Abstract: Single-atom (SA) catalysts, as a rising star in catalytic field, have many advantages over traditional nanocatalysts. The enhanced catalytic activity, variable and simple structure as well as clear active sites of SA catalysts advance the innovation of biosensing techniques. In this review, we will provide the latest research progress of SA catalysts in biosensing field, and systematically summarize their sensing applications, especially emphasing on the biosensing strategies on the determination of disease-related biological matrices (H2O2, biological enzyme, NO, etc) and environmental pollutants (organophosphorus pesticides, heavy metal ions and volatile organic compounds). Finally, we will provide the challenges that SA catalysts still faced.

BackgroundPatients with bronchiectasis have a less active lifestyle than healthy peers, but the association with hospital admission has not been explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between 1) any physical activity variable; and 2) sedentary time, with hospitalisation due to exacerbation in adults with bronchiectasis.MethodsIn this prospective observational study, baseline lung function, quality of life, exercise tolerance, severity of bronchiectasis and physical activity were recorded. Physical activity was objectively assessed over a week using a SenseWear armband and the results were expressed in steps·day–1 and sedentary time. Number of hospitalisations due to a bronchiectasis exacerbation and time to first event were recorded after 1-year follow-up.ResultsSixty-four patients with bronchiectasis were analysed, of whom 15 (23%) were hospitalised during the follow-up. Hospitalised patients showed poor baseline clinical and severity outcomes, fewer steps walked per day and more sedentary behaviour than the non-hospitalised group. Patients who walked ≤6290 steps·day–1 or spent ≥7.8 h·day–1 in sedentary behaviour had an increased risk of hospital admission due to bronchiectasis exacerbation at 1-year follow-up. Specifically, ≥7.8 h·day–1 of sedentary behaviour was associated with a 5.9-fold higher risk of hospital admission in the following year.ConclusionsLow levels of physical activity and high sedentary time at baseline were associated with a higher risk of hospitalisation due to bronchiectasis exacerbation. If these findings are validated in future studies, it might be appropriate to include physical activity and sedentary behaviour as an item in severity scores.

This paper deals with the mathematical analysis of a thermostatted kinetic theory equation. Specifically, the assumption on the domain of the activity variable is relaxed allowing for the discrete activity to attain real values. The existence and uniqueness of the solution of the related Cauchy problem and of the related non-equilibrium stationary state are established, generalizing the existing results.

Abstract Advancements in body-worn activity devices make them valuable for objective physical activity measurement. Research-grade monitors utilize software algorithms developed with younger populations using waist-worn devices. ActiGraph offers the low frequency extension (LFE) filter which reduces the movement threshold to capture low acceleration activity that is more common in older adults. It is unclear how this filter changes activity variable calculations in older adults. We investigated the effects of the LFE filter on wrist-worn activity estimates in this population. Participants were 21 older adults who wore the GT9X on their non-dominant wrist for 7 days in a free-living environment. Activity counts were estimated both with and without the LFE filter. Paired samples t-tests revealed that the LFE estimated significantly higher number of counts than non-LFE calculated counts per minute on all three axes (p < .001). Step count estimates were higher with (M = 20,780.09, SD = 5300.85) vs. without (M = 10,896.54, SD = 3489.45) the LFE filter, (t (20) = -22.21, p < .001). These differences have implications for calculations based on axis counts (e.g., Axis-1 calculated steps, intensity level classifications) that rely on waist-worn standards. For example, even without the filter, the GT9X calculated an average of 10,897 steps, which is likely an overestimate in this population. This suggests that axes-based variables should be interpreted with caution when generated with wrist-worn data, and future studies should aim to develop separate wrist and waist-worn standard estimates of these variables in older adult populations.

The paper deals with the problem of continuous dependence on initial data of solutions to the equation describing the evolution of a complex system in the presence of an external force acting on the system and of a thermostat, simply identified with the condition that the second order moment of the activity variable (see Section 1) is a constant. We are able to prove that these solutions are stable with respect to the initial conditions in the Hadamard’s sense. In this connection, two remarks spontaneously arise and must be carefully considered: first, one could complain the lack of information about the “distance” between solutions at any time t ∈ [ 0 , + ∞ ) ; next, one cannot expect any more complete information without taking into account the possible distribution of the transition probabiliy densities and the interaction rates (see Section 1 again). This work must be viewed as a first step of a research which will require many more steps to give a sufficiently complete picture of the relations between solutions (see Section 5).
