibrah concept, which was meaningful to Hamkas own personality as a missionary. Hence, his work, SejarahUmatIslam, proved Hamkas ability to discuss Islamic history, and simultaneously resonated with readers interested in issues of Islamic history.

This essay is an exploration of historical knowledge: how it is authored and, more importantly, how we can access it. Through in-depth inspection and careful combination of primary source documents from 1690 to 1806, the text is a result of my attempts to reconstruct Brazilian slave autonomy as a kind of historical knowledge. Disassembling the language that framed colonial encounters, I argue that historical knowledge from primary texts must first be framed within the everyday ‘encounters’ of others in 18th century Brazil social life. Utilising a socially situated textual analysis, the essay accesses the often overwritten autonomy of slaves through historical documents: (1) the text of a friar writing on slaves’ fantastic religious accomplishments, (2) two colonial mandates prohibiting slaves’ promiscuous and suggestive fashions, (3) a history of slave rebellion against colonial powers and (4) a list of demands composed by slaves offered as a peace treaty to their owner. Through exploring the ‘normative horizons’ of the authorial point-of-view of each text, what follows is not merely an ethnohistorical experiment in accessing historical knowledge, but an ethnographic exposition in imagining the lives and futures of slaves in the past.
