Abstract In cell biology, pharmacology and toxicology dose-response and concentration-response curves are frequently fitted to data with statistical methods. Such fits are used to derive quantitative measures (e.g. EC$$_{20}$$ 20 values) describing the relationship between the concentration of a compound or the strength of an intervention applied to cells and its effect on viability or function of these cells. Often, a reference, called negative control (or solvent control), is used to normalize the data. The negative control data sometimes deviate from the values measured for low (ineffective) test compound concentrations. In such cases, normalization of the data with respect to control values leads to biased estimates of the parameters of the concentration-response curve. Low quality estimates of effective concentrations can be the consequence. In a literature study, we found that this problem occurs in a large percentage of toxicological publications. We propose different strategies to tackle the problem, including complete omission of the controls. Data from a controlled simulation study indicate the best-suited problem solution for different data structure scenarios. This was further exemplified by a real concentration-response study. We provide the following recommendations how to handle deviating controls: (1) The log-logistic 4pLL model is a good default option. (2) When there are at least two concentrations in the no-effect range, low variances of the replicate measurements, and deviating controls, control values should be omitted before fitting the model. (3) When data are missing in the no-effect range, the Brain-Cousens model sometimes leads to better results than the default model.

Purpose The purpose of the paper is to contribute to further advancing of IMP as a research field by setting up and starting a theoretical conversation between system theory and the IMP. Design/methodology/approach The approach is based on a narrative literature study and conceptual research. Findings The authors find that system theory and cybernetics can be regarded as important sources of inspiration for early IMP research. The authors identify three specific theoretical “puzzles” in system theory that may serve as useful topics for discussion between system theorists and IMP researchers. Originality/value Only a handful of papers have touched upon the relationship between system theory and IMP before. This paper combines a narrative, historical analysis of this relationship with developing specific suggestions for using system theory as a vehicle for further advancement of IMP research.

This paper examines religious and state relations of Islamic thought perspective. This study aims to describe how the relationship between religion and state in the view of Islam. The method used in obtaining data is descriptive method through literature study. The results of the study show that among Muslim figures or thinkers such as Nurcholish Madjid and Abdur Rahman Wahid agree that there is a constructive relationship between state and religion which by revivalists separates it. Some of the indicators are: (1) Islam gives the principles of the formation of a state with the concept of khalīfah ,dawlah, or hukūmah, (2) Islam emphasizes the democratic values of truth and justice, and (3) Islam upholds Human Rights by stating that the basic rights that human beings bring ever since they are born are the right of religious freedom. Therefore, Islam essentially emphasizes the importance of human rights to be upheld in a state, because human rights are rights that should not be disturbed and deprived from the person who has the right.

Kata kunci: Budaya, Politik, Kekerabatan, Lonto Leok, fenomenologi, makna kekerabatan                                                                   Abstract   Culture plays a very important role in politics because it reflects the everyday life of society in determining political attitudes and choices or shaping the characteristics of society in politics. One of them many examples about the relationship between culture and politics can be illustrated in the issue of kinship in the 2020 West Manggarai regional election discussed in this study. The kinship phenomenon in question is the tendency of the West Manggarai community in general to choose leaders who are in the same kinship and it is known as the lonto leok culture which still strongly influences people's life, including politics. This study uses an interpretive paradigm with phenomenological research methods. The research data collection was carried out with primary data, namely conducting in-depth interviews and documentation and secondary data in the form of literature study. Interviews were conducted with informants who conducted lonto leok ahead of the 2020 Mabar Pilkada and also in the previous pilkada. The results showed that the meaning of kinship in the lonto leok culture in the election process in West Manggarai was togetherness and dependence. Meanwhile, the role of lonto leok culture in the political process is at the time of making decisions and fostering kinship ties.   Keywords: Culture, Politics, Kinship, Lonto Leok, phenomenology, meaning of kinship

Mucociliary clearance (MCC) is one of the most important defence mechanisms of the human respiratory system. Its failure is implicated in many chronic and debilitating airway diseases. However, due to the complexity of lung organization, we currently lack full understanding on the relationship between these regional differences in anatomy and biology and MCC functioning. For example, it is unknown whether the regional variability of airway geometry, cell biology and ciliary mechanics play a functional role in MCC. It therefore remains unclear whether the regional preference seen in some airway diseases could originate from local MCC dysfunction. Though great insights have been gained into the genetic basis of cilia ultrastructural defects in airway ciliopathies, the scaling to regional MCC function and subsequent clinical phenotype remains unpredictable. Understanding the multiscale mechanics of MCC would help elucidate genotype–phenotype relationships and enable better diagnostic tools and treatment options. Here, we review the hierarchical and variable organization of ciliated airway epithelium in human lungs and discuss how this organization relates to MCC function. We then discuss the relevancy of these structure–function relationships to current topics in lung disease research. Finally, we examine how state-of-the-art computational approaches can help address existing open questions. This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue ‘Unity and diversity of cilia in locomotion and transport’.

The research titled is "relationship between tourism investors and lokal communities in Desa Pakraman Laplapan Petulu Village (Case Study Social Conflict)", purpose to understand the relationship undertaken by tourism investors with lokal communities that happened in the Ubud tourist destination. Data were collected through observation, interview and literature study. Infoman taken by purposive, which determine the informan with a certain considerations that are considered able to provide data to the maximum in accordance with the criteria of the research objectives. The collected data were analyzed descriptively qualitative. An important concept in the study include the concept of Typology Relations Styling in 3 Zone which consists of the outer zone, the middle zone and center zone. The results of this study indicate that, Desa Pakraman Laplapan as a region lies in the outer zone. Relationships that lived between tourism investors and lokal communities in Desa Pakraman Laplapan patterned conflictual. This pattern is shown by the regulation provided by the lokal community to tourism investors who are less rational. As for the view of the conflict is a way to snatch for limited resources. And one of them is the economic resource owned by the investor. Styling tourism investor relations with the lokal community in Desa Pakraman Laplapan has been sticking to the surface of the endless conflict. In this case, the farmer must make good relationship with tourism investors because it would help to farmers.   Keywords: Relationship, Investors, Lokal Communities, Conflict

The warm cells of the spider tarsal organ respond very sensitively to low-amplitude changes in temperature and discharge continuously as the rate of change in temperature reaches zero. To test whether the continuous tonic discharge remains without sensory input, we blocked the warm cell's receptive region by Epoxy glue. The activity continued in this situation, but its dependence on temperature changes was strongly reduced. We interpret this to mean that the warm cells exhibit specific intrinsic properties that underlie the generation of the tonic discharge. Experiments with electrical stimulation confirmed the observation that the warm cells persist in activity without an external drive. In warm cells with blocked receptive region, the response curves describing the relationship between the tonic discharge and the level of depolarization is the same for different temperatures. In warm cells with intact receptive region, the curves are shifted upward with rising temperature, as if the injected current is simply added to the receptor current. This indicates a modulating effect of the receptor current on the tonic discharge. Stimulation causes a change in the tonic discharge rate and thereby enables individual warm cells to signal the direction in addition to the magnitude of temperature changes.
