In the research field, smartphone began to be used for field data collection. One application that was used was KoBoCollect. This article shared the experience of using KoBoCollect in research on the socio-economic impact of blood diseases on banana in Sumba Island. The research was conducted by interviewing 64 banana farmers that spread proportionally in four regencies in Sumba Island. The use of KoBoCollect/toolbox made it easy to collect, save and manage research data. KoBoCollect/toolbox provided the advantages of conducting paperless research, able to record data in complex formats such as numeric data, descriptive data, photos, videos, sounds, coordinates and other data, dynamically making forms changes when conducting research, and displaying interactive applications. KoBoCollect can be run off-line, made it possible to collect field data in remote locations and no internet network. The research data was transmitted online so that the data tabulation process was automatic. Simple data analysis such as median values, mode, graphs and distribution maps of data collection were provided in KoBotoolbox. With KoBoCollect/toolbox, researchers quickly find out the results of the research, as in this research it was known that blood disease had an impact on the decrease in the banana population revealed by 81.54% of farmers.

A recent article in this journal discusses ways to manage uncertainty when the research field abruptly and significantly changes on researchers working inside their own society (Kacen & Chaitin, 2006). Our essay extends this discussion by asking: How do researchers manage ambiguous, conflictual, and rapidly changing events when they engage in study outside their own society? We describe three aspects of our data collection experience that coincidentally began one week before the Urumqi city, Xinjiang, China, riots of 2009 in which over 200 people were reported as killed and several thousand injured: (a). our original research agenda and the uncertain situation in Xinjiang in recent years; (b). how we modified our research project and approach to data collection; and (c). what we learned that can contribute to knowledge about conducting research under ambiguous, potentially unstable and rapidly changing socio-political conditions.

In traditional houses, the latar has an important role. The latar is not just an open space that can be physically used for shared activities. But the latar has a deeper meaning. A phenomenon is found in the traditional Kudus house that the buildings in the house face the latar, and not face the road. In connection with this phenomenon, a study was conducted aimed at uncovering the connection and interpreting the location of the latar with the orientation of the traditional Kudus house. This research is a descriptive interpretative qualitative research. Field data collection is done through direct observation in the Kudus traditional house to record and describe the arrangement of the building, setting the layout, and orientation of the building and is equipped with interview data. The results of the recording and description are then analyzed and interpreted to find the relationships and meanings contained in these relations. The results of this study showed two conditions: first, there was a relation between latar location and building orientation; secondly, the latar does not only serve as the center of the building orientation, and the binding between the buildings in the traditional Kudus house. But in meaning the latar is also two important activities carried out by the people of the Kota Lama Kudus, namely ji-gang, reciting and trading.

Abstract Assessing the socio-economic impact of a Research Infrastructure (RI) requires an evaluation framework and a data collection plan that should be put in place as early as possible. This essay maintains the idea that if data collection for impact assessment is not episodic, motivated by external requests from stakeholders and funding agencies, but rather becomes a routine activity, it could maximize its potential to inform the RIs management and serve the strategic planning function of the infrastructure.
