Takra is one of the important Paniya (drinks) in Indian culture. It is common drink used abundantly especially during the summer season. The main reason for its ample usage as a drink during summer might be the sudden relief it provides to the thirst and fatigue due to extreme heat. Literature review on the Ayurvedic concept of Takra shows it possesses Ushna Veerya and Amla Vipaka, which in turn increases the Pitta inside the body and will leads to thirst rather than decreasing thirst especially in Greehma Ritu. Thus, there exist a paradox in the literature and practice. Thus a study was conducted to find out the Trishnahara property of Takrabheda in Greeshma Ritu. In the experiment total intake of water by each group after administering specific variety of buttermilk were calculated. The study was conducted during Greeshmaritu in wistar albino rats. Numbers of groups were six which included Ghola, Matita, Takra, Udasvit Caccika and Control. statistical analysis was done by ANOVA followed by Dunnet multiple comparison as post hoc test, if p<0.05 using graph pad instant software and by ANOVA followed by Tukey Kramer as post hoc test, if p<0.05 using graph pad instant software. It is concluded that Takrabheda is not having Trishnahara property when compared with the control group in Greeshma Ritu because of its Ushna, Ruksha Guna of Takrabheda. But in Vasanta Ritu, Acarya advised the intake of Dipana, Laghu and Ruksha Ahara. So, Takra can be an effective Paniya during Vasanta Rithu.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of analogy and explicit instructions on 50-m sprint performance and their running kinematics. Forty-five male Physical Education undergraduates participated in this study and were randomly divided into three groups, (i.e. analogy, explicit and control). Their sprint performances were assessed using wireless timing gate while the kinematic data was assessed by Kinovea software. The analogy group received three analogies which were “run tall”, “chin to pocket” and “claw the track” throughout the intervention sessions whereas the explicit group received “keep the body posture in an upright position and aligned, head and butt not tilting outward”, “arms should maintain a 90-degree angle at the elbow throughout the upswing as well as backswing” and “the foot landing should always be on the balls of the feet”. The control group did not receive any instruction throughout the intervention period. All participants were tested again after three weeks for the post test and retention test a week after. A 3 group x 3 tests mixed design ANOVA was used to analyze the sprinting performance whereas the kinematic data was analyzed by using one way MANOVA test. Results displayed that there was no significant difference in sprint performance among the groups. However, the post hoc test showed that the analogy group improved significantly in the post test. The kinematic data showed that both intervention groups were significantly better than the control group. This study concluded that both analogy and explicit instructions resulted in better running mechanics but only the analogy group elicited better in performance. Thus, analogy instructions are suggested to be an effective method to coach sprinters.

Background and Objectives: Nephrotoxicity is one of the limiting factors for using doxorubicin as an anticancer chemotherapeutic. Reactive oxygen species and cytokines have been implicated in the nephrotoxicity induced by doxorubicin. The main objective of the present study is to identify and compare the histomorphological features in kidneys of albino rats and gross morphological features such as weight of rats and weight of the kidneys due to administration of doxorubicin. Materials and Methods: In the study, albino rats were taken as the animal model. Sixty animals were taken as the sample size. They were divided into two equal groups: experimental (n=30) and control (n=30). Rats of experimental group were treated with anticancer drug doxorubicin at a single intraperitoneal dose of 10 mg/kg body weight while the Control group of rats received a similar volume of 0.9% normal saline. The ethical clearance was taken prior to the research from IERB committee BPKIHS Dharan.  Results: Our results showed that there was high effect of drug in experimental groups of rats. It was seen that there was significant decrease in the body weight and weight of kidneys. The final body weight and kidney weight between experimental and control group showed the significant difference. Similarly there were no significant differences in the normal architecture between the male and female rats. The normal renal histological features were seen on the kidneys in the control group whereas the rats intervened with the drug had some disrupted histological features which reveal the toxicity of the drugs in the kidneys. Conclusion: The study showed toxicity of the drug in the kidneys of experimental groups of rats irrespective of gender and suggest that doxorubicin causes significant loss of the body weight and weight of kidneys and causes the disruption in the normal histological features.

