Project SCHOLAR (Statistical Consulting Help for Organizational Leaders and Academic Researchers) is an undergraduate student statistical consulting service at the University of Central Oklahoma. SCHOLAR students work under the supervision of faculty mentors from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on various projects submitted from researchers on campus as well as off campus. This year, a SCHOLAR group was asked by the Oklahoma City Metro Literacy Coalition to update estimates of literacy levels in the Oklahoma City (OKC) Metropolitan Area and find factors related to below basic literacy proficiency. The group started by organizing and cleaning the data. Explanatory variables were collected from the 2010 US Census, and were used to develop a model for predicting the 2003 State Assessment of Adult Literacy estimates. The group performed a univariate analysis for each explanatory variable, using the p-value, residual plots, and QQ-plots to determine which variables were significantly related to literacy. The group performed multiple regression with stepwise selection, using all of the explanatory variables resulting from the univariate analysis after eliminating variables due to collinearity. The group intends to use the model along with the 2015 American Community Survey data to compute updated literacy estimates for every zip code in the OKC metro. The software used to perform this research is SAS and R.

Background: Ventral incisional hernia (VIH) is one of the most common post-operative complications following abdominal surgery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate and risk factors associated with development of a ventral incisional hernia (VIH).Methods: Patients who underwent major abdominal surgery between 2010 and 2012 at a single institution were included in this retrospective cohort study. Data were collected from medical records. The primary outcome was clinical or radiological evidence of incisional hernia; explanatory variables were patient demographics and potential clinico-pathological risk factors for hernia development. Results: A total of 295 patients who underwent laparotomy were analysed. 45 (15.25%) patients were found to have a ventral incisional hernia on follow-up. The median time to development of hernia was 351 days. There were equal numbers of elective (N=22) and emergency (N=23) operations that developed an incisional hernia. Of the explanatory variables considered diabetes, hypertension (HTN) and body mass index (BMI) had persistent significant positive associations with the development of an incisional hernia. On univariable analysis diabetes (HR = 2.73, p-value = 0.004) and hypertension (HR =2.17, p-value = 0.016) were identified as independent risk factors for hernia development. BMI was also significantly associated with development of an incisional hernia on univariate analysis, but due to missing data this did not reach statistical significance on multivariable analysis. Conclusions: Although there are several risk factors to development of VIH, diabetes and HTN were associated with development of incisional hernia in our study. BMI also appears to be an important determinant of development of VIH. Further research in this area is likely to identify an at-risk subset of patients, who may benefit from weight loss prior to surgery or prophylactic mesh post-laparotomy.

Background:The goal of treatment in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is to achieve remission. There is the patient with residual symptoms in the Japanese RA patient who achieved clinical remission. There are not many studies to examine the relation between everyday life, social activity and evaluation of disease activities using high-sensitivity image examinations (musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) and MRI).Objectives:To examine the relationship between subjective residual symptoms and imaging examinations in RA patients who have achieved clinical remission.Methods:30 RA patients who achieved SDAI remission during RA treatment. Age, sex, disease duration, physical findings, serological markers, disease activity, HAQ, EQ-5D-5L, FACIT-F, Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs), EGA and medications were evaluated. 44 joints were assessed by MSKUS with gray scale (GS) and power doppler (PD) and contrast-enhanced bilateral joint MRI scoring with OMERACT-RAMRIS scoring.Results:1. The mean SDAI of the 30 RA patients was 1.3. 2.In the analysis of the presence or absence of subjective residual symptoms that led to remission of SDAI (Table 1).Table 1.Subjective residual symptoms/presence (N=17)Subjective residual symptoms/absence (N=13)Univariate analysisp valueMultivariate logistic analysisp valueTJC0.0±0.00.3±0.50.0173HAQ0.4±0.40.05±0.10.00950.00181EQ5D-5L0.8±0.10.9±0.00.0001FACIT-F14.5±9.84.6±4.30.0233Morning stiffness (min)256.5±564.80.0±0.00.0210Pain (VAS) (mm)9.2±9.50.9±1.50.00440.0455PGA (mm)7.7±9.00.5±1.10.0013(1). In the univariate analysis, the number of tender joints, HAQ, EQ-5D-5L, FACIT-F, morning stiffness, and pain VAS were extracted with significant differences.(2). In multivariate logistic analysis, HAQ and pain VAS were extracted as independent factors with significant differences. 3.In univariate analysis of the association between HAQ and pain VAS extracted in multivariate logistic analysis and imaging examinations (MSKUS/MRI), MRI-synovitis was extracted with a significant difference in HAQ.Conclusion:1. It was suggested that Pain VAS and HAQ due to RA could be identified in patients reaching SDAI remission. 2. In patients reaching SDAI remission, Pain VAS ≤10 or HAQ ≤0.5 suggested that subjective residual symptoms may be eliminated. 3. HAQ ≤ 0.5 suggests that synovitis is less likely to be detected on MRI. 4. In patients who have reached SDAI remission, little residual inflammation was observed on US, suggesting that induction of remission is important not only to prevent joint destruction, but also to improve and maintain long-term QoL.Disclosure of Interests:MASAO NAWATA Grant/research support from: I have received research funding from Eli Lilly Japan K.K., Kazuki Someya: None declared, Takafumi Aritomi: None declared, Masashi funada: None declared, Katsumi Nakamura: None declared, SAITO KAZUYOSHI Grant/research support from: I have received research funding from Eli Lilly Japan K.K., Yoshiya Tanaka Speakers bureau: I have received speaking fees from Abbvie, Daiichi-Sankyo, Chugai, Takeda, Mitsubishi-Tanabe, Bristol-Myers, Astellas, Eisai, Janssen, Pfizer, Asahi-kasei, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, UCB, Teijin, MSD, and Santen, Consultant of: I have received consulting fees from Abbvie, Daiichi-Sankyo, Chugai, Takeda, Mitsubishi-Tanabe, Bristol-Myers, Astellas, Eisai, Janssen, Pfizer, Asahi-kasei, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, UCB, Teijin, MSD, and Santen, Grant/research support from: I have received research grants from Mitsubishi-Tanabe, Takeda, Chugai, Astellas, Eisai, Taisho-Toyama, Kyowa-Kirin, Abbvie, and Bristol-Myers

