Styrofoam is a thermoplastic with special characteristics; it is an efficient insulator, is extremely lightweight, absorbs trauma, is bacteria resistant, and is an ideal packaging material, compared to other thermoplastics. The aim of this study was to analyze the interaction between Styrofoam and S. platensis. The study examined the growth of S. platensis under Styrofoam stress, changes in Styrofoam functional groups, and their interactions. The research method was culture carried out in brackish water (12 mg/L salinity) for 30 days. S. platensis yields were tested by FTIR and SEM-EDX and Styrofoam samples by FTIR. The results showed the highest growth rate of S. platensis in cultures treated with 150 mg Styrofoam that is 0.0401 day−1. FTIR analysis shows that there has been a change in the functional group on Styrofoam. At a wavelength of 3400–3200 cm−1 corresponds to the alcohol group and there was an open cyclic chain shown by the appearance of a wavelength at 1680–1600 cm−1 assignment to alkene. SEM-EDX test results show that Styrofoam can be a resource of nutrition, especially carbon for S. platensis to photosynthesize. Increased carbon content of 24.56% occurred in culture, meanwhile, Styrofoam is able to damage S. platensis cells.

This study is concerned on evaluation of laminated composites of aluminium (Al) sheet and floral foam (FF) under flexural and compression test. Effect of different layers of Al/FF laminated composites was evaluated. Epoxy and hardener was used as the adhesive to bind the surface between the Al sheet and FF. The information on the functional group that exists in FF during the formation of the foam was verified by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. From flexural and compression test, the mechanical properties decreased with the increasing number of layers of Al/FF laminated composites. The load cannot be distributed uniformly across the composite layer thus results in failure. Optical Microscope (OM) was used to see the adhesion between the layers of Al/FF laminated composites. One layer (1L) of Al/FF shows good adhesion while for four layer (4L) of the composites show phase separation and the excess adhesive around the interface. This shows that the adhesion between the layers also contribute to the failure of the laminated composite. FTIR analysis shows that the FF consists of amine group (at 3587.95 cm-1), alcohol group (at 3305.35 cm-1) and alkyl group (>900 cm-1) which is the main functional group found in polyurethane foam.

South Kalimantan has a gold mining industry that produces waste that can pollute the environment and is harmful to public health. One of the hazardous contaminants contained in the gold mining industry is mercury. This study aims to make biosorbent of ketapang leaves which will be used to reduce mercury content in gold mining waste.. The study began with washing the ketapang leaves to remove the impurities and then dried 3-4 days under the sun to reduce the water content. The next step is a simple carbonization process by using furnaces at a temperature of 300 oC for 30 minutes as the optimum operating condition so that activated carbon is formed called BDK. In the final stage, the biosorbent of ketapang leaves with 0.1 N citric acid was activated to produce biosorbent of ketapang leaves called BDK-COOH. The test results were carried out by SEM and FTIR analysis. The results of SEM analysis showed biosorbents that form large and large pores caused by carbonization and activation processes. Likewise, the results of FTIR analysis formed an active functional group to absorb heavy metals in terms of shifting absorption bands shown by FTIR. However, the adsorption capacity of biosorbent has not been determined so that further research is needed to find out.

Testing repeat electronic scales with non-automatic scales technical requirements so far is fairly long if not using a calculator or computer. The aim of this research is to compare the repeatability testing method of electronic scales using methods according to the technical requirements of non-automatic scales and the Australian NMI method, both of which refer to OIML R76 in determining the validity or cancellation of electronic scales repeatability testing. This research method is done through repeat testing on 3 samples of electronic scales, then on each electronic scale 2 test methods are performed. The conclusion is that the electronic scales repeatability testing uses the non-automatic scales technical requirements method and the Australian NMI method has some differences although both refer to OIML R76. These differences include several points, namely the charge used, the method of adding additions, the formula for determining electronic scales, and different test results. The Australian NMI method is deemed to make it easier and more time efficient compared to the non-automatic weighing technical requirements method.
