Pregnant female albino rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups which were administered either 15 mg/kg diphenylhydantoin, 5 mg/kg phenobarbital or an equal volume of distilled water. All administrations occurred daily in one of four time frames, Days 1–7, Days 8–14, Days 15-birth, Days 1-birth. At 75 days of age one male and one female offspring from 48 different litters were tested on avoidance conditioning. Few birth defects were noted in the offspring, and abnormalities were not noted with regard to physical development. The results of avoidance-conditioning testing indicate that the administration of diphenylhydantoin during the third period of pregnancy and the administration of phenobarbital during the first period are most influential in affecting learning in a detrimental direction. Caution seems advisable in the usage of these drugs in pregnancy.

Thoroughbreds are bred solely with a view to racing, and their performances are well documented. Racehorses are good subjects, therefore, for studying the effects of perinatal disorders on physical development and achievement. Thoroughbreds become fully grown at about 3 years . . . but in flat racing they are raced first at 2 years and the majority have completed their racing careers by the end of their third year, although a few continue after this age. At 2 years some are still not fully developed and their potential ability is often not evident until the third year. It has long been recognized by breeders and trainers that twin foals rarely develop into successful racehorses but there is little information on the outlook for single foals of low birth weight.

The article provides an overview of ten diploma theses written under the supervision of Professor of Zoology Juhan Aul at the University of Tartu from 1958–1970. The theses deal with physical development of Estonian school students in two Estonian towns (Tartu and Pärnu) and nine districts (Tartu, Elva, Põlva, Räpina, Rapla, Keila, Pärnu, Võru, Harju) according to the then existing administrative division. The theses are based on the anthropological material collected from 1956–1966.The first part of the article briefly describes the period of nearly 202 years during which the scholars related to the University of Tartu have conducted various physical anthropological studies on Estonians. These years can conditionally be divided as follows: the first period, 1814–1927 – the period from Baer to Aul, the second period, 1927–1993 – the Aul period, the third period, from 1993 to the present – the period of the Centre for Physical Anthropology. The article describes some of the options the students had for participating in anthropological research. An overview is given of the beginning of anthropological research of children and school students in Estonia and in the world. The article acquaints the reader with the whole of the so-called Aul period and the diploma theses on Estonian school students’ physical development supervised by him.The second part gives an overview of the diploma theses.

Aim. The purpose of the article is to study the physical development and physical fitness of students of the III functional group under lack of physical activity and in the conditions of organized classes in a technical university. Materials and methods. The sample included 11 490 full time students (6051 males and 5439 females) aged 17–21 years. The study of physical development and physical fitness was conducted in two stages. In all participants, anthropometric and physiometric health data were recorded. These data were studied in dynamics from the 1st to the 4th year. The obtained data were examined stage-by-stage during the academic year and vacation period. Results. Significant differences were obtained in the physical development of girls in terms of weight and height by the end of the third year. The values of the Stange and Gench tests improved by the end of the first year. However, by the end of the second year, the negative dynamics was detected. The results of the Genchtest significantly improved by the end of the fourth year. The study of physical fitness revealed significant positive dynamic in the development of speed and a significant decrease in strength preparedness by the end of the fourth year. By the end of the first year, strength endurance became significantly higher compared with the data obtained at the time of the beginning of training. By the end of the third year endurance decreased significantly. Conclusion. Young people who regularly engage in physical activity during the first two years at the university have a positive trend in most indicators of physical development and physical fitness. Lack of motor activity, caused by a decrease in the number of classes provided for by the general education program, significantly affects endurance, speed, the development of strength (static endurance of the muscles of the shoulder girdle and dynamic strength of the muscles of the lower extremities), speed and strength qualities (6th and 8th semesters), flexibility.

Allocation of Village Funds including Village Funds in its implementation is carried out by several regional government institutions, namely the first local government itself as the regulator or policy maker of use and utilization, secondly the sub-district government and related technical agencies that play a supervisory, mentoring and facilitator role and the third and final is the village government itself as the recipient, user and user of the fund. the implementation of village fund allocation policies in development in the village of Tatelu Rondor, Dimembe Subdistrict, North Minahasa Regency through physical development in the village did not work well, this condition was based on facts namely lack of proper and correct understanding of village government, unavailability of resources adequate in supporting the smooth implementation of village fund allocation policies, lack of communication in supporting implementation activities, lack of support from some village officials and the community, and bureaucratic structures often hampered.

