The article presents the results of an empirical research dedicated to the co-occurrence of gestures and self-repairs in simultaneous interpreting. Self-repairs, viewed as a type of disfluencies, are divided into three categories: 1) a disfluency followed by a resolution (“positive” self-repair), 2) a disfluency consisting of repetition of the same lexical unit (“zero” self-repair); 3) an utterance truncated without a restart, which means that such a disfluency is not resolved. The study is based on the assumption that in simultaneous interpreting statistically significant correlation will be observed between various types of self-repair and various types of gestures, such as pragmatic, representational, deictic gestures and adapters. The data was obtained from 18 interpreters who were asked to interpret a popular science lecture from Russian into English. The material was analysed in ELAN and JAMOVI, and quantitative and statistical methods (T-test and ANOVA) were used to check on the hypotheses. The study revealed a strong correlation between self-repairs and gesture usage, which suggests that in moments of disfluency gestures facilitate speech. Concerning the relation between various types of self-repair and functional types of gestures, the hypothesis was not confirmed, although the statistics points to the fact that the simultaneous interpreters tend to use particular types of gestures with certain self-repairs.

Abstract Background A small sample size (n < 30 for each treatment group) is usually enrolled to investigate the differences in efficacy between treatments for knee osteoarthritis (OA). The objective of this study was to use simulation for comparing the power of four statistical methods for analysis of small sample size for detecting the differences in efficacy between two treatments for knee OA. Methods A total of 10,000 replicates of 5 sample sizes (n=10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 for each group) were generated based on the previous reported measures of treatment efficacy. Four statistical methods were used to compare the differences in efficacy between treatments, including the two-sample t-test (t-test), the Mann-Whitney U-test (M-W test), the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S test), and the permutation test (perm-test). Results The bias of simulated parameter means showed a decreased trend with sample size but the CV% of simulated parameter means varied with sample sizes for all parameters. For the largest sample size (n=30), the CV% could achieve a small level (<20%) for almost all parameters but the bias could not. Among the non-parametric tests for analysis of small sample size, the perm-test had the highest statistical power, and its false positive rate was not affected by sample size. However, the power of the perm-test could not achieve a high value (80%) even using the largest sample size (n=30). Conclusion The perm-test is suggested for analysis of small sample size to compare the differences in efficacy between two treatments for knee OA.

Governmental and nonprofit agencies have been increasingly reconsidering the roles of social media communicators for strategic communication to ensure they accurately perceive their roles. A questionnaire and interviews were conducted with various social media communicators in the UAE to identify the practitioners' perceptions of using social media in government communication and the influencing factors on their roles. A set of roles was created based on the literature and theory to explore the social media communicators' roles. The statistical methods include descriptive statistics, factor analysis, correlations, and T-test. This study demonstrates that four factors describe the various roles of SMCs in the UAE as follows: (1) government advocates, (2) information and image disseminators, (3) research and services providers, and (4) online community builders. To some extent, these roles overlap with previous roles identified.

Science documentaries on television aim to provide easy and entertaining access to research findings. To do so, producers need to know how to explain complex content for non-expert audiences in a comprehensible way. At the same time, they have to decide what aspects of a subject might be relevant for viewers, or how the subject matter could be rendered more interesting by employing strategies such as personalisation or emotionalisation. One specific decision concerns the use of terms. Both existing research and journalistic handbooks suggest that terms should be or are, in fact, avoided in popular science contexts. However, there is only little empirical research on the topic. This contribution seeks to test several pre-existing hypotheses on terms in documentaries for adults and show how often terms are used and whether/how they are explained when they appear. Examining terms in four English and four German science documentaries, the analysis points out which communicative resources are used to facilitate the comprehension of terms, and where an explanation seems to focus primarily on entertainment rather than ease of comprehension. The results challenge some of the previous views on terms in popular science communication and reveal that documentaries display highly idiosyncratic strategies when it comes to the use of terms.