ABSTRACT Objective: to assess the functional levels of health literacy in individuals undergoing dialysis. Method: a cross-sectional study with 42 patients of the Nephrology Unit of a public hospital in Recife, Brazil, from May to August 2016. Data were collected through scripted interviews and chart analysis. Functional health literacy was measured using the Brazilian version of the Short-Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS®) software, version 18.0, with a univariate analysis to verify the association between independent variables and functional health literacy levels using Fisher's exact test. Results: 80.9% of the patients presented inadequate health literacy and 19.1% presented adequate health literacy. The number of correct answers remained between 0-18 in the reading comprehension and in the scheduling appointment card. Among the independent variables, only marital status (p-value=0.018) and personal income (p-value=0.009) were factors associated with the worst scores in the test, indicating that these variables influence the increase in inadequate literacy. Conclusion: the prevalence of inadequate functional literacy was high, reflecting difficulties in understanding and processing health information, which may interfere with therapeutic management and self-care.

Obesity is a significant contributing factor in the development of various chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, stroke, osteoarthritis and certain cancer accounting for 2.8 million worldwide deaths annually. Recent global figures indicate that the prevalence of obesity is not just a problem of the developed countries but is also on the increase in the developing world, with over 115 million people suffering from obesity-related problems (WHO). In Africa, 8% of adults above 20 years are obese and 27% overweight (Steyn & Mchiza, 2014), Lack of empirical data remains an obstacle in monitoring the magnitude of current and future trends of overweight and obesity in sub Saharan Africa including South Sudan. This study investigated the prevalence of obesity and associated risk factors among teaching staff; a case at University of Juba in South Sudan (Rep). A cross-sectional study design was used. A total of 196 study participants drawn from various Colleges and faculties of Juba University using multi-stage systematic random sampling of 1st selecting the College, department and 2nd stage was the selection of participants using the exiting staff list obtained from the University administration. Key variables collected includes weight/kg, height, age, sex, physical activities, feeding habits and income of the study participants, which was used to determine the prevalence of obesity and associated risk factors. STATA version 12 was used to data analyze. Chi-square statistics were used to compare equality of distribution of obesity. Out of the 196 participants, 18.4% were males (160/196) and 81.6% were females (36/196). The mean age of the participant was estimated at 37 ± 8.5 years. Prevalence of Obesity (BMI> or=30) and Overweight (BMI >25 to <=30) among teaching staff was 4.1% and 10.2%, respectively. Of those found overweight/or obese, 20% were females (4/20) and  80% were males (16/20). While the age specific prevalence indicates obesity is highest among 35-44yrs (50%), followed by 45-55 yrs+ (37.5%) and 12.5% among 25-34yrs age groups. Age was found to be associated with obesity (P-value=0.0337, p<0.05)).Meal frequency was noted to be twice a day. Walking is the main physical activities for both males and females (97.5%) and nearly half of the participants (44.9%) had incomes 7500 South Sudan Pounds (SSP) an equivalent of $1000. Income levels was associated with BMI levels (P-value=0.0222; p<0.05). However, low prevalence of obesity among teaching staff at the University of Juba is not yet of an immediate public health concern, however, earlier preventive and control measures is required as most of the staff leads sedentary lifestyle. This study recommends public awareness intervention on dietary intake and physical exercises among others in schools and institutions at all levels to curtail an otherwise gradual rise in obesity and overweight in the near future.
