(Title: Methods and Techniques of Translating Literary Works) With the mass media globalization today, a literary works can be translated into many different languages. This situation makes the translation literature become one of the prose that is in great demand by literary learners. A good translation literature cannot be separated from the translation system that can convey the contents of a literary work in the target language as well as in the original language. To get a good translation process, an interpreter (specially the beginner) must know the right way to transfer the original language into the target language. Difficulty translating literary works can be solved by the knowledge of translation. This article will explain about that knowledge which includes types, techniques and methods of translation. The purpose of this presentation is to provide some information for the Japanese language learners, especially those who learns the Japanese literature. Using the literature study method, it can be seen that there are three types of translation which include intralingual translation, interlingual translation and intersemiotic translation. The three types of translation can be translated by choosing the right method and technique from eight translation methods and nine translation techniques. By choosing the right method and technique, a translation literature is not only translated into the language system, but can also be further translated along with the sign and cultural meaning implied by that literary work.

There are many ways that could be done to introduce unique culture of a country to the international world; one of them is through translation works. This can be seen through Japanese literary works, which are translated into other languages. Botchan is one of the best literary works from Natsume Soseki that was translated into several languages, including Indonesian language, with the title of the translation Botchan Si Anak Bengal by Jonjon Johana. This novel tells the story about the life of Botchan, a teacher, who faces several conflicts. In this novel, there are many cultural terms so that when they are translated, they would trigger some difficulties because some of the terms still do not have equivalences in target language. The material cultural terms include foods, clothes, houses and their parts, places, and means of transportation. They can be found in the words geisha, kimono, soba, and so on. This research analyzed the equivalence in the translation with the informant as the benchmark to know whether the message in the target text is equivalent with the source text. This method is based on dynamic equivalence concept by Nida and Taber (1974:12). Based on the informant, the methods and techniques used by translator in maintaining the equivalence of message were analyzed. The used theory was the translation methods for cultural terms by Newmark (1988) and translation techniques by Catford (1965) and Hoed (2006).The research showed that the cultural terms were not easy to translate since they were related to the context of culture in the source language. It can be seen from the existing translation data showing two characteristics of equivalent translation that can be achieved through several methods, the understanding of language and culture of source language and target language; the use of suitable translation procedure and technique (transference, cultural equivalence, descriptive translation, transposition, modulation, additional explanation, and standard translation); and the right choice of word based on the intention of the author of novel.

Abstract Javanese literary works are considered as high-quality literary works. This is closely related to the noble values contained in Javanese literary works. The teachings or noble values in this Javanese literary work are usually referred to as piwulang literary works, namely works that originate from religious values or teachings that come from God. One of the Javanese literary works with piwulang nuances is Sêrat Bayanolah. This work tells about the journey of a panatagama at the Yogyakarta Palace in discovering the true essence of life. To understand this concept is not easy because in reality there are many deviant schools of thought and religion which can derail people from the right path. This research was conducted in a descriptive qualitative manner. The data source used was Sêrat Bayanolah by Raden Panji Natarata, which was collected by the Museum of Reksa Pustaka Pura Mangkunegaran, Surakarta. Based on the research results, it was found that the essence of man as a creature is not the same as the essence of God (God) as the Creator. Besides, interpreting the concept of life and death must be adjusted to Islamic teachings because in reality there are still scholars and knowledgeable people who still misunderstand the concept of life and death. Keywords: Sêrat Bayanolah, Javanese script, deviations, faith

The cinema is one of the most popular literary works. However, the films produced by each country being different, translation is necessary to understand the language used in each country. In the cinema, the translations can be displayed in form of dubbing or subtitling. This article discusses the problem of translation in the subtitle of the French film of Gaumont Ballerina in Indonesian. However, this study is limited to translations of anterior sentences as the significative differences between French and Indonesian. Using qualitative methods and literature study techniques, this study explains how the translation problems can be solved considering the impact on the public. Through the analysis of translation techniques, equivalent and changes in translation, and subtitles rules we state that there is no fixed model in the translation of the past tense in Indonesian. But the subtitle of the film Ballerina in Indonesian is acceptable as it does not disrupt the scenario.

One of most arguable and observable social phenomena is gender inequality which is based on feminism thoughts. Considering how literature may portray human’s life along with its values, this study is purposed to elaborate and compare how feminism thoughts and gender inequality take place in various literary works. Based on the importance of feminism thoughts and gender inequality in cross cultural literature, then there is a necessity to conduct a comparative literature study which focused on feminism thoughts. This study took four kinds of literary works, namely drama, prose (short-story), movie, and poetry. Feminism approach as sociological approach was applied in this study altogether with comparative criticism and content analysis method. This study discussed how feminism thoughts got more supports and encouragement as the century progressed. By comparing literary works from 20th and 21st century, several important findings can be drawn, namely (a) feminism thoughts are getting stronger along with the progression of century, (b) feminism thoughts always oppose gender inequality as both are always found as binary oppositions in literary work, (c) both feminism and gender-inequality live through human’s values and repetitive actions, (d) personal and familial values are crucial in order to develop feminism thoughts and gender-inequality in an individual, and (e) the change of values, especially social and cultural values can bring changes in both feminism and gender inequality phenomena.

This study discusses the translation of imperative sentences contained in a literary work in the form of a novel. In general, the use of imperative sentences is characterized by the meaning of orders and prohibitions. However, there are differences between the imperative sentences of one language and another. Methods of data analysis are using translational equivalent method and glossing technique. The data were analyzed in two stages. First, categorizing the translation techniques used based on the theory of translation techniques according to Molina and Albir (20002), and second, determining the translation method using the theory of the translation method according to Newmark (1988). Based on the analysis, there were eight types of translation techniques found, namely 1) adaptation techniques; 2) amplification techniques; 3) established equivalent techniques; 4) generalization techniques; 5) linguistic compression techniques; 6) literal translation techniques; 7) modulation techniques; and 8) reduction techniques. Furthermore, translation method classified based on the orientation of the source language and target language is found. The translation method which is oriented to the source language consists of two translation methods, namely the semantic translation method and the literal translation method. Meanwhile, the translation method which is oriented towards the target language consists of three translation methods, namely the free translation method, the idiomatic translation method, and the communicative translation method. The results of this study indicate the translation method that is most widely used in this research is free translation method so that the translation of the imperative sentences applied in translating the novel Girls in the Dark by Andry Setiawan tends to be oriented towards the target language.

Baraumi Shougakkou is a children’s short story written by Miyazawa Kenji, a famous writer for producing literary works covering all the natural elements in the world; humans, animals, plants, rocks, wind, clouds, light, stars, and the sun. His works have been translated into many languages, including Indonesian. However, in translating a literary work, there are several issues, one of which is translating ecological terms. It needs the proper method so that the ecological terms can be translated accurately and provide a common perception between the readers of the original work and the readers of the translated works. This study aims to analyze the translation of ecological terms in environmentally oriented work Baraumi Shougakkou by Miyazawa Kenji. This study uses literature study methods from various sources as primary and secondary references related to translation criticism.