The objective of the present study was to perform histological and stereological examination of alcohol-induced changes in the optic nerve, considered an extension of white matter of the brain, in rats. This study included 20 male Wistar albino rats aged 60 days and weighing 190–220 g. The rats were divided into three groups: ethanol ( n = 7), maltodextrin ( n = 7), and control ( n = 6) groups. The ethanol group was administered ethanol at a dose of 6.4% (v/v) instead of water for 18 days; the maltodextrin group received maltodextrin for the same time period, and the control group was the sham group. At the end of the experiment, a 0.5-mm long section of the optic nerve starting from the optic chiasma was dissected and examined with routine microscopic histological examination methods. The modified Cavalieri method was used for stereological measurement. Total tissue area ratios were calculated with a point grid provided by the Shtereom 1.5 software package. The statistical comparison of the groups revealed that the ethanol group had a significant reduction in the number of axons and sheath area of the optic nerve compared to the control and maltodextrin groups ( p < 0.017, p < 0.022, respectively). These results indicate the toxic effects of ethanol on the optic nerve.

AbstractHyperhomocysteinemia (HHC), both basal and after methionine load, may occur due to genetic disorders or deficiencies of nutrients that affect the remethylation or trans-sulphuration pathways during methionine metabolism. HHC is involved in the pathogenesis of many illnesses as a result of its prooxidative effect and its impairment of antioxidative protection. The aim was to examine the effects of subchronic methionine overload on the body weight and standard biochemical parameters in rat serum and to examine whether simultaneous subchronic intraperotoneal administration of methionine alone or together with L-cysteine or N-acetyl-cysteine resulted in a change in the body weight and biochemical parameters in the rat serum. The research was conducted during a three-week period (male Wistar albino rats, n=36, body weight of approximately 160 g, age of 15-20 days), and the animals were divided into a control group and three experimental groups of 8-10 animals each: a) control group (0.9% sodium chloride 0.1-0.2 ml/day); b) methionine (0.8 mmol/kg/bw/day) (MET group); c) methionine (0.8 mmol/kg/bw/day) + L-cysteine (7 mg/kg/bw/day) (L-cys+MET group); and d) methionine (0.8 mmol/kg/bw/day) + N-acetyl-L-cysteine (50 mg/kg/bw/day) (NAC+MET group). In addition to the body weight monitoring, the levels of total homocysteine and the standard biochemical parameters in blood samples (plasma or serum) were determined. The results indicated that monitoring the homocysteine levels and standard biochemical parameters in blood could be used for analysis and could provide an excellent guideline for distinguishing between toxic and non-toxic doses of methionine intake, which may be meaningful for clinical applications.

Background: With regard to tobacco and alcohol addiction, involvement of NMDA receptors and glutamate as neurotransmitter has been highlighted. Few indirect evidences support possible de-addiction potential of zinc being mediated through their interaction with nicotinic and NMDA receptors. The objectives of the present study were planned to analyze the alcohol de-addiction potential of oral zinc sulfate as a monotherapy and as a supplement to topiramate, in male wistar albino rats. Methods: Male wistar albino rats were exposed to ‘two-bottle free choice’ model of voluntary ethanol consumption, wherein each animal had access to water and 10% v/v ethyl alcohol in two separate bottles. Thirty male rats divided into five groups, each containing six rats were treated as control group, receiving 1ml/kg/d distilled water orally; zinc sulfate group receiving 18mg/kg/d of elemental zinc orally; topiramate group receiving topiramate 5mg/kg/d, orally and Topiaramate plus Zinc sulfate group receiving both zinc sulfate (18mg/kg/d) and topiramate (5mg/kg/d) orally for two weeks. Results: There were no significant differences with regard to all the three parameters in two-way ANOVA. However, there were significant differences with regard to amount of alcohol and water consumed but not API, in all the treatment groups in post-hoc test. Conclusions: It is unclear on to the alcohol de-addiction potential of zinc as monotherapy and combination therapy with topiramate.

