Diabetes Mellitus patients are predicted to reach 592 million in 2035 (Indonesia to grow from 9.1 million in 2014 to 14.1 million in 2035). Traditional plants and spices are easily found within society, some of which are used to control blood sugar level, eg. cinnamon. Cinnamon was known for its effectiveness in controlling blood sugar level, both on healthy and people with Diabetes Mellitus. So that blood sugar level reduction effect using cinnamon is worth to consider as a medication for Diabetes Mellitus. The goal of this research is to learn if there will be a reduction in blood sugar level with cinnamon consumption in a short period. Design that is used in this research is quasi experimental study. Respondents are given a brew of 6 gr cinnamon powder and 100 ml of hot water. Blood sugar levels are measured before and after the given cinnamon brew. 52 respondents participated in this research. Statistical analysis used is the Wilcoxon test. Blood sugar level median before given cinnamon brew is 142,71±66,11 mg/dL, while 2 hours after given cinnamon brew, blood sugar level reduced to 113,97±54,95 mg/dL. There is a reduction in blood sugar level by 28,74 mg/dL (20,14%). Wilcoxon test result indicated that there is a significant correlation with p-value = 0,0001. It is concluded that consuming 6 gram of cinnamon powder could reduce blood sugar level after 2 hours of consumption. Keywords: blood sugar; cinnamon; diabetes melitusABSTRAKDiperkirakan penderita diabetes melitus akan meningkat mencapai 592 juta orang pada tahun 2035. Background:Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second most common dementing illness. Multiple risk factors are associated with VaD, but the individual contribution of each to disease onset and progression is unclear. We examined the relationship between diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM) and the clinical variables of VaD.Methods:Data from 593 patients evaluated between June, 2003 and June, 2008 for cognitive impairment were prospectively entered into a database. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 63 patients who fit the NINDSAIREN criteria for VaD. The patients were divided into those with DM (VaDDM, n = 29) and those without DM(VaD,n= 34). The groups were compared with regard to multiple variables. Results:Patients with DM had a significantly earlier onset of VaD (71.9 ± 6.54 vs. 77.2 ± 6.03,p< 0.001), a faster rate of decline per year on the mini mental state examination (MMSE; 3.60 ± 1.82 vs. 2.54 ± 1.60 points,p= 0.02), and a greater prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms at the time of diagnosis (62% vs. 21%,p= 0.02).Conclusions:A history of premorbid DM was associated with an earlier onset and faster cognitive deterioration in VaD. Moreover, DM was associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with VaD. A larger study is needed to verify these associations. It will be important to investigate whether better glycemic control will mitigate the potential effects of DM on VaD.

AbstractSince 2013, a high incidence of bilateral symmetrical alopecia has been observed in free-ranging Formosan macaques (Macaca cyclopis) in Mt. Longevity, Taiwan. We hypothesized that stress induces alopecia in this population. To verify our hypothesis, we evaluated the histopathological characteristics of skin biopsy and used a validated enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGM) analysis, which act as an indicator of stress experienced by the individual. Follicular densities were lower (2.1–3.0 mm2) in individuals with symmetrical alopecia than in those with normal hair conditions (4.7 mm2). Furthermore, anagen to catagen/telogen ratios were lower in individuals with alopecia (0–1.4) than in those with normal hair (4.0). The histopathological characteristics of alopecia were similar to those of telogen effluvium, which indicates that stress is one of the possible etiologies. On the basis of the analytical and biological validation of EIAs for FGM analysis, 11β-hydroxyetiocholanolone was considered suitable for monitoring adrenocortical activity in both sexes of Formosan macaques. The mean concentrations (standard error; sample size) of 11β-hydroxyetiocholanolone were 2.02 (0.17; n = 10) and 1.41 (0.10; n = 31) μg/g for individuals with and without alopecia, respectively. Furthermore, the results of logistic regression analysis show that 11β-hydroxyetiocholanolone (p = 0.012) concentration was positively associated with alopecia. Thus, stress was the most likely to trigger symmetrical alopecia in Formosan macaques in Mt. Longevity. Although stress can decrease the fitness of an individual, considering the population status of Formosan macaques in Taiwan is stable and alopecia was only observed in our study area, which is isolated from other populations, the impact on the total population of Formosan macaque in Taiwan is limited. Nonetheless, stress-induced immunosuppression and alopecia might affect the local abundance and increase zoonosis risk due to frequent human–macaque contact in Mt. Longevity. Future studies are suggested to focus on the causative factor of stress and the effects of stress and alopecia on the health and welfare in the Formosan macaques.