Background. Theoretical analysis of research papers allowed us to establish that physical preparation of pu-pils in elementary grades as an area of scientific and pedagogical knowledge was not investigated enough. Despite great efforts to cover a lot of questions and undoubted theoretical and practical significance of educational research, it should be noted that the problem of physical education for younger pupils using sports games in the lessons of physical education remains open to theoretical understanding and experimental study. There is a lack of specific studies that reveal the basic trends and ways to optimize the studied phenomenon. Worsening situation in the area of physical training in junior classes and individual indicators of health status in the country encourages looking for scientific solutions of the problem. Research aim was to define the most effective methods of physical education for 8–9-year-old girls, learners of the second and third grades, during physical education lessons including elements of sports games in a comprehensive school.Methods. Research participants were 64 girls from the second and the third grades. They were divided into 4 groups – 3 experimental groups and one control group. During the experiment, group E1 was allotted 75% of the time of the lesson for training technical actions of sports, group E2 – 50% in E3 – 25%, for the development of physi-cal skills – 25, 50 and 75% respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed program was estimated by the changes in the indicators of physical development and general physical fitness. Results and conclusions. Physical development of girls during the school year changed considerably. The most clearly expressed change was noted in the results of the changes in the girls’ body weight, from 20.32 to 23.24% in all groups. No significant differences between the experimental and control groups in terms of physical development were identified. Indicators of general physical fitness for the whole period of the experiment significantly increased in all the groups studied (p < .05–.001). They may be divided into two groups:•  The first group included indicators which were significantly higher in the experimental group E3, where more time was devoted to physical training (running at 30 m, the hand strength) during the physical educa-tion lessons; •  The second group included indicators which were significantly higher in the experimental group E1, where more time was devoted to sports (long jump, making a shot, running 3 x 10 m) during physical education lessons. Thus,  the  lessons  of  physical  education  with  elements  of  sports  promoted  more  intensive  development  of the overall fitness of girls aged 8–9 years compared to those who attended physical education lessons conducted according to the general curriculum. Keywords: girls in the second and the third grades, physical education class, physical development, physical ftness, sports and games.

These two fathers’ quotes encapsulate three central themes for African American fathers. The first reflects an experience common to many fathers, regardless of race—that a father’s participation in child-rearing is not as important as a mother’s. Fathers are often made to feel uncomfortable when they do express an interest. A second theme relates to the dangers in the community of associating with the “wrong crowd” and the pressure on these young women to become sexually active and have babies at a very young age. The second father speaks to the third theme, the challenges he sees his daughter facing as she grows up and tries to compete in an unjust world. This is a refrain that we heard throughout the interviews with the fathers. This chapter presents the stories of the fathers. They are an important part of the tapestry that has produced their academically successful daughters. They have often been a counterweight to the mothers by offering education about the male world and by providing a male perspective. It is they who assume a protective stance (often along with mothers) as they warn about relations with men. And it is they, along with the mothers, who set the achievement bar high. How did they learn the values they impart, and how do they help their daughters prepare for the future? We asked them what messages they received about education and about being Black when they grew up, and how these messages influenced their parenting style. We asked specifically about their daughters’ abilities and interests in math and science. We were interested in who the fathers believed had been helpful to their daughters along the way. We particularly focused on adolescence and the thorny issues that arise regarding emotional and physical development, dating, and growing up Black. Finally, we asked for their wisdom—what do they recommend to other parents who want to engender academic excellence in their children? Many have a certain picture of the African American father, particularly those fathers who are poor.

In the course of studying the problem of harmonizing the physical and mental development of a preschool, it was revealed that some researchers correlate motor and intellectual, the second physical and mental, the third physical and mental development. At the same time, no specific indicators of the harmony of the combination of quantitative parameters were identified. Thus, there is a problem of assessing the level of harmony between the physical and mental development of preschoolers in the process of physical education. On the basis of the existing problem, we made an attempt to develop a methodology for assessing the harmonious relationship between the physical and mental development of preschoolers 5-6 years old. The process of developing the methodology covered several successive stages. At the first stage, all indicators of the physical and mental development of preschoolers were transferred to 5 points level systems. The method of conducting all-Russian monitoring of physical development and physical fitness of studying educational institutions was taken as the basis for translating indicators of physical development into scores. An important task at the head of the preschool education system is the comprehensive and harmonious development of the child's personality. However, the programmatic and normative documents available in preschool institutions are aimed at developing personal qualities through educational fields, due to which the mental load is significantly superior to the physical one, and educational classes are held mainly in a static position.