Abstract Purpose: There are multiple and specific phases during wound healing. Resveratrol (RSV) is a polyphenol compound found naturally in fruits. Resveratrol's antioxidant, anti-aging, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic effects have been shown. This study aims to determine the effects of RSV on perfusion, neovascularization, inflammation, and granulation stages of wound healing in addition to its antioxidant capacity over GPX and SOD.Methods: 16 female rats were divided into two groups as the RSV and control groups. Six excisions were made in each rat. Three excisions in each rat were sutured and the other 3 were left as open wounds. Topical RSV was applied to the wounds of the rats in the RSV group. No treatment was given to the control group. Blood perfusion of the wounds in both groups were measured using the PeriScan PIM 3 System Laser Doppler Blood Perfusion Imager. Punch biopsies were taken for histopathological examinations and for the evaluation of SOD, GPX, and MDA.Results: GPX level of the closed wounds belonging to the RSV group was higher compared to the control group. There was no statistically significant difference in SOD and MDA levels between the groups. Neovascularization was registered higher in the open wounds of RSV group. Conclusion: Within parameters, resveratrol has been shown to be effective in wound healing in various ways. The results of this study may shed light on new therapeutic approaches that can be used in the reversal of oxidative stress in wound-causing diseases.

Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ and has central role in interaction with other organs or tissues while propolis can induce lipolysis. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide detailed information about adipose tissue homeostasis modifications and body composition during propolis supplement consumption. Twenty male Wistar albino rats (8 weeks) were divided into two groups of 10 animals each and fed for 90 days with two different types of diets: standard for the control group (diet C) and standard diet + 2% propolis (diet P). Thyroid hormones did not show differences, while ghrelin and adiponectin decreased in the group that was fed propolis. Insulin, leptin, and non-esterified fatty acids also increased along with reduced body weight and fat, in addition to increased lean mass when propolis was in the diet. We conclude that propolis could decrease ghrelin and adiponectin but increase non-esterified fatty acids and insulin secretion, which improves body composition.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the application of homocysteine as well as its effect under the condition of aerobic physical activity on the activities of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) in cardiac tissue and on hepato-renal biochemical parameters in sera of rats. Male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (n = 10, per group): C: 0.9% NaCl 0.2 mL/day subcutaneous injection (s.c.); H: homocysteine 0.45 µmol/g b.w./day s.c.; CPA saline (0.9% NaCl 0.2 mL/day s.c.) and a program of physical activity on a treadmill; and HPA homocysteine (0.45 µmol/g b.w./day s.c.) and a program of physical activity on a treadmill. Subcutaneous injection of substances was applied 2 times a day at intervals of 8 h during the first two weeks of experimental protocol. Hcy level in serum was significantly higher in the HPA group compared to the CPA group (p < 0.05). Levels of glucose, proteins, albumin, and hepatorenal biomarkers were higher in active groups compared with the sedentary group. It was demonstrated that the increased activities of LDH (mainly caused by higher activity of isoform LDH2) and mMDH were found under the condition of homocysteine-treated rats plus aerobic physical activity. Independent application of homocysteine did not lead to these changes. Physical activity leads to activation of MMP-2 isoform and to increased activity of MMP-9 isoform in both homocysteine-treated and control rats.

We compared the prevalence of ultrasound signs of adenomyosis in women with endometriosis who underwent surgery to those who were managed conservatively. This was a retrospective study of women evaluated at a tertiary endometriosis referral center who underwent 2D/3D transvaginal ultrasound. Adenomyosis diagnosis was based on the presence of at least three sonographic signs. The study group subsequently underwent laparoscopic surgery while the control group continued conservative management. Statistical analysis compared the two groups for demographics, symptoms, clinical data, and sonographic findings. The study and control groups included 244 and 158 women, respectively. The presence of any, 3+, or 5+ sonographic signs of adenomyosis was significantly more prevalent in the study group (OR = 1.93–2.7, p < 0.004, 95% CI; 1.24–4.09). After controlling for age, for all findings but linear striations, the OR for having a specific feature was higher in the study group. Women in the study group with ≥ 5 sonographic signs of adenomyosis had more than twice the risk of experiencing infertility (OR = 2.31, p = 0.012, 95% CI; 1.20–4.45). Sonographic signs of adenomyosis are more prevalent in women with symptomatic endometriosis who underwent surgery compared with those who continued conservative management. Women with 5+ findings have a significantly increased risk of infertility. Adenomyosis on ultrasound should be considered in the management decisions regarding these patients.
